Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the book Bilbo is visited by several Dwarves and Gandalf. Thorin Oakenshield and Gandalf arrive with the last group of 'visitors'. How many Dwarves came with Thorin and Gandalf?

Answer: 3

The Dwarves arriving with them were Bofur, Bifur and Bombur. Unlike other Dwarves, Thorin said nothing about 'at your service' since he was too important for that. He was Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, who had been King under the Mountain when Smaug invaded it and took it for his own. Thorin descended directly from Durin the Deathless, the oldest of the seven fathers of Dwarves. Bofur, Bifur and Bombur were the only Dwarves in the company not of Durin's line.

They descended from the Dwarves of Moria but were not of Durin's Folk, who had founded Moria. All other Dwarves were of Durin's Folk. Ori, Nori and Dori were more remote kinsman to Thorin but the others - Fíli, Kíli, Balin, Dwalin, Óin and Glóin were closely related to him.
2. During the 'meeting' Bilbo says that he will try to do what the Dwarves want him to do even if he has to fight certain creatures in the Last Desert. What creatures did Bilbo name?

Answer: Were-Worms

'Tell me what you want done and I will try it, if I have to walk from here to the East of East and fight the wild Were-Worms in the Last Desert.' Those were Bilbo's words. Were-Worms probably don't exist and are mythical creatures. They are not mentioned anymore by Tolkien in his work and were probably part of Hobbit tales.

The Last Desert is probably a mythical place as well or might exist somewhere in the far East of Middle-Earth.
3. 13 Dwarves had assembled. But they needed a 14th man for good luck (13 is a unlucky number after all) and as a burglar. Who chose Bilbo to be the 14th member?

Answer: Gandalf

Glóin tells Bilbo that they were looking for a 14th member and burglar and that Gandalf had told them that such a man lived in this place. Gandalf had marked the door himself so the Dwarves could find him. Of course Bilbo was not happy with this, but the Tookish part would take over and give him the spirit of adventure.
4. Gandalf spreads out a map which they all take a look at. It contains a map of the Mountain and the surroundings. Whose map had this been originally?

Answer: Thror's map

Gandalf mentions that it had been made by Thorin's grandfather, Thrór. It also contains special runes that only light up in the moonlight.
5. What was the target of the Dwarves and their undertaking?

Answer: Erebor, the Lonely Mountain

The Dwarves' intent was to drive the dragon Smaug out of their ancient mountain stronghold in Erebor. Smaug had taken it during the reign of Thorin's grandfather Thrór. Great treasure was horded there; not only the immense treasure the Dwarves already had possessed, but also loot which Smaug gathered during his long years.

Near Erebor had been the city of Dale. Smaug eventually destroyed it, and its lord, Girion of Dale, was killed. Esgaroth had been a township at the Long Lake, a bit further away. Originally it had been built on the shores of the lake but was abandoned for a safer town in the lake itself. It's usually called Lake-Town. The company passes it on their way to Erebor and Smaug eventually comes out to destroy it.

Moria had been another ancient fortress of Thrór's people, the House of Durin. They had been driven out by a Balrog long ago. Thrór returned to Moria but was killed by the orc 'Azog'. The Dwarves promptly responded by going to war. In the battle at Moria, Thorin gained his surname 'Oakenshield', hewing an oak branch of a tree after his shield was split. He used it to defend himself against enemy blows. Moria features more prominently in "The Lord of the Rings".
6. On their journey eastwards, in the Trollshaws, the company runs into three Trolls and is captured, save for Gandalf. What was not the name of one of these Trolls?

Answer: Tim

The Trolls were Bert, Tom and William Huggins. Only William had a surname. It is doubtful that those were the real names of the Trolls but they were what they called each other in the Common Speech. They were so called 'Stone-Trolls' and they could not endure the light of the Sun. If Sunlight touched them they would turn to stone and that is what happened. Gandalf cunningly incited an argument between the three Trolls, who already had been bickering about how to eat the 14 captives.

They argued so long that they forgot about time and when the Sun came out they were turned to stone.
7. After being set free by Gandalf the companions look for the Troll's hole. They found the cave but it was locked by a stone-door. Who found the key to open it?

Answer: Bilbo

Bilbo found it near the place the Trolls had been arguing. It had fallen out of William's pocket. To the Troll it would have seemed very small but to Bilbo and Dwarves it seemed rather large.
8. Inside the Trollcave Thorin and Gandalf each take a great sword while Bilbo takes a long knife. Later it would turn out that these blades were made by Elves, High Elves of the West. Who had been the previous owner of the sword that Gandalf had taken?

Answer: King Turgon of Gondolin

The swords of Gandalf and Thorin were identified as 'Glamdring', the 'Foe-Hammer' (which the Orcs called 'Beater') and 'Orcrist', the 'Orc-Cleaver'(which Orcs called 'Biter'). Elrond recognised the craftmanship of the Noldorin of Gondolin, from whom he was descended. Gandalf's sword had been the sword of King Turgon of Gondolin, Elrond's great-grandfather. Turgon's daughter had been the grandmother of Elrond.

He had perished in the Fall of Gondolin and presumably his sword had been taken as loot and somehow found its way out of Beleriand. Thorin's sword also came out of Gondolin but its owner was not identified.

It might have been the sword of Ecthelion of the Fountain, who slew and was slain by Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. King Fingon was Turgon's elder brother.

After the death of Fingolfin, their father, Fingon inherited the Kingship over his father's realm Hithlum, and the High Kingship over all Noldor in Middle-Earth. Elu Thingol (also known as Elwë Singollo) was the King of Doriath and father of Lúthien. Eöl the Dark Elf was a kinsman of Thingol and had ensnared Aredhel, sister of Fingon and Turgon.

She fled back to Gondolin with their son Maeglin and Eöl pursued them. He intended to kill his son but accidently killed his wife instead. The Gondolindrim cast him over the cliffs into the Great Sea. Ironically it would be Maeglin who betrayed Gondolin in the end. The knife taken by Bilbo was of course 'Sting' which he would later pass on to Frodo.
9. After their encounter with the Trolls they continue eastward and reach the Last Homely House. What is the location of this dwelling?

Answer: Rivendell

The Last Homely House is the House of Elrond, known to Men as Rivendell (the name of the valley in which it is located) and Imladris to the Elves. The company gets some rest there and Elrond takes a look at Thrór's map. Elrond also identifies the blades of Gandalf and Thorin.

The company will later visit the House of Beorn, east of the Misty Mountains. Dale is near Erebor and Bree is a village outside the Shire, inhabited by both Hobbits and Men. It doesn't feature in "The Hobbit".
10. Elrond discovers the moon-letters, runes that cannot be seen but in full moonlight. They reveal a secret entrance into the Lonely Mountain. They say that the keyhole to this door will only be visible on Durin's Day. Thorin then remarks that Durin was the founder of his house. What was this house of Dwarves called?

Answer: Longbeards

Durin's Folk were called the Longbeards and they were the first House of Dwarves, as Durin was the eldest of Fathers of the Dwarves. He was the first Dwarf to awaken in Middle-Earth, in Mount Gundabad to be precise, and he came to Moria. The Firebeards and Broadbeams are the only other Dwarven houses mentioned but their founders are not known.

There had been total of 7 Fathers. The ancestors of the Firebeards and Broadbeams had awoken in the Blue Mountains and probably founded Nogrod and Belegost.

The other 4 awoke in pairs somewhere in the East of Middle-Earth.
11. The company moves on through the Misty Mountains but takes shelter from the rain and stone-giants in a cave. They all go to sleep. In the night they are attacked by Goblins and taken captive, all but one. Who eluded capture?

Answer: Gandalf

Bilbo had woken up and saw the ponies disappear. He yelled, but in that instant the Orcs (called Goblins in "The Hobbit") came out and captured them. But Gandalf had been awoken by Bilbo's cry quickly enough to escape. There was a flash and the goblins that had tried to seize him were killed. Unfortunately Gandalf could not prevent the others being dragged off as prisoners.
12. The company is led to the Great Goblin, apparently the leader of the Orcs (who are called Goblins in this book) in this part of the Misty Mountains. He is enraged when he recognises Thorin's sword. But, before he can harm Thorin, he is slain by Gandalf. The Orcs flee and the company quickly leaves. Bilbo is carried, primarily by which dwarf?

Answer: Dori

Dori carried Bilbo and was at the back of the group. Unknowingly they were pursued by Orcs and one threw himself against Dori. Dori let Bilbo fall and Bilbo rolled into a side-tunnel. When he woke up the Dwarves were gone.
13. Bilbo is left alone by accident. He finds himself in the dark and tries to find his friends. What does he discover on the floor of the caves?

Answer: A ring

Bilbo finds a ring in the caves. Little does he know that it's a magic ring, the One Ring. It had belonged to the Dark Lord Sauron but was cut off from his hand at his defeat. It was lost for a long time until it had been found and carried into the Mountains.

The Ring would decide the fate of Middle-Earth, nearly 80 years later. Although in "The Hobbit" the ring seemed to be merely a magic ring. Tolkien hadn't settled down to create "The Lord of the Rings" yet. In this book the Ring seemed to be something good. Only later, in "The Lord of the Rings" is the connection with the One Ring made.
14. Bilbo encounters Gollum with whom he engages in a riddle game. Who asks the first riddle?

Answer: Gollum

Bilbo says that Gollum should ask the first riddle. Bilbo had no time to think of a quick riddle himself and wanted some time to think. Once Bilbo had the answer, he would ask a question in return. At the 10th riddle in total, (Bilbo's fifth) Gollum failed but the riddle was somewhat unfair. 'What have I got in my pocket?', Bilbo had been thinking, but he accidently spoke it out loud. Gollum thought that this was the next riddle and was not able to guess. So, Bilbo won and as agreed, Gollum must lead him to the exit. Gollum then finds out that Bilbo actually had a Ring in his pocket, his Ring.

He tries to get it back, but Bilbo escapes him, and the sight of Orcs scares Gollum away. Bilbo barely manages to escape the Tunnels and finally found his way out and went searching for his friends. Gandalf was arguing with Thorin while one, Balin, was on the look out for Bilbo. Bilbo was wearing his Ring and it made him invisible.

He went straight to Gandalf and Thorin, pretending to have sneaked by Balin.

His reputation with the Dwarves greatly increased after his story of escaping the Orcs.
15. The company gets attacked by Orcs and Wargs that hunted them after their escape. They fled up some trees and were swiftly surrounded. The Orcs decided to lay fire below the trees and burn them down, but the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains had heard the howling of the Wargs and the crying of Orcs. The Great Eagle himself led a host of his Eagles to investigate. They drove away the Orcs and Wargs and rescued the company from the trees. Whom did the Lord of the Eagles himself rescue?

Answer: Gandalf

The Lord of the Eagles (probably Gwaihir) seized Gandalf and bore him away. Bilbo was nearly left behind but managed to grab Dori's legs when Dori was lifted by another Eagle. The Eagles bore them to safety and dropped them near the Carrock.
16. The Company reaches the House of Beorn and with some clever work of Gandalf he invited them into his home. Beorn was a shapeshifter. His 'normal' appearance was that of a man. Into which animal could he change?

Answer: Bear

Beorn could change into a big Bear. His son, Grimbeorn and his descendants were said to have the same ability to some lesser extent. Beorn usually never invited strangers into his home but the story Gandalf told him made him curious. The company spend a night at Beorn's place in good safety as Orcs and Wargs didn't dare to venture there.
17. Beorn lends some ponies to the company to travel to the edge of Mirkwood. They arrive with little trouble and the ponies are sent back. Gandalf must take his leave from the company now and they go into the Forest of Mirkwood alone. Had Beorn followed the company to Mirkwood?

Answer: Yes

Yes, Beorn had followed them. His animals were like children to him. He wanted to make sure that nothing happened to his ponies. He possibly also wanted to make sure that the Dwarves would send them back once they came to Mirkwood. Bilbo had noticed a large bear looking at their campsites.

They let the ponies free once they reached Mirkwood. Again Bilbo saw a bearshape that seemed to follow the ponies. Gandalf left them at Mirkwood and the Dwarves proceeded with Bilbo. They were waylaid by giant spiders but Bilbo saved the day. Bilbo fought the spiders using the Ring and his sword. Bilbo named his sword 'Sting' after the battle.
18. What kind of people do the Dwarves meet after their escape from the Spiders?

Answer: Wood-Elves

They stumble upon Wood-Elves that are feasting in the woods. The Dwarves attempt to beg for food but the Elves were gone in a blink. Three times they try, and the last time they are captured and brought before the King. The King takes the Dwarves to his stronghold but Bilbo manages to sneak in unseen using the Ring.

He devises a plan and frees the Dwarves after acquiring the keys to their cells. They then escape in empty barrels that were regularly sent out a trapdoor into the river to the Men at the Lake.

These Elves were actually the Silvan Elves of Thranduil, whose son Legolas Greenleaf would be in the Fellowship of the Ring, roughly 80 years later. Thranduil's keep resembled that of his ancient kinsman Thingol in Doriath, being hewn into rock.
19. After escaping the Wood-Elves they end up in Lake-Town where they receive help and head towards Erebor. They proceed to the Ravenhill where the door is located. At the mountain it is Bilbo who finally discovers the keyhole to the side door. A thrush had given him the final hint. What was this thrush doing?

Answer: Caught a snail and knocked it on the stone

When the moon came the keyhole became visible; it was the New Year's night of the Dwarves, Durin's Day. A thrush had been pecking a snail out of a hole from the Mountain and knocked it on the stone. To Bilbo it became clear that the keyhole would become visible once the moonlight shone upon it.

He summoned the Dwarves and they waited. Then Thorin unlocked the secret door and an entrance into the Mountain was made. The thrush that had given Bilbo the clue was probably the same thrush that told Bard where to hit Smaug.
20. Bilbo manages to sneak into the Mountain and steal a cup of gold. Smaug wakes up soon after, and is enraged. He flies out and hunts for the thieves but the company takes shelter inside the Mountain. Bilbo later returns and engages in conversation with Smaug. He calls Smaug several names. Which one is not one of them (in the book)?

Answer: Smaug the Magnificent

Bilbo tried to get back into the hall thinking that Smaug slept again. In the last second he saw that Smaug was only pretending to be asleep. Smaug had felt Bilbo's presence although he could not see him (Bilbo wore the Ring). He spoke to Bilbo, and Bilbo was close to coming under a dragonspell. Bilbo gave Smaug more information than he intended but he cannot be blamed since dragons are highly intelligent. Yet Smaug did make a grave error. Bilbo had tricked him into showing him his entire body and Bilbo found a spot on his chest not covered with diamonds and scales.

This was only place where Smaug could be injured. During the conversations Smaug and Bilbo exchanged many titles for each other. More things that Bilbo called Smaug are: 'Smaug the Tremendous', 'Smaug the Mighty' and 'Lord Smaug the Impenetrable'.
21. Smaug attacks Lake-Town after Bilbo escapes. Smaug is defeated by Bard the Bowman, but Lake-Town is destroyed. Word of this reaches the Elven King and he comes to the aid of the Men of the Lake. The ravens at the Lonely Mountain were friends of the Dwarves and they could speak. They observed the events and informed Thorin. The Raven speaking to Thorin was the son of the Chief of the Ravens in Thrór's time. What was the name of this raven's father (who had lived in Thrór's time)?

Answer: Carc

Bard was a descendant of Girion of Dale, who was Dale's Lord when Smaug destroyed it. Bard was the last archer to remain after all others had fled or were killed. When he took out his last arrow, an enchanted black arrow, a thrush came to his ear. He whispered to him Smaug's vulnerable spot, which Bilbo had discovered. Bard slew Smaug but Lake-Town was lost. Word reached the Elven King who came to their aid.

The ravens had observed this and their chief, Roäc, flew to Thorin. Roäc was 153 years old.

He was the son of Carc, who had been Chief of the Ravens in Thrór's time when Smaug descended, 171 years ago. Thorin guessed rightly that the Men and Elves would come to the Mountain and he asked Roäc to send messengers to the Iron Hills, to his cousin Dáin.

In the meantime they barricaded themselves in the Mountain. In the Mountain Bilbo received his famous mithril coat from Thorin.
22. Men and Elves reach the Mountain but are surprised to find the Dwarves alive. They demand a share of the gold in payment for their aid and the destruction of Lake-Town. Thorin refuses and the Mountain gets besieged. But Bilbo had found something very dear to Thorin and he sneaks out in the middle of the night delivering it to Bard to bargain with Thorin. What was this treasure?

Answer: The Arkenstone of Thráin

Thorin had been searching for the Arkenstone of Thráin, which was an incredible jewel and called Heart of the Mountain. It was found in the time of Thráin I (Thorin's father was Thráin II). Bilbo had found it but kept it secret. He feared that things might end badly if Thorin continued to be hardheaded with Bard.

He snuck out in the night and handed it to Bard to use in his negotiation. Bard offered Bilbo to stay with him but Bilbo wanted to return to his friends. The next morning Bard revealed the Arkenstone, and Thorin was enraged. Bilbo confessed that he had given it to Bard. Thorin possibly would have hurt him if Gandalf hadn't appeared with Bard. Thorin cast him out.

The Gems of Girion were treasures Smaug had stolen from Dale. Bard would give them as a gift to the Elvenking once all was over. Thrór's Ring was the last surviving of the 7 Dwarven Rings of power.

He had given it to Thráin II, who eventually became imprisonned in Dol Guldur. There Sauron took it from him and he died.
23. Out of the Iron Hills arrives Dáin II Ironfoot with 500 Dwarven Warriors. Bard does not want to let them pass to the Mountain and barricades the road. Suddenly, Orcs and Wargs appear ready for battle. The Dwarves join the Men and Elves and a battle is about to begin. What was this battle called?

Answer: Battle of the Five Armies

This was the Battle of the Five Armies. Dáin hurried to join the Men of the Lake and the Wood-Elves. Against them stood the Orcs of the Misty Mountains and the Wargs. The Orcs had gathered in strength to avenge their leader, who had been slain by Gandalf.

They were led by Bolg, son of Azog who had come from Moria. Over 150 years ago, Azog had killed Thrór in Moria. This prompted the War between Orcs and Dwarves. The Dwarves eventually came to Moria where the last great battle in that War was fought. Thráin had assembled many Dwarves, from Durin's Folk and others. Chief among his own kin were the Dwarves of the Iron Hills, lead by Náin II. Náin attacked Azog when he came out but Azog broke his neck.

When he tried to flee back into Moria he was slain. Now Azog's son came to avenge his father.

At first the Elves, Dwarves and Men held the Orcs at bay but they were too numerous. Then came Thorin and his companions and once again the tide slightly turned. But Thorin was unable to pierce the ranks of Bolg's bodyguard. Again the tide turned in favour of the Orcs and Thorin fell, pierced with many spears. With him fell his sister-sons, Kíli and Fíli.

Then the Eagles arrived, having spotted the Orcs' gathering. And in the last hour came Beorn, who had grown to giant size. First he carried Thorin's battered body out of the fray and returned in such a wrath that nothing could stop him. He crushed Bolg's bodyguard and eventually Bolg himself. Then the Orcs and Wargs that were left scattered and ran. They were hunted with great slaughter by the victorious army. The Battle of Dale was fought during the War of the Ring. In this battle Dáin and Brand, grandson of Bard, fell.
24. The Men, Elves and Dwarves finally had the victory, but Thorin had been mortally wounded and died after seeing Bilbo one last time, making peace with him. But Smaug was gone and the Dwarves would reclaim Erebor. Dáin II Ironfoot became King under the Mountain.

Answer: True

This is true. Dáin was also of the Royal Line and next in line for being King under the Mountain. His grandfather had been Grór, who was a younger brother of Thrór, Durin's Heir. Thrór's line had failed with the death of Thorin and Fíli and Kíli. Dáin shared the wealth of the Mountain with Bard and the Elves.

The Men were given gold and silver and gems to help them rebuild Lake-Town. Bard would refound Dale and be its Lord, For he was a direct descendant of Girion, last Lord of Dale. Bilbo did not want to be rewarded (the original deal entitled him to 1/14th share) but in the end he accepted a box of gold and one of silver. Thorin was buried deep within the Mountain with the Arkenstone on his breast. On his tomb the Elven King placed Orcrist. Ever it would shine when foes would approach the Mountain.

But Bilbo went home and was accompanied by Gandalf and Beorn also was with him a long time.
25. Bilbo finally returned home. Many years later he was visited by Balin. But Balin came not alone. Who came also with him?

Answer: Gandalf

Balin had grown to like Bilbo a lot during his journey. He travelled to Bag End with Gandalf. He told Bilbo how the Master of Lake-Town had grabbed loads of treasures and fled with them. He starved in the Desolation of Smaug. Balin would later lead an ill-fated attempt to reclaim Moria.

He was killed by Orcs in III, 2994 and was buried as Lord of Moria. Balin had always been my favourite Dwarf and his death was a sad moment. Here ends my quiz on "The Hobbit". I hoped you liked it. Feel free to submit your thoughts or correct me on things that I might have wrong.
