2. A United States five cent coin is called a nickel. What was unusual about most nickels minted from 1942 through 1945?

Answer: They didn't contain any nickel

The nickel five cent piece was first struck in 1866, eventually replacing an earlier silver coin called a half dime. The coin was called a "nickel" because it was made of an alloy of 25% nickel and 75% copper. When the United States entered WWII, nickel was deemed to be a highly important strategic metal, so early in 1942 the alloy was changed to 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese (some 1942 nickels were produced using the old alloy).

These so-called "war nickels" are seldom found in circulation, because their high silver content makes them worth more than their face value. Canada also removed the nickel from its five cent coins during WWII.

5. What do you call the thin, stringy substance you find under the outer layers of an ear of corn?

Answer: corn silk

As one of the answers suggests, that stringy substance is called "corn silk". Interestingly, corn silk is considered to have "demulcent properties" and is often used in herbal remedies. A demulcent is defined as an agent that forms a film over mucous membranes and is sometimes used to relieve minor pain and swelling of certain membranes.

Herbal demulcents made from corn silk are mostly used in the manufacture of certain cough remedies.

7. Although it doesn't appear to be the truth the Scandinavian delicacy lutefisk really is prepared with what substance?

Answer: Lye

Lutefisk actually means "lye fish". Typically whitefish are used to prepare lutefisk, which is a labor intensive undertaking. Initially the fish is soaked in water for four to six days. The water is changed once a day for the duration. During this process the fish swell up and proteins breakdown resulting in a gelatinous texture.

As if this doesn't sound tasty enough (gulp!) the fish is then saturated with lye and undergoes another four to six day water bath with attendant water changes. Finally, the fish is boiled in salted water and served with either a butter or white sauce.

This dish is considered a Scandinavian Christmas Eve tradition or a special meal for religious holidays and/or entertaining guests.

8. Bottled kambucha must have an alcohol content under what percentage, to be purchased by minors in the US?

Answer: 0.5%

Kambucha tea has a slight alcohol content due to the fermentation process. Most bottled varieties contain less than 0.5% and are legal for minors to purchase. Some varieties may have a higher alcohol content and will be labeled as such, so minors are not legally able to purchase them.
