Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these sodas doesn't normally contain caffeine?

Answer: 7-Up

7-Up is a lemon-lime flavored soda and it is caffeine-free. It is actually a part of the Dr. Pepper company, but the soda known as "Dr. Pepper" does have caffeine.

Sierra Mist and Sprite are similar (though not exactly the same) to 7-Up, given that they are also lemon-lime and caffeine-free. Sierra Mist is owned by Pepsi and Sprite is from the Coca-Cola company.

Speaking of Coca-Cola, that normally has caffeine, although I didn't decide to use it as an incorrect answer. As for Barq's Root Beer, it is, interestingly, the only root beer that is *not* caffeine-free.

There are variants of Mountain Dew which don't have caffeine, but the original version of it does. The original Mountain Dew seems to have a citrus flavor that differs from regular lemon-lime because it includes orange flavor in it. PepsiCo owns Mountain Dew.
2. Although any of these could be cold if you really wanted them to be, which of these coffee drinks is always served cold or frozen?

Answer: Frappuccino

A Frappuccino is a trademark of Starbucks' coffee shops. Its name comes from blending the words cappuccino (a coffee drink) and frappe, which can mean a milkshake or other chilled drink.

A "frappe", when it refers to a milkshake or another type of cold drink (fruit-flavored, etc) it doesn't need to be related to coffee. However, McDonald's has a coffee beverage similar to the Starbucks' Frappuccino and it is called a Frappe. It seems that the word "frappe" is also often used by Americans to refer to a cold coffee beverage, regardless of who makes it.

In addition, there are cold Greek coffee drinks that are called Greek frappes. Traditional Greek frappes are made from instant coffee. The Starbucks in Greece sell both the Greek frappe and the Frappuccino, as they aren't exactly the same.

I've heard of iced lattes and some people enjoy drinking regular coffee with ice in it--thus I said that any coffee/espresso drink could be cold or frozen if you'd prefer that.
3. "Red tea" can mean two very different teas. In China, "red tea" is what Westerners call "black tea", while in the West, "red tea" refers to a red-colored herbal tea.

Answer: True

Another name for the red-colored herbal tea is rooibos. Herbal teas, unlike other teas, are naturally caffeine-free.

According to about.com, the reason why Chinese "red tea" is called "black tea" in the West is because the West tends to name teas after the color of their leaves, while China names teas based on their infusions.
In this case, red/black tea has very dark (almost black) leaves, but the infusion is lighter and closer to a red color. However, green and white teas have basically the same color leaves and infusions, so their titles are the same in China and the West.
4. The word mocha has two main definitions, at least when it comes to coffee. One refers to a superior type of coffee. The other is a flavor or drink, which includes coffee mixed with what?

Answer: Chocolate

As a coffee and/or espresso drink, a mocha (or "cafe mocha") is similar to a latte, but it has chocolate mixed in it. Chocolate syrup and chocolate instant powder are usually used.

Mocha can also be used to describe anything that has a mixture of coffee and chocolate in it. For example, there are mocha cakes and mocha brownies.

It can refer to a rich Arabian coffee or another variety that is of a superior quality. Yet another definition for the word is a shade of dark brown.
5. "Sweet tea", which is especially popular in Southern states of the United States of America, is (today) usually made from what?

Answer: Black tea

It is made from black tea (which is called "red tea" in China). It is often served very cold or as with ice in it (as in "iced tea").

According to Wikipedia, before World War II, this sweet tea was made from green tea. The war caused most sources of green tea to be cut off from the United States. India was British-controlled and produced black tea that the U.S. used, thus leading to sweet tea being made from black tea.
6. A "chocolate Dalmatian" (you heard me right) coffee beverage is topped with what kinds of chips?

Answer: Java and chocolate chips

A "chocolate Dalmatian" is made with white chocolate and topped with java and chocolate chips. It is a variation of a mocha. Java chips are apparently made from chocolate as well as coffee beans.

At first I was confused why they called it this, but then I got it--the white chocolate surface with the brown java and chocolate chips somewhat resembles the Dalmatian dog, which is white with black spots.
7. In American terms, what is a difference between a latte and a cappuccino?

Answer: Lattes contain more milk than cappuccinos do.

Lattes and cappuccinos are very similar. Both are made from espresso (a type of coffee) and steamed milk. But how they differ is that the latte is made with more milk than the cappuccino. Even though the cappuccino contains less milk, it *does* contain more foam on top. The latte has little foam on its top while the cappuccino has a lot, which makes it kind of a bubbly drink.

Appropriately, the word "latte" means "milk" in Italian. ("Caffe latte" means "milk coffee".)
Here's the thing though: since "latte" does mean milk, if you want to order the espresso drink in Italy, say that you want a "caffe latte." Otherwise, you'll be served a glass of milk.
8. Energy drinks are caffeinated. Which of these is/are *not* commonly included in energy drinks?

Answer: Ginger

The primary ingredient in energy drinks is caffeine, but other ingredients, such as taurine, ginseng, and various vitamins, including vitamin B, are often added. ("Energy drink" refers to a specific type of drink. Coffee, tea, and sodas aren't considered energy drinks, even though they might give a person energy.)

Taurine is an animo acid and it occurs naturally in certain foods, including fish and meat.

Interestingly, some energy drinks contain guarana, which contains caffeine and comes from a plant in the maple family. Guarana fruits are about the same size as coffee beans.

Ginger is not usually used in energy drinks, but is sometimes used in baking and cooking.
9. When coffee is "black", it has no sugar or cream/creamer in it. What is a "flat white"?

Answer: It is similar to a latte, but with a smoother texture.

The "flat white" was developed in Australia and New Zealand, according to Wikipedia.

Other sources state that while it is similar to a latte, its texture is smoother and more velvety than a latte's.
One source explains that a latte is like a milky coffee, with a little bit of foam on top, while a flat white has such smoother milk and foam that it feels like drinking pure espresso, but "yummier" (or with other flavors mixed in it).
10. Which of these uses honey as a main ingredient?

Answer: Cafe Miel

In both French and Spanish, "miel" is honey. Other ingredients in the cafe miel include cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or vanilla extract.

A cafe breve is made with steamed half-and-half (half milk and cream). A Vienna coffee drink is made by infusing whipped cream into the coffee.
An eggnog latte doesn't include honey, but it is a popular autumn and winter drink that includes eggnog and spices in it.
