Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you are thinking about vampires, Vlad Tepes is a name you will find often. One of the castles he supposedly has a history with is Bran Castle, so Benny and Mona naturally visit it. In what European country will they find this castle?

Answer: Romania

It is not very clear if Bran Castle really is the castle of Dracula, the famous vampire created by author Bram Stoker. The character of Dracula was apparently based on the former Wallachian ruler Vlad Tepes, with Bran Castle being one of his strongholds. Even the connection between Tepes and the castle is not a very clear one, according to experts. It does not stop Bran Castle however from promoting itself as the offical Dracula castle. The castle can be found in the town of Bran, near the city Brasov and is open to the public. It dates back to the 14th century.

Vlad Tepes is a former leader of Wallachia, also known as Voivode. The area is currently part of Romania. During his reign he was known as a very sadistic and ruthless leader with a love for killing and torture, earning him the nickname of Vlad the Impaler. Vlad was supposedly killed at the end of 1476, but details are not clear about exactly when this took place. His head was presented to his main rival Basarab Laiota, after his death.
2. In France Benny and Mona find a museum dedicated to vampires. It can be found near a major French city in a district called Lilas, which can be reached by the Metro. In which city is the museum?

Answer: Paris

The Musee des Vampires is a small museum on the fringes of Paris. It can be found in a district called Lilas, which is outside the actual city, so using a map of the greater area can be useful. The museum is privately owned and visits can only be made by appointment. The collection houses various items related to vampires, ranging from books and paintings to art objects.

The museum was founded by Jacques Sirgent, an author originally from Canada. He is an expert on vampirism and all things associated with it. He has written various books on the subject and has gathered a unique collection of items related to the topic in the museum, with some of the books gathered there dating back to the 16th century. He works closely with French author Clothilde d'Albepierre. Together they have hosted guided tours to the famous cemetery Pere Lachaise.
3. In London, Benny and Mona go on a walking tour with a vampire theme. Some of these tours have been held in an area in the northern part of the city. It is known as the cemetery mentioned in Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (with a fictional name however). It is located near Waterlow Park, with Karl Marx being one of the famous people buried there. What is the name of this area?

Answer: Highgate

Walking tours with a vampire theme are found in London in the Highgate area, in the northern part of this city. One of the places of interest in this area is Highgate Cemetery. It is known for some famous people buried there, like Karl Marx for instance (buried in the East Cemetery). In Bram Stoker's "Dracula" Highgate Cemetery is one of the locations used, although in the novel it is called Kingstead Cemetery. One of the fictional victims of Count Dracula is buried there and will haunt it later as a vampire, searching for future victims.

One vampire walking tour starts at the underground station Highgate. It visited Highgate Cemetery, but also the Highgate Woods, the Dracula House and the places where serial killer Dennis Nielson has roamed in the past. Highgate Cemetery was said to be haunted by a real vampire around 1970. Two men, Sean Manchester and David Ferrant, both have made claims that the story is real, contradicting the other's version of the tale. Both have written books on their theory.
4. Benny and Mona stay in the UK for a while. Before Count Dracula arrived in London in the famous book written by Bram Stoker, he stayed at a seaside town in North Yorkshire, also the place where James Cook used to have his homebase. What is the name of this town?

Answer: Whitby

The town of Whitby is located in the county of North Yorkshire. The city is featured in the famous novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. In the book a Russian ship is shipwrecked near Whitby. The entire crew is lost, with only the captain being found, hanging dead to the helm of the ship. The journey of the ship was plagued by mysterious events, supposedly related to some cargo being transported from Transylvania. A large dog was seen going to shore from the ship, this being the vampire himself. Vampire lovers often come to town, with a vampire gothic weekend being held twice a year.

Whitby is not only known for its vampire association. It is also the location where famous explorer James Cook long had his homebase, doing his apprenticeship. A statue of him can be found in the town. There is also a statue of explorer William Scoresby, who lived and worked in the area as well. He is the inventor of the barrel's crow nest.
5. For a long time a city in the American state of Washington was pretty quiet and mostly known for its timber industry. Things changed when author Stephenie Meyer chose the city as the setting for her series of vampire-themed romance novels called "Twilight". The name of the city is derived from the various branches of the nearby rivers. What is the name of the city where the young girl Bella meets an ancient vampire?

Answer: Forks

The city of Forks is located in the state of Washington, in the county of Clallam. Its main source of income has traditionally been the timber industry. The quiet city drew a lot of vampire enthusiasts, when it was chosen by author Stephenie Meyer to feature as the location for her series of books on vampires called "Twilight". Tours were soon started to view the locations mentioned in the books, or at least the places that come close to those locations.

The "Twilight" series tells the story of the young girl Bella Swan, who moves to the city of Forks. Here she meets and falls in love with Edward Cullen, who turns out to be a vampire. She is soon hunted down by another vampire James, who wants to kill her. Later Bella also develops friendship with Jacob Black. who can turn into a werewolf. Bella has a child with Edward, a daughter called Renesmee.
6. Another famous vampire saga is TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Naturally this is fiction, but if Benny and Mona want to see some of the locations they should head for a large Californian city, known for the Capital Records Building and the Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Which city are they heading to?

Answer: Los Angeles

Los Angeles is considered to be the second largest city in population in the USA, after New York. It can be found in the southern part of the state of California. Despite being the state's largest city, it is not the capital (this is Sacramento). Some of the landmarks featured in the city are the Capitol Records Building, the Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the famous Hollywood sign.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is a TV show starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in the title role of Buffy Summers. She is a young girl destined to do her job as a "Slayer", someone chosen to battle the dark forces, while being assisted by a guide known as "The Watcher". The dark creatures she fights against naturally include vampires, as the title suggests, but it isn't limited to them. Buffy takes on anything dark, ranging from warlords to demons and witches. The TV show was aired between 1997 and 2003. The setting for the show is the fictional town of Sunnydale. One of the important features of this city is that it is located on a Hellmouth, a sort of portal where mystical energies meet. Most of the locations used are actually located in or around the city of Los Angeles. The high school in Sunnydale for instance is in reality the Torrance High School.
7. Since Benny and Mona like to watch television at night, they are also well acquainted with the TV show "True Blood". So they set out to the American state the series is set in, to locate the city of Bon Temps, the series' principal location. In which state, with its city of Baton Rouge, is Bon Temps supposed to be located?

Answer: Louisiana

The state of Louisiana is located in the southern part of the USA. Its largest city is New Orleans, but Baton Rouge is the capital. This city is located on the Mississippi River and is known for its petrochemical industry.

The TV show "True Blood" first aired in 2008 and is based on books written by Charlaine Harris. It features waitress Sookie Stackhouse, portrayed by Anna Paquin, living in the town of Bon Temps. In the city vampires and real people live together. Sookie has the power of telepathy. In the first episode she saves vampire Bill Compton, played by Stephen Moyer, from two people wanting to drain his blood. Slowly we learn more about the existence of vampires in the city and how their world relates to the real world. Bon Temps is a fictional city in the state of Louisiana. Most of the filming took place in southern California around Los Angeles. Part of the scenes actually were filmed in Louisiana however, for instance around Baton Rouge. An example of this is a scene at the end of season two, when Bill and Sookie eat at a French restaurant. The restaurant is really The Stockade Bed and Breakfast, just south of Baton Rouge.
8. In the city of San Francisco vampires were certainly brought back to life again, when vampire tours given by Mina Harker, a character from Bram Stoker's "Dracula", were taking place. The tours officially were stopped in 2012, but in what area of the city, one of the original seven hills, did they take place?

Answer: Nob Hill

The vampire tours in the city of San Francisco started in Nob Hill. This area of San Francisco is one of the hills the city is built on. It is traditionally seen as one of the first seven hills of the city, along with Telegraph Hill. The tour mostly centred around Huntington Park, with many stories of ghosts and vampires being shared by the character of Mina Harker (played by Kitty Burns).

The character of Mina Harker appeared in the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker "Dracula". In this novel Mina and her fiancé Jonathan join the fight against the famous Count Dracula. During the story the count manages to bite Mina's neck. This means she will become a vampire when she dies. Her friends manage to prevent this tragic fate by killing Count Dracula.
9. Benny and Mona travel to Central America on the hunt for vampire bats. These bats feed on blood, which explains the name. They find the animals during a visit to Corcovado National Park in a country with cities like San Francisco and San Jose. Which country do Benny and Mona find themselves in?

Answer: Costa Rica

The vampire bats is a species of bat that feeds on blood. They tend to hunt at night and bite their victim, while sucking up the blood. Depending on the species, they hunt for the blood of birds or mammals. The reference to the mythical creatures of vampires are of course easily made, since vampires also bite their victims and lead their lives mostly at night. The vampire bats can be found in both Central and South America.

One of the places that vampire bats can be spotted is Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica. This national park was established in 1975 and is located on the Osa Peninsula. It is known for its rich ecological diversity. Various endangered species can be found here, like the Baird's tapir and the harpy eagle.
10. Vampires are not only known to Western culture. In Indonesia and Malaysia they know creatures called a pontianak. They are female ghosts said to attack their victims by clawing them with their nails and eating their organs. A city in Indonesia is named after this ghost. On which island, shared by Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, do Benny and Mona find the city of Pontianak?

Answer: Borneo

A Pontianak is a female ghost that attacks male victims with its claws and eats their internal organs. They are said to be women who have died while being pregnant. The vampire-like creature forms a part of Indonesian and Malaysian folklore. Victims will often hear a baby's cry before being attacked. Other names for the creature are matianak or kuntilanak.

The Indonesian city of Pontianak is said to be named after the mythical creatures. The city forms a part of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan and is on the island of Borneo, an island shared by the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. It is mainly an industrial city, focusing on food production. The city is located near the equator, which explains the Equator Monument found here.
