Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The world of Abarat has many different creatures and insects. Which of the following was not mentioned in the story?

Answer: Quijers

There were an incredible number of animals living in the Abarat world. Some creatures resembled regular animals; others were completely alien. Gilleyants were large ocean-living creatures that attacked Methis and Candy as they flew over the water. Kythrus, also water creatures, had yellow eyes and flippers for feet.

The creatures attacked Letheo and Candy when they traveled in Letheo's magic-enhanced speeding ship. Fingoos were seen when Malingo and Candy visited the large, busy Carnival; they had snouts and used them to read your mind.

There was no mention of any "Quijers" in the story.
2. What was the name of the weapon Otto Houlihan used to try and destroy Candy?

Answer: Star-Striker

Houlihan, the Criss-Cross Man, purchased the weapon called the Star-Striker, a four-foot long bat that had once been used in a sport. The weapon had been used to literally hit stars in the sky. When Houlihan attempted to strike Candy with it, she was able to protect herself. The Star-Striker seized control of his body and eventually destroyed him.
3. The ghost of Henry Murkitt attempted to warn the people of Chickentown by writing a message on a wall. What was that message?

Answer: Higher ground

Norma Lipnik, who worked at the Comfort Tree Hotel in Chickentown, discovered the message written on a wall in room 19, where Henry Murkitt committed suicide. The only words written were "Higher ground." It was indeed a message from the ghost himself, who had never left the room since he had died. He worried for the people who lived in the town once named after his family.
4. What kind of a spell did Malingo use to protect himself against bullies in the Carnival?

Answer: Steel skin

Malingo used an enchantment to create something called feather-steel to protect himself against rude bullies he encountered in Chickentown. When one of the men hit his chest, the bones in his hand all broke because the feather-steel was so strong. Malingo used another spell to make it so whenever they threw a punch at him, their fists would fly back and hit themselves instead.
5. How did John Mischief distract the baby dragon?

Answer: He and his brothers sang a song

Finnegan Hob stomped on the egg of the fearsome dragon Nythaganius Pejorius and the baby was hatched. It immediately climbed up his leg and bit down hard. When Hob freed himself, it began to slither to Tria. John Mischief and his seven brothers Sallow, Fillet, Serpent, Moot, Drowze, Slop, and Pluckitt began to sing to distract the young beast.

Much like the song "Row Your Boat" the brothers sang and exchanged lyrics to "The Pugwit Song" and it worked as it confused the dragon.
6. What was the name of the ship Malingo captained?

Answer: The "Lud Limbo"

The three ladies of the Fantomaya offered Malingo the ship named "Lud Limbo." He hesitantly agreed to become its captain. They wanted him to venture to save Candy. The ship also had a Sea-Skipper named Deaux-Deaux, who met Candy in the first book. The "Wormwood" belonged to Christopher Carrion.
7. Which of the following was not a Beast of Efreet?

Answer: Fetteree

All but the Fetteree were Beasts of the Efreet. Waztrill were eighteen feet tall and had armored skin. Sanguinius were large beasts with shaggy fur covered in red parasites. Thrak were purple creatures who housed large bugeyes on a small head. There was also Vexile, a serpent-like beast with a head like a shovel and the Fever Gibe with heads like opening and closing fans.

The Beasts lived on the island of Efreet. Candy encountered a Fetteree at the Carnival; it was a large creature that bawled like a baby and had rubbery limbs.
8. Who or what was responsible for the death of Diamanda?

Answer: A Sanguinius

Diamanda visited Candy when she was stuck in the snow-filled island of Efreet. Candy had been running from one of its beasts, a Sanguinius, when she spotted the eldest woman of the Fantomaya. Diamanda used a spell to make the beast completely relaxed and still, which ended its pursuit.

However, Carrion, from the Dead Man's House, reversed the spell and the Sanguinius immediately attacked the poor woman. However, Candy dreamt that Diamanda was very happy and knew she was well.
9. What was the name of Letheo's medicine?

Answer: Green thuaz

Green thuaz was a thick liquid that prevented Letheo from turning into a bloodthirsty reptilian creature. Christopher Carrion was the only one who appeared to own such a medicine. Letheo's skin was different shades of purple and had scales in some areas. It hurt him greatly when he was in need of the green thuaz. The rest of the options were just creatures of the Abarat.
10. Which character from this list survived?

Answer: Tom

Diamanda was killed by a Sanguinius while trying to rescue Candy. She lived on as a spirit and successfully warned most of the citizens of Chickentown leave the town before the Izabella entered the city. When Carrion arrived in the city in the ship "Wormwood" a great battle was had. Finnegan, Malingo, the John Brothers, Tom, Tria, Captain McBean, Deaux-Deaux and Geneva waged war against Mater Motley's stitchling army. Candy spotted Tria and McBean's lifeless bodies and knew the Hag was responsible.

After Candy knocked his hats off, Wolfswinkel had a heart attack and also died.
