Mitsuko was a victim of an extremely high number of sexual attacks as a child, by various people she thought she could trust, and by people who had paid her mother for the priviledge. This is most likely why Mitsuko turned out the way she did - this is explained better in the manga version. Mitsuko knew people would try to take her love from her, so she learnt to offer it first, in the form of prostitution, to keep control of the situation.

At the beginning of the book, while the students are on the bus, Shuya Nanahara notices that Hiroki is once again reading a book on Chinese poetry. This emphasises the fact that he is a sensitive person, even though he is highly trained in martial arts.

In the manga version, he is criticized for using Chinese martial arts techniques as opposed to Japanese techniques, but he soon proves that his skills are superior, regardless of where they came from.

Near the beginning of the book, Mitsuko made Megumi Eto agree to join her by pretending she was scared, but then she killed her as they embraced. Later on, she teamed up with Yuichiro Takiguchi and Tadakatsu Hatagami, when she pretends to be innocent in order to lure them into a false sense of security.

It is possible she was considering joining Yoshimi Yahagi, but events didn't go as she'd hoped and she had to abandon that plan.

Hiroki takes the Colt .45 from Mitsuko Souma during their encounter midway through the game, but the gun originally belonged to Yoshimi Yahagi. Mitsuko had taken it from her. Although Hiroki had the gun, he felt more comfortable using his stick, and only used it when he really had to, when facing Toshinori Oda.

After Kazuo Kiriyama, Mitsuko was the most dangerous student on the island, with seven kills to her name. Mitsuko killed Megumi Eto, Yuichiro Takiguchi, Tadakatsu Hatagami, Kayoko Kotohiki, Takako Chigusa, Yoji Kuramoto, and Yoshimi Yahagi.

Hiroki had a run-in with the bullies when he was at primary school, and they stole his comic book. Takako told him not to cry, and soon became his best friend. A year later, he took up martial arts, and never let anyone make him a victim again. In the manga version, the young Hiroki has an action figure which is a prominent symbol of his friendship with Takako and of his changing from a defenceless child into a highly trained martial arts expert.

Mitsuko has a razor-blade hidden in her underwear, and uses it against Tadakatsu after she seduces him. She comments on how it was once a popular way for prostitutes and girlfriends of Yakuza members to protect themselves, but had gone out of fashion more recently.

Hiroki tells Kayoko about the plan to build two fires and follow the bird calls to meet with Shuya, Noriko, and Shogo. He gives her the lighter so that she can start the fire. Shogo keeps his bird caller because Hiroki needs to follow the sound to him. Mitsuko takes the gun back and nobody takes the tracking device.

Mitsuko versus Kazuo, one of the most anticipated points in the book! Mitsuko was deadly, but she was certainly no match for Kazuo. While Mitsuko was trying to decipher what Hiroki meant about the bird calls and the fires, Kazuo shot her in the back with a burst from the machine gun.

While she had flashbacks of the traumatic times in her life, he shot her again - a burst of four bullets through her chest and face. Mitsuko managed to unload the four remaining bullets in her gun into Kazuo's chest, but of course, he was still wearing the bullet-proof vest, so he survived. Kazuo finally finished Mitsuko off with one last burst from the gun.
