Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character is followed in the narrative of Primer 1?

Answer: Martin

In Primer 1, the narrator follows Martin, who is at his first day of school. The other three children listed as incorrect answers are also present. Seeing as the kids are new to school, they don't know what to expect. Their teacher, Mrs. Murphy, is a kind woman, but Martin is somewhat puzzled by her polite actions on the first day.

It is also shown that Colin is highly influenced by his peers. After the first day of school, Martin shows off some of his new 'vocabulary' to his family.
2. Which of these events destroyed the public school in the story?

Answer: A fire

In Primary Three, the students of St. Lizzy's were shocked to find that the schoolhouse occupied by the Primary Ones, Twos, and Threes was burnt down. All of the students immediately began to single out the rowdier, more daring students of the higher grades such as Primary Six or Seven, though none were sure who could have had the guts to do it. Karen, who did not hear of the news, went to school the day following the fire and was forced to spend the day with two of her fellow students.
3. What was the nickname given to Mr. Monahan by the students?

Answer: Momo

Momo is regarded as one of the meanest teachers at the primary school, and often the students would get caught by this character resulting in a belting. When the one school burnt down, Momo announced an assembly and nearly proceeded to belt one of the children, but his false teeth flew out the door in a surprising and ironic twist.

Despite the memorable event, Momo still holds a high authority and instills fear in schoolchildren.
4. Who ruined Paul's shot at the soccer goal in Primary Five?

Answer: Robbie

In Primary Five, the boys of the school played soccer (in an overcrowded field). Colin, who was in the goal, was nearly scored on by Paul, who had an amazing interception, but at the last moment, Robbie knocked the ball in. Despite this, many of the Primary Fives and Sixes recognized Paul as the scorer and scolded Robbie for making such a move. Around the same time, the girls of the school would argue over Chinese Ropes.
5. What is James Doon's nickname given in Primary Seven?

Answer: Noodsy

In Primary Seven, Martin wrote his name backwards during a lazy rainy day and showed it to James and the others, who then mimicked him. James Doon, whose name backwards was Noodse Maj, had his name transformed into Noodsy Magic (then shortened to Noodsy).

The name followed him all through school. Around this time, the classmates suffered through their last teachers of St. Elizabeth's Primary School and prepared for a life of high school.
6. What is the name of Robbie's brother?

Answer: Boma

Boma was widely-regarded as one of the baddest bullies throughout the children's' primary and high school years. Being Robbie's brother helped students attribute Robbie's often bad behavior to his brother's actions. On one occasion, Boma threw mud at Helen and Martin, known as a teacher's pet in primary school, stood up to him (though he was beat up anyways).

In high school, this works to his benefit. He is known by kids across town for being the only kid to stand up to Boma.
7. In First Year at Saint Grace's, what creatures are brought into the boys' locker room?

Answer: Frogs

In the first year of High School, the kids are thrown into a mix of kids from other schools and everyone takes a new path. Many of the boys from St. Elizabeth's still group together despite the fact that they have different classes. In one physical education class, two boys bring a box of frogs into the change room to sell them, but they end up racing the creatures instead (despite their lack of movement).

When the gym teacher arrives, the boys scramble for the frogs, which become alive with stored energy and stuff them into the container again.
8. Which of these did Colin inherit from his father?

Answer: A hotel

Prior to Colin's death, Colin had tried to have the hotel demolished, and as Martin learned from Scot, his old friend, the demolition was temporarily being held up. This hotel is where the characters and students of the story held their post-graduation party and everyone said their temporary goodbyes until Colin was murdered.
9. Who did Martin refuse a dance with in high school?

Answer: Joanne

In Third Year, Martin asked Helen to dance at a school function, but she was frightened of the consequences placed upon her by the popular girls and fled the room. Joanne attempted to dance with Martin in order to one-up Helen, but Martin refused. At the end of the novel, Martin finally does as Joanne to dance since she is the one who helps him the most in discovering the answer to the mystery behind the murder.
10. Who killed Colin Temple?

Answer: None of these

In the end, Martin and Karen discover that Eleanor and Robbie were somewhat related since Eleanor's father slept with Robbie's mother. Robbie's father killed Eleanor's father and his body was in the foundation of Colin's hotel. Colin discovered this and killed Robbie's non-birth father. When Robbie discovered this, Colin killed himself to evade the consequences.
