Shuya's strongest subjects were in the humanities, especially literature and English. Yumiko and Yukiko were best friends who had managed to meet up, after the death of Kuninobu led to their names being called next to each other. They discuss ordinary things, like which boys they have a crush on, even in the midst of this game.

If 24 hours go by without the death of a student, every survivor's collar will explode, killing them all. This is one of the differences between the book and the film - in the film the students have a set time limit before the collars explode. Kawada tells this statistic to Shuya and Noriko after they realise that they won't be able to just sit and wait for everyone else to kill each other. Shuya does not understand yet how Kawada knows these details.

Kawada tells Shuya that you sometimes have to stop caring about other people when you love someone. He points out that if Shuya leaves them, Noriko's chance of survival would be drastically decreased. Shuya is really worried for Yukiko and Yumiko, and desperately wants to help them, but he realises that Kawada is right, so he stays.

After Kiriyama killed his gang, and with his victims afterwards, he took any useful weapons they had on them. Mitsura Numai had a Walther PPK gun, which is what Kiriyama used to kill best friends Yumiko and Yukiko as they called to their classmates for help.

Shinji Mimura is the only left handed boy in the class, which is how Yutaka Seto recognised him. Yutaka and Shinji are very close friends, and when Shinji tries to get Yutaka's attention, Yutaka thinks the person who killed Yumiko and Yukiko is now after him. Yutaka swings his weapon (a fork), and Shinji blocks it with a gun in his left hand.

Kawada was in Third Year Class C at Second District, Kobe, when he was in the class chosen for the program. He was the only survivor, and therefore the winner of the game, and as per the rules, he had to move schools and not mention the program. By pure coincidence, Kawada ended up as part of a second class which was chosen.

At the beginning of the book, Sakamochi points out that everyone is as likely to be chosen as everyone else, so his previous participation in the game did not make him exempt.

The game was held in July, and because Kawada had to spend so much time in hospital from his injuries, he ended up having to repeat his third year at the new school. This is how he ended up in another class which was chosen - Kawada calls it "perverted equality".

Kinpatsu Sakamochi is organizing the deaths list before he is interrupted by a phone call from a government official. Sakamochi comments that both Yukiko and Yumiko had their time of death recorded as 8:42 am.

Shinji and Yutaka were talking about which girls they liked, and Shinji couldn't understand why Yutaka was so into Izumi Kanai. He thinks that she was far from ugly, but nowhere near as attractive as Mitsuko, Takako, and Sakura. Yutaka said that Izumi always looked pretty, even when she was tired and upset.

Yoshimi was one of Mitsuko Souma's gang, and had been arrested numerous times for theft, and once for blackmail. She had also dabbled in prostitution, but it isn't clear whether she was arrested for this. Yoshimi insists that she has stopped doing all of these things since she started going out with Yoji, but he doesn't believe her.

Shinji Mimura had told Shuya that the current dictator was in fact the twelfth dictator, and not, as people believed, the 325th. Shogo agrees that this is a possibility, and claims that he doesn't even believe that there is a dictator - that he is just a fictional figurehead for the government.

Shinji's uncle taught him how to hack, and use computers from an early age. Shinji is able to access the Greater East Asia Net - an uncensored version of the area's internet, which contains much government information. Shinji knows that if the government found out about this, he would be looking at a two year stint behind bars.

Hiroki's weapon was a tracking device, which showed where every other student was at any time. He was using it to scour the areas which were about to become forbidden. He knew that there was a corpse in the house in H=8 because the person hadn't moved, even though it was soon to be a forbidden area. Hiroki climbed in through the guest room window to see who the body was.

Shuya mentions Bob Marley later on, when he talks about singers whose lyrics were thought to "agitate the people". All rock music, and any music with provocative lyrics, was banned by the government, in an attempt to keep the population from rebelling.

Yukie wants Kaori to come and join her and her friends in the lighthouse, but Kaori is terrified of everyone, so she just runs away. Kaori starts to slowly lose her mind through fear, and spends the whole game running away from everyone.

Shuya and Kawada are trying to take care of Noriko, who is on the verge of unconsciousness, when Sakamochi's announcement is heard. They are relieved to know that the zone they are in will not become forbidden, so they will not have to risk moving Noriko.

There is an extended fight scene between Takako and Kazushi, after Kazushi threatens to kill Takako if she doesn't join him and sleep with him. Takako has always disliked Kazushi, and she is dismayed that he is the person she happens to run into. She eventually manages to kill him, only to be fatally wounded herself, by Mitsuko Souma.

The three students are heading towards the medical clinic because Noriko's condition is getting worse. Shuya points out that the clinic is north of the residential area, which would be south-east from their current location in C=3.

As Takako is dying, she has flashbacks and hallucinations of her family and friends, and of events from her past. One of her first thoughts is of her younger sister, Ayako, crying as she says goodbye to her. Takako finally dies in the arms of Hiroki Sugimura, her friend who she was in love with, but who loved another girl.

Shuya stumbles across the two girls in a gun fight, and it is apparent that neither of them wanted to fight - they'd just met each other and panicked. While Kaori was distracted by Shuya, Hirono shot Kaori twice - first in the shoulder, and then in the head. Hirono then ran off into the woods, leaving Shuya with Kaori's body.
