Both young dwarves lose their lives in the Battle of Five Armies later in the novel. They were a delightful twosome who were strong, skillful workers. Fili and Kili are the ones who found the cave that was the doorstep of the Goblin fortress.

After the rescue, the Eagles transport the company to the Carrock. From there, Gandalf explains that he will not be accompanying them farther than Mirkwood. The dwarves then go into a state of melancholy at this news. He then takes the Company to Beorn's house.

Gollum had been living in the cave so long that he almost couldn't answer the eggs riddle. After the teeth riddle, the reader learns that Gollum has six teeth. Ring was the answer to a question that really shouldn't have been accepted as it wasn't a riddle. Bilbo had just been thinking out loud.

His last words to Bilbo were that he wished everyone in the world was like him. (Meaning, he wished everyone was like Bilbo.) The old king was very stubborn and greedy.

The Elvenking first captures Thorin. When Thorin will not let slip his reason for being in Mirkwood, the Elvenking gets angry and decides to keep him prisoner until he talks. Then the dwarves are captured and they don't spill the beans either, earning their own prison cells.
