Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The West Highland Way is our first stop. What would you be well advised to wear while exploring this natural area?

Answer: Your hiking boots

From Milngavie (pronounced 'mullguy' you heard it here first) to Fort William, you will find 95 miles of some of the finest scenery in the world. This includes Glencoe which is awesome.

The West Highland Way is walked every year by around 80,000 hikers and backpackers. There are around ten hotels and inns on the route where refreshments may be partaken of, and banter to be had with fellow hikers and locals. This is very much part of the attraction. Don't bring your high heel boots, but do bring your craic!
2. If you visit Scotland in the month of July, you may want to go to the Wickerman Festival. What would you find there?

Answer: Rock and pop bands

The Wickerman festival is a music and arts festival held each year near Dumfries in Southwest Scotland. It is loosely based on a traditional pagan festival, and at the end the organisers burn a 30-foot Wickerman effigy. Everyone enjoys it except, perhaps, for the Wickermen.
3. Elvis Presley once visited Scotland, the only time "The King" ever set foot on UK soil. Where did he visit?

Answer: Prestwick

US Sergeant Elvis Aaron Presley, then 25, landed at Prestwick Airport Scotland on March third 1960. He was on his way home from Germany after finishing his two years of National Service with the U.S. Army. His plane had stopped to refuel. Around 300 fans turned up to greet him when the news of his arrival was leaked to the local community.

It has been claimed that Elvis was of Scottish descent. Had "The King" come home?
4. While eating out in Scotland, you notice on the menu a dish called "Crappit Heid". You ask the waiter what this is. What should be his reply?

Answer: It's a fish head stuffed with oatmeal and fish liver

Crappit Heid is a fish dish consisting of a large fish head (usually cod) that has been cleaned out, descaled and stuffed with oatmeal, suet, onion, white pepper and fish liver. It originated among the Northern Scottish fishing communities when the fish fillets were sold to the markets and the heads and offal were used as food to prevent waste. I can't recommend it as I haven't tried it myself, but I'm assured it tastes better than it sounds.

It is a very nutritious meal and a good source of cod liver oil. Rather you than me!
5. Some tourists like to visit locations they have seen in movies. You could be lucky and visit Brigadoon, the subject of a 1954 movie, but you won't find directions in this tourist guide. Why?

Answer: It is a mythical town which supposedly appears for one day every 100 years

The legend of Brigadoon lives on! It wasn't filmed in Scotland as director Vincente Minnelli believed that the MGM studio set mock-ups looked more like Scotland than the real thing (was he on something?). Brigadoon is reputed to appear for one day only every one hundred years.

I myself have only seen it twice.
6. There are possibly some tourists reading this guide who could have travelled from another world. What town in Scotland is reputed to be the number one location in the world for UFO sightings?

Answer: Bonnybridge

Bonnybridge is near Falkirk, and is located on Bonny Water. It is the place to go if you want to look for visitors from another world. The last time I was there, I spotted a Martian space ship and two flying saucers.
7. When in Scotland, make sure you visit the "dear green place" along the River Clyde--otherwise known as what?

Answer: Glasgow

The city of Glasgow is the "dear green place", from the Gaelic "gleas chu" or "glas gu" among other spellings. It means, as the question implies, dear green place. The city grew up around the River Clyde valley. After the Industrial Revolution, and because of its industry and shipbuilding, it became known as the second city of the British Empire. If you want to sound like a Glaswegian, you must pronounce it "Glesga".
8. There's gold in them there hills! Fools' gold! Which mining village in Scotland am I describing?

Answer: Leadhills

Lead, silver and gold have all been found in Leadhills, which is in South Lanarkshire. "Fools Gold" has also been found. Maybe if Leadhills had been called Goldhills, it might have been a better prospect to tourists and panned out better for the area! Fools are especially welcome here!
9. Galloway Forest Park in Southwest Scotland is considered to be one of the finest locations in the world to see what?

Answer: The night sky

One of only four designated Dark Sky Parks in the world, and the only one in Great Britain, Galloway Forest Park is the place to go if you want to sky-gaze. A dark-sky preserve is an area that is untouched by man-made light. I'm not sure about nocturnal birdwatching, but you may see a Haggis or two as their tails are luminous.
10. The town of Montrose in Angus is well worth a visit; it is a lovely historical town with a nice beach. If you're staying late you will hear a curfew bell at 10pm. Don't worry, you don't need to rush back to your hotel, it's just a tradition. What do they call this bell?

Answer: Big Peter

Made in Rotterdam over 300 years ago by Peter Ostens and named after its creator, Big Peter is a bell that is rung every night at 10pm in Montrose. It is mounted within the 220ft high church steeple tower that dates from 1832.

Big Ben is also a bell, housed within the Clock Tower in London. Big Bertha is a German gun, and Big Dingaling is...Well I'll let you work it out for yourself!
