1. What is the oldest university in Scotland?

Answer: St Andrews

St Andrews University was founded in 1411 by Bishop Henry Wardlaw.
Dundee University became an independent university after a 70 year association with St Andrews, in 1967.
University of Aberdeen 1495
Strathclyde University was founded in 1796 and was known as Anderson's Institute.
2. The 'Cobbler', a mountain near Arrochar stands 889m (2891 feet) high. What is the official name of The 'Cobbler'?

Answer: Ben Arthur

The 'Cobbler', with its three peaks, is said to resemble a cobbler working at his last. Ben Arthur is classed as a 'Corbett', not a 'Munro'.
A Corbett is a mountain over 2,500ft and mountains over 3,000ft are Munros.
No correction notes on the height please, no two of my sources give the same figure.
3. The Nazi, Rudolph Hess made a parachute landing in Scotland. What was the village called near to where Hess landed?

Answer: Eaglesham

Eaglesham, four miles southwest of East Kilbride, is a Georgian village that dates back to the Middle Ages. The village is a conservation area. Saturday 10th May 1941, was the date, with Hess breaking his ankle on landing, and being arrested by the local Home Guard.
4. Forfar, in eastern Scotland, is the administrative centre of which local authority?

Answer: Angus

The Royal Burgh of Forfar lies 14 miles northeast of Dundee. Five miles away(Kirriemuir), J.M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan was born. Forfar Athletic are the local senior football team, but my favourite fact
about Forfar is "The Bridie", a pie like pastry, filled with meat and onions.
5. In a Scottish court of law, who decides your punishment if found guilty?

Answer: Sheriff

Sheriff courts deal with the majority of civil and criminal cases in Scotland.
There is also the High Court and the District Court.
The Procurator Fiscal is the person that decides if your case goes to court, and is also the person in court acting for the prosecution.
Magistrates are in English courts.
Marshal just got put in, made up.

Scottish Law uses more Latin terms than English Law.
In England you have manslaughter, in Scotland the term used is culpable homicide.
6. The Scottish athlete, Eric Henry Liddell's achievements, winning gold and bronze medals at the Olympic games in Paris in 1924, were celebrated in the film "Chariots of Fire". Where was Liddell born?

Answer: China

Liddell was born of Scottish parents in Tientsin, China in 1902. His parents, Rev. and Mrs James Dunlop Liddell, were missionaries in China for the London Mission Society. Liddell, who also played Rugby union for Scotland, was also called "The Flying Scotsman". Nothing to do with the train though, or the 2006 movie about Grahame O'Bree the cyclist.
7. What county in Scotland would you finish up in if you were to do 'LE - JOG'?

Answer: Caithness

'LE - JOG' is the term sometimes used for the journey from Lands End to John O' Groats, the two farthest apart points on mainland Britain. John O' Groats, inaccurately, is considered the most northerly settlement. That goes to Dunnet Head. Caithness now comes under Highland Region. John O' Groats was named after a Dutchman, Jan de Grot, who settled there in the late 15th century.
De Grot created a ferry link to the Orkney Isles.
8. True or False: Scotland has no 'lakes', only 'lochs'?

Answer: False

The 'Lake of Menteith' in central Scotland is a successful trout fishery. We also have a man-made lake, "The Lake of the Hirsel".
9. Which of these four Scottish football clubs is the farthest north?

Answer: Ross County

Ross County play in Dingwall, which is 11 miles northwest of Inverness.
Queen of the South are the team based in Dumfries. St Johnstone are based in Perth.
10. Scots Law: "Hamesucken". What has happened if you have committed the act of "Hamesucken"?

Answer: Assaulted someone in their own house

Hamesucken, in Scots law, is the term used for the crime of assaulting someone in their own home.
"The felonious seeking and invasion of a person in his dwellinghouse".

The breaking in of a house alone is not "hamesucken", not until/if an assault has taken place.
