Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Judith's household was all female at the beginning of the book, as her father's job required that he live far away from his family in Cornwall. Where was Mr. Dunbar living?

Answer: Singapore

His family had returned to England from Singapore when little Jess was born. Many British businessmen lived apart from their families during this time period. Singapore remained a colony of Britain until 1855.
2. It was determined that Judith must leave the local comprehensive and begin to attend private school. What led to this decision?

Answer: Mrs. Dunbar must join her husband

Mollie Dunbar was never a very decisive woman. The sheer volume of choices to be made nearly paralyzed her until Judith took control of the situation. In addition, she was extremely nervous to see her husband again after a five-year absence.
3. The Dunbar family employed a female servant in their Cornwall house, who later became a close friend of Judith's. What was her name?

Answer: Phyllis

During the late twenties, a respectable middle-class family was expected to employ a least one servant; a cook-general or maid-of-all-work. Of course, more income meant more servants - at least until World War 2, after which the majority of servants did not return to service.
4. Caught up in a humdrum task, where did Judith first encounter the glamorous Carey-Lewises?

Answer: In the department store

Judith was surprised that Loveday and her mother were having so much fun buying the St. Ursula's uniform, as their own uniform process seemed to be very heavy weather.
5. The Dunbar ladies met an accommodating young man named Jeremy Wells as they shared his compartment on the train. What was his profession?

Answer: Doctor

He was reading an extremely thick and uninteresting looking textbook before the childish antics of Jess and Judith disturbed his reverie. Jeremy Wells was Judith's first crush, and one that endured throughout the book.
6. How much money did Uncle Bob give to Judith at the train station, at the time the Dunbar family was departing?

Answer: Five Pounds

Uncle Bob was no slouch in the gift-giving department! The value of Bob's gift today is around two hundred pounds.
7. Judith's Christmas present from her father finally arrived in February. What had he sent her?

Answer: A cedarwood box

The arrival of the box became the pivotal moment in the friendship between Loveday and Judith, breaking the ice between Judith's painful shyness and Loveday's indifference.
8. Loveday invited Judith for a weekend at her home. What was the name of the Carey-Lewis residence?

Answer: Nancherrow

A company called Portman Productions actually made a sequel to "Coming Home" called "Nancherrow." Netherfield and Coombe Magna are house names I pulled straight from the works of Jane Austen, which is why they may sound familiar.
9. The Carey-Lewis' butler was certainly an imposing and intimidating figure. What was his name?

Answer: Mr. Nettlebed

Judith wondered how anyone ever had the nerve to give him any orders at all! Mr. Nettlebed, though crushingly formal, had a heart of gold.
10. Loveday's nanny was still employed by the Carey-Lewises, tending to the ironing and keeping the upstairs tidy. Upon their arrival, Loveday was greeted most enthusiastically by this woman. What was her name?

Answer: Mary Millyway

Many upper-class British children became closer to their nannies and the other servants than to their own parents. While the strictest separation of children and parents was not apparent at Nancherrow, Loveday's behaviour to both her mother and to Mary is very telling!
11. During the first visit to Loveday's house, Judith was given some clothes so she wouldn't have to wear her school uniform all weekend. What was the first garment she was given?

Answer: A red cashmere sweater

The sweater used to be Athena's - but she had caught the elbow on a fence and snagged it, and had never worn it again. Judith had never owned such a luxurious garment before.
12. During the weekend, Loveday wished to ride her horse, (and, incidentally, meet up with the very attractive farm worker who was to accompany her). What was the name of the horse Loveday rode that day?

Answer: Tinkerbell

Judith didn't care for horses, and would have been a bit adrift, had she not re-encountered Jeremy Wells in the drawing room -he had been a friend of the family his whole life! Everyone seemed delighted that they were acquainted; and they spent the afternoon walking the dogs on the beach.
13. Loveday forgot her manners while asking the butler to get the girls something to drink. After she endured the stares of those around her, and retooled her request, what drink was eventually brought to them?

Answer: Orange Corona

It's a hallmark of poor upbringing for someone to be rude to servants. Loveday's mother was instilling the proper manners in her daughter by requiring her to be polite to the butler.
14. Judith was to stay with Aunt Louise during the school holidays, as her parents were out of the country. What was the name of her Aunt's house?

Answer: Windy Ridge

Loveday, in a fit of naughtiness, once called it "Farty Edge" at the dinner table. SaltAsh was the name of the bridge Jeremy and Judith saw from the train. The Dower House belonged to Mrs. Boscawen. Norland is the name of another house from the works of Jane Austen.
15. What was the name of Aunt Louise's neighbor, who knew her from the India days and had made his home near the golf club just down the street from her?

Answer: Billy Fawcett

He turned out to be quite a dirty old man, really - not a suitable companion for Judith at all! Tommy Mortimer was a friend of the Carey-Lewises. Gus MacKenzie and Arthur Snead are taken from other Rosamunde Pilcher books.
16. What was the name of the "strapping creature" who was head girl at St. Ursula's?

Answer: Deirdre Ledingham

The duties of a "head girl" included meting out small punishments, giving demerits, keeping order, distributing the mail, and basically being the Headmistress' deputy in most things.

Miss Catto, the headmistress was an influential mentor in Judith's life; the firm, decisive mother-figure that Judith had never had.
17. How did Aunt Louise die?

Answer: Car smash

Although Aunt Louise was a notoriously reckless driver, there was no way she could have avoided hitting the broken down farm vehicle that had stalled, out of sight, just over a hill.
18. As her family was in Asia, the death of Aunt Louise left Judith bereft of immediate family in the town. Where did Judith go for school holidays after the death of her aunt?

Answer: The Carey-Lewis house

She became almost a member of the family from this moment on. Athena later referred to Judith as her "surrogate sister." The Carey-Lewises kept the pink bedroom for her and treated her as one of their own children.
19. The Carey-Lewises had a Christmas party to which Judith wore a new dress made out of a sari. What was the color of Judith's new silk dress?

Answer: Kingfisher Blue

Judith was at first unrecognizable to the men when she came downstairs to join them at the party. Her sudden entry into the adult world did not go unnoticed!
20. The family decided to play "Sardines" - a child's game similar to hide-and-seek where the "It" hides, then one by one the rest of the players smash into the hiding place. Where did Judith hide?

Answer: The window-sill

Edward was the first one to find her - by the waft of her perfume. This was where Judith had her first kiss.
