Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The island of Trinidad is the southernmost island nation in the Caribbean, but it's partnered with what other island, depicted, slightly to the north?

Answer: Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago actually sit south of a great expanse of the northern coast of South America and can be found just off the edge of Venezuela. While Trinidad is the larger of the two, Tobago is known for its idyllic beaches, coves, and resorts. Originally settled by the Dutch, Tobago fell under British rule and joined Trinidad in claiming independence in the 1960s. Today, both are tropical havens for wildlife and common destinations for tourists looking for a relaxing, sunny vacation spot.
2. It's hard to imagine being higher up in a city like this! Which of these cities, the largest in Colombia, is the most populous city at its elevation in the world?

Answer: Bogotá

The Colombian capital city of Bogotá is found at an elevation of 2.6 kilometres above sea level, high in the plateaus of the Andes Mountains, making it one of the highest capital cities anywhere in the world. Higher still are the cities of La Paz and Quito (in Bolivia and Ecuador), but neither of those have as high a population. Made into a formal city in the 16th century, Bogotá was settled well before that time and it continues to act as a cultural hub for history and art in Latin America. It has long been one of the most important and largest cities anywhere in South America.
3. Cutting through Manaus, Brazil, which of these is the largest blackwater river in the world?

Answer: Rio Negro

A tributary of the Amazon, Rio Negro connects to the famous waterway in the city of Manaus where, famously, its dark waters merge with the clearer course of the Amazon proper at a defined point. From above, you can actually see the barrier at which the two types of water meet. Fed from headwaters in the Colombian highlands, the rainforest keeps the river at a steady flow as it courses more than twenty-five hundred kilometres through the Amazon. Spanish and Portuguese explorers specifically used the confluence between Rio Negro and the Amazon as the established site for Manaus because of its convenience and access to the Atlantic.
4. Which of these South American capital cities is NOT on the Atlantic coast?

Answer: Asunción

The capital city of Paraguay, Asunción is in a landlocked nation, meaning it has no actual coastline on any ocean. This being said, the city does sit on the Paraguay River which flows into the Paraná River, southward towards its mouth at the Atlantic (at Buenos Aires, coincidentally). One of the oldest cities in South America, Asunción is composed of several low hills and experiences warm temperatures year-round. Visitors looking for cultural experiences might be surprised to find that the city is well-known for its orchestral performances, ballet, and theatres.
5. This Château is found an hour north of Paris in what town in the Hauts-de-France region?

Answer: Chantilly

The resplendent Château de Chantilly, constructed in the mid-to-late 19th century, is surrounded by woodland in the north of France and is home to the Musée Condé, a public art museum of French works. The Hauts-de-France, found due north of Paris, is one of the most populated regions in the nation and contains well-known cities like Lille, Amiens, Dunkirk, and Calais. Chantilly is famously known for its namesake cream and lace, but also for horse racing.
6. The Trans-Ili Alatau stretches from China to Almaty, Kazakhstan. It's a branch of what Asian mountain chain?

Answer: The Tian Shan Mountains

The Northern Tian Shan Mountains cut through parts of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan though they are part of the greater Tian Shan Mountains, one of the larger chains stretching through China. The city of Almaty, at one time the capital of Kazakhstan, marks one of the westernmost points at the foot of this chain and it acts as a gateway to the beautiful landscapes occupied by nomadic citizens.

The highest peak in the area, Pik Talgar, is deep within Ile-Alatau National Park, just outside the city.
7. The landmark found here, known as Charminar, is a recognizable spot on the Musi River found in what Indian city?

Answer: Hyderabad

Built in the 16th century, the resplendent structure that is Charminar is one of India's most recognizable buildings and one of the key fixtures in the city of Hyderabad, a south-central destination and one of the most populated locations in the country. On one side of the building is the Musi River, a branch of the lengthy Krishna River as it stretches west to east through the nation. On the other side is the Laad Bazaar, one of the city's many old markets; it specializes in fine jewellery.
8. Connected to the Mekong River, what Cambodian lake, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, is close to the city of Siem Reap?

Answer: Tonlé Sap

A massive freshwater lake bolstered by plentiful rains during monsoon season, Tonlé Sap is a lifeline for Central Cambodia acting as a critical wetland for native biodiversity and as a home to locals, some of whom live on floating villages out on its waters. Part of the Greater Mekong Delta, Tonlé Sap flows into the Mekong proper closer to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. Siem Reap, found slightly upriver from Tonlé Sap, is the nation's second-largest city and the gateway to the temple complex at Angkor Wat.
9. Rizal Park (or Luneta Park) is a massive urban space in what world capital?

Answer: Manila, Philippines

Abutting onto the Walled City of Intramuros, Rizal Park includes one hundred forty acres of park space in the middle of the busy city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. A massive historical site and a place for meetings and festivals, the destination is flanked on most sides by important museums and cultural centres.

At its center stands the Rizal Monument, a 42ft-tall obelisk dedicated to Filipino nationalist José Rizal; it may be one of the most recognizable built sites in the country.
10. Which of these roadways, seen here, cuts through New Orleans' French Quarter?

Answer: Bourbon Street

Historic Bourbon Street is one of the most famous destinations in New Orleans, Louisiana known for its bars, restaurants, attractions, and Mardi Gras celebrations. Found in the French Quarter, the stretch was built and inhabited by the Creole people and influenced, culturally, by both the Spanish and the French before the Louisiana Purchase reshaped this part of the United States.

In the modern era it's a tourist go-to and one of the most frequented locations in the Big Easy.
