Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this simple yet effective game, players take turns to roll the dice and then race to be the first to snatch the tile with a matching pattern. In which game do you need to be able to strike fast in order to win?

Answer: Cobra Paw

Although it's called "Cobra Paw", this game has a ninja cat theme, even featuring cat-related humor in the instructions. Cobra Paw, which is fun for the whole family, has its own mythology. It tells the story of an ancient stone-snatching game called Clawfuku, invented by the mysterious Phee Lion. Phee Lion's paws were so fast that when he snatched a stone a destructive wind would wreak havoc on the land. Eventually he was defeated by Master Meow, a wandering ninja cat who had perfected the better "Cobra Paw" technique. Cobra Paw tournaments are held to honour the legacy of Master Meow and try to rediscover his Cobra Paw technique.

The tiles are each decorated with a unique pair of "ancient" Japanese style symbols, with matching symbols on the dice.

After they are rolled, everyone tries to snatch the tile matching the two symbols shown on the dice. Players are encouraged to respect their opponents and to use ninja-like accuracy to grab stones using one hand, or in this case "paw".
2. A card game with circular rather than rectangular cards, which comes in a tin, the aim of this game is to find the matching picture or symbol on two of the cards. With different names in the UK/USA, which game is it?

Answer: Dobble/Spot It

It's not as easy as it sounds. Each of the 55 cards only features eight out of 50 symbols, and they can appear in different sizes and orientations. Every card shares exactly one symbol in common with every other card. There are many different versions, including several for kids.

The game as it is played today was launched in 2009, but it was based on a logic problem by Rev. Thomas Penyngton Kirkman going back to 1850. With some refinements from the 1970s, changes were made by Jacques Cottereau to turn the logic problem into a card game.

In 2008, Denis Blanchard refined one of the earlier versions to make it both faster and more complex. Dobble was born. With instructions for variations in the game, one small tin holds the potential for lots of fun.
3. In the card game "Exploding Kittens", what is the only card that can save you from exploding if you draw an Exploding Kitten card?

Answer: Defuse card

The premise of the game is simple--if you explode, you lose. Players take turns playing and drawing cards, and the only way to avoid exploding upon drawing an Exploding Kittens card is to play a Defuse card. A Nope card stops any action with the exception of the Exploding Kitten card.

A Skip card allows a player to end the turn without drawing a card. Other card types include Shuffle, See the Future, Attack, and Favor cards. Playing a pair of cards lets you steal a card from another player.
4. In "Betrayal at House on the Hill", players explore rooms on the upper floor, the ground floor, and the basement of an old mansion. What is the name of the game's first expansion which adds a new level to explore?

Answer: Widow's Walk

During the first phase of the game, players turn over tiles to explore a new room in the game. Depending on the room, players can get items or draw event or omen cards. The second phase of the game is called the haunt. After every omen card is drawn, players make a haunt roll. If the haunt is triggered, then a traitor is revealed and the players are split into two groups: the heroes and the traitor(s). Then, each group is given a set of instructions on how to win the game.

The "Widow's Walk" expansion to "Betrayal at House on the Hill" adds the roof as a new floor to explore. It also adds new events, items, omens, and haunts to the game.
5. In "Mysterium", all but one of the players take on the role of psychics to try and solve the mystery of a murder that happened at Warwick Manor. What role does the remaining player take?

Answer: Ghost

At Warwick Manor, the psychics gather on Samhain to conduct a séance to make contact with a ghost. The ghost tries to communicate with the psychics to help them discover who murdered him, with what weapon, and in what location. At the beginning of each turn, the ghost provides each psychic with a vision card to help them guess the character, location, or object.

The ghost is not allowed to talk or gesture to communicate with the psychics while they discuss their thoughts and interpretations of the visions. During the spectral manifestation phase of the turn, the ghost communicates with the psychics to let them know if their guesses are correct.

At the end of all turns, players will vote on who the culprit is. If the majority of the players votes for the correct answer, then everyone wins and the ghost's spirit can rest.
6. In which card game do players control a family and try to lower their family members' self-worth as much as possible before they die?

Answer: Gloom

In "Gloom", players can play Modifier or Event cards on members of their own family, or a member of another player's family. These cards will raise or lower the Pathos points for that family member and some of them have special effects. Players can also play Untimely Death cards, which according to the rules, "turn worthless living Characters into valuable dead ones". Once an entire family has died, players add up the Pathos points for each of their dead family members.

The player whose family has the lowest self-worth wins!
7. Named after a medieval fortified city in France, which game has players lay tiles to build cities and roads, and claim cloisters and fields to score points?

Answer: Carcassonne

On each turn, players draw tiles and place them next to other tiles in an effort to form cities or roads. Players may choose to play one of their game pieces, called 'meeples', on the newly laid tile. This allows them to claim the city, road, cloister, or field on that tile.

As the tiles are played, it is also possible for city fragments or fields to merge into one and for players to share the points for the city or field. After all the tiles have been laid, players count up how many points they have earned from completing roads or cities, and claiming fields and cloisters.
8. How many diseases are present in the board game "Pandemic" at commencement of play?

Answer: Four

The board game "Pandemic" was released by Z-Man games in 2007. With four major epidemics threatening to wipe out different areas of the world, players are randomly assigned one of seven specialist roles and then work together to try to solve each crisis. Those specialists are dispatcher, medic, scientist, quarantine specialist, scientist, operations expert and a researcher.

It is vitally important for players to work together to find cures for these threats to mankind. Forty-eight cities are represented on a world map on this game.

It is urgent to prevent the spread of the four diseases threatening the survival of mankind be halted before a world wide epidemic occurs! In order to win, players must find cures for all four diseases before any one of three game-ending events occurs.

These events include the outbreak marker reaching the end of its track, not having enough disease cubes to place on the board during an outbreak or infection, or a player being unable to draw two cards at the end of his/her turn.
9. Which of the following is one of the resources that players can collect in the board game "Stone Age"?

Answer: Gold

"Stone Age" is a board game that was published by Hans im Gluck in 2008. Set in prehistoric times, the object of this game is to become a type of stone age property mogul, the controlling force in a tribe, and amass resources. At the start of each turn, players take turn placing their people on the board. Players can have their people collect resources, hunt, make new people, work in the field, make tools, acquire a civilization card, or claim a building. Players hunt in order to have enough food to feed their people at the end of every turn, and they collect gold, wood, brick, and stone to pay for civilization cards and buildings.

These activities give players points and at the end of the game, whichever player has the most points wins!
10. Which main means of transport features in the game "Ticket to Ride"?

Answer: Trains

Published by Days of Wonder in 2004, players of this board game are initially dealt four train carriage cards and three destination cards. The destinations cards feature images of cities on each. Players must keep at least two of the three destinations cards, with the goal being to secretly work out a route to connect the two cities while journeying around the board. Nine different train carriage cards are included in a pack and players draw and discard these as needed during play. Players must work their way along various routes to their chosen destinations by utilizing the train cars they draw during their turn.

At the end of the game, points are allocated on the success rate of completing the routes from destination cards and the routes between cities that players connected along the way, with an extra ten points awarded for the longest uninterrupted route achieved by any player.
