Answer: Russia

Upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia became the largest country in the world by area. Siberia is an area is north central Russia known for being one of the coldest areas of the world.

Yakutsk is the capital and largest city of the Russian Republic (similar to a state or province) of Sakha. It is located east of Siberia. The territory of Yakutsk on the Risk board is similar in area and location to the republic of Sakha.

Kamchatka is a peninsula that makes up part of the easternmost section of Russia. Both Kamchatka and Sakha are part of the area administrated as the Far East Federal District. The territory in Risk which is called Kamchatka also includes the Chukotka which is the part of Russia closest to Alaska.

In addition to these territories, the territory of Irkutsk encompasses part of Asian Russia on the Risk board.
2. Which of these was NOT a territory in the original version of Risk?

Answer: West Africa

The western part of Africa is included in the Risk territory known as North Africa. While the boundaries on the Risk board are not exactly defined (and many of the African countries were not yet independent when Risk was originally released), the territory of North Africa consists of the Mediterranean bordering countries of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, as well as all of the countries bordering the Atlantic down through Cameroon. It extends east to Chad, although does not include the Central African Republic.

The Risk territory of East Africa includes the Sudan and South Sudan, the countries in the Horn of Africa, as well as Kenya and Tanzania.

In Risk, South Africa includes the southern part of mainland Africa with a northern border of Angola, Zambia, and Malawi.

Answer: Ireland

Ireland is included under the umbrella of Great Britain in Risk. Scandinavia consists of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. (It took me years to unlearn this configuration of Scandinavia and realize that the real one includes Denmark rather than Finland.)

Northern Europe includes the Benelux countries as well as Denmark, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria.
4. Which of these was NOT a territory in the original version of Risk?

Answer: Mexico

Mexico is included as part of the Central America territory which also includes the countries in the Caribbean as well as those in Central America.

The United States is split up into three sections, Alaska, Eastern United States, and Western United States (with Hawaii not included in the map). The division between the Eastern and Western US puts New Mexico in the west and Texas and Oklahoma in the east at the southern end. The border then shifts east with Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas forming the eastern border of the Western United States.
5. Which of these was NOT a territory in the original version of Risk?

Answer: Tasmania

Tasmania is part of Eastern Australia on the Risk board along with the remaining Australian territories except Western Australia and South Australia which are both included in Western Australia.

In addition to including most of its namesake, the Indonesia territory includes Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines. The eastern part of Indonesia is included as part of New Guinea which is the fourth territory that is part of the Australian continent in Risk. The New Guinea territory includes the island of New Guinea as well as several small islands to the east of it in the Pacific.

Answer: Colombia

Colombia is included as part of the Venezuela territory along with Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

The territory of Argentina contains the three southernmost South American countries, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.

Peru encompasses the remainder of South America excluding Brazil which is its own territory in Risk. Besides Peru, those countries are Ecuador, Bolivia, and Paraguay.

Answer: Thailand

Thailand is included in the territory called Siam in Risk. Siam covers much of Southeast Asia including Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia in addition to Thailand.

Most of China is included in the Risk territory of China, although the northeastern part is included in Mongolia rather than China.

In addition to its namesake, the territory of India also includes Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Yes, you read that correctly, the country of Afghanistan is not included in the territory of Afghanistan in Risk.

The Risk territory of Afghanistan includes most of the former Soviet Republics located in Asia excluding Russia. These include Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan.

Answer: Libya

Libya is immediately west of Egypt. In Risk, both are included in the territory of Egypt. The territory in Risk called Madagascar is equivalent to the Republic of Madagascar in real life.

The Congo in Risk includes Central African Republic, both Congos, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea.
9. Which of these was NOT a territory in the original version of Risk?

Answer: Greece

Greece is included in Southern Europe along with Italy, Switzerland, the Balkan countries, Hungary, and Romania.

Western Europe has Spain, France, and Portugal. Ukraine on the Risk board is made up of the European sections of the former Soviet Union, including the European portion of Russia.

The Yukon and Nunavut are lumped into Northwest Territories on the Risk board.
