Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the easternmost stops on variations of the Silk Road, what Chinese city, formerly known as Canton, is seen here?

Answer: Guangzhou

Guangzhou, found near the coast a short distance from Hong Kong and Macau, is one of China's largest cities in terms of size and population. This sprawling metropolis, now part of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, is an economic hub and known for being a multicultural destination; nearly half of its residents come from other countries.

The image here shows a part of this large city's skyline including Canton Tower, the unique observation tower on the river crowned by a ferris wheel. Built in 2009, it was at one point one of the tallest towers in the world.
2. Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in what nation?

Answer: Malaysia

Rising more than four kilometres above sea level, Mount Kinabalu is Malaysia's highest peak. Found on Borneo, it casts its shadow near the city of Kota Kinabalu and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eminently climbable, the mountain is known for its guided trips; hundreds of visitors make the ascent every week to reach the top and marvel at the highly diverse ecosystem that is the surrounding rainforest. All of this is found in Sabah on the island of Borneo sitting in the South China Sea.
3. If you are visiting the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where are you?

Answer: In continental Asia

The home of Malaysia's government and a major economic hub of Southeast Asia, Kuala Lumpur is a massive urban area that sprawls in all directions and connects to the sea via Selangor and Port Klang to the west. The skyline there is known for its memorable twin towers, the Petronas Twin Towers, which were constructed in the 1990s, though there's a bit more to Kuala Lumpur than that; it's also a city with countless gardens, parks, caves, and public spaces.

It's hugely diverse and blends old colonial aesthetics with new modernity.
4. Mount Lavinia, a region of Colombo, can be found on the coast of the Indian Ocean in what two-word Asian country?

Answer: Sri Lanka

Known for its beaches and being the home of one of the nation's oldest hotels (which was once the governor's mansion), the region of Mount Lavinia is part of the Greater Colombo Area on Sri Lanka's western coast. Despite the name of the area containing 'Mount', the region is actually very flat and highly-developed.

The town's history has roots of numerous origins since the area was colonized by the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the English over the centuries. It's also home to the Dehiwala Zoo, one of the largest zoological gardens in the continent.
5. Hadrian's Bridge, also known as Ponte Sant'Angelo, crosses what river?

Answer: Tiber

Ponte Sant'Angelo, found in Rome, Italy, is a stone's throw away from the Vatican City, crossing the Tiber River in front of Castel Sant'Angelo, the Mausoleum of Hadrian. The Tiber River is one of the longest in Italy, descending from the northern reaches of the Apennine Mountains and weaving its way down to Rome before spilling out into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ponte Sant'Angelo was constructed in the 2nd century AD and is one of the oldest bridges in the city.
6. Civita di Bagnoregio, also known as 'The Dying City', is found in which of these spots?

Answer: Central Italy

A smaller commune in the city of Bagnoregio, the depicted village, perched atop cliffs in Central Italy, is a unique but beautiful location put at severe risk by natural erosion. Built two and a half millennia ago, the city was, at one point, a much more fortuitous stronghold accessed with difficulty by anyone other than locals. Today, it's only accessible to visitors by footbridge and is greatly reduced in size as many of its notable buildings have fallen off its cliffs.

This site can be found just south of Orvieto and is nearly halfway between Rome to the southeast and Siena to the northwest.
7. Mount Titlis, one of the most-visited ski destinations in Switzerland, is part of which of these alpine ranges?

Answer: Uri Alps

The twentieth-tallest peak in the Uri Alps, Titlis reaches a height of 3,238m above sea level and acts as one of the most notable mountains in the northern reach of this alpine expanse. Found south of Lucerne, Titlis is a popular ski destination and generally ends up being easier to reach than other notable observation spots in the country (like the Eiger and Jungfrau).

The Titlis Cliff Walk, which spans peaks more than three kilometres up, is commonly regarded as one of the highest tourist bridges on the continent. Because of its altitude, Titlis is rarely, if ever, without snow at its summit.
8. Depicted here is Plaza de España. It's aptly named because it's found in Spain, but in what city?

Answer: Seville

Translating literally to 'Spain Square', this tourist site in the heart of Seville was constructed at the end of the 1920s and acts as a centrepiece for the pavilions of Maria Luisa Park. It's one of the many parks along the River Guadalquivir, a waterway that stretches from Andalucia to the city of Cádiz on the southern coast. Seville, otherwise, is a vibrant city and home to beautiful structures and neighbourhoods constructed to reflect the diverse citizens it's housed over time (including Romans, Muslims, Christians, and the Moors).
9. The River Dee, specifically found in the Snowdonia Region, is in what country?

Answer: Wales

To visit Snowdonia, we would need to head out to Wales and visit the mountainous National Park home to Wales' highest peak. The River Dee starts there and winds east to Chester, England and out to the sea. Along the way it's crossed by aqueducts and bridges protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
There is another River Dee-- one in Scotland, in fact-- but it's a ways away from Snowdonia. It's actually up near Aberdeen in the north. There are a couple more Dees in England and another in Ireland.
10. Covering parts of Nevada and California, what desert contains Palmdale, Barstow, and Las Vegas?

Answer: Mojave

One of the driest regions in the United States, the Mojave is home to one of the country's flashiest cities-- Las Vegas-- and finds itself squished between other deserts to the north and south and mountains to the west and east. The desert here is also home to Death Valley, one of the Earth's lowest places on land and one of the hottest.

Despite everything arid about it, the Mojave is also where you'd head to see the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead and the reconstructed original London Bridge on Lake Havasu.
