1. Before the story of Gandalf meeting a Balrog at the bridge of Khazad-Dum, what did Tolkien imagine that Gandalf was to confront?

Answer: A black rider

Tolkien first imagined that Gandalf was to confront a Black rider at the bridge, but the outcome of the battle was to be the same as in the final version; both fall into the abyss.
2. When finally the Balrog enters the story, who is it that breaks the bridge so that both fall down, before the final version was decided upon?

Answer: A troll

The troll enters the bridge and as he does the bridge breaks, and both the Balrog and Gandalf fall down. At this stage, the story of Gandalf not falling until the Balrog grabs him with the whip, is absent.
3. What does Branding refer to in the early versions of the story?

Answer: Anduril

At first Anduril, the flame of the west, carried by Aragorn, is named Branding. At this stage, he is also still called Trotter as well as Aragorn. Strider has not yet appeared, but he is no longer a hobbit.

Answer: The Siege of Gondor

Only the Siege of Gondor is present. And it is there said that the siege is broken by Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli and Treebeard!

Answer: Aragorn

In the early drafts, it is said that Boromir went to Saruman for aid so that Boromir could become the ruler of Gondor after his father instead of Aragorn. For this treason he is killed by Aragorn.

Answer: Outside Lothlorien

It takes place outside of Lothlorien. At this stage Boromir is not killed by an orc, but the fellowship is split nonetheless. Aragorn and Boromir go to Minas Tirith andthe two other hobbits' walk comes at last to Fangorn after searching for Frodo and Sam in vain. Legolas and Gimli decide to go home, but on the way they meet Gandalf and travel with him to Minas Tirith.
7. The idea of Saruman taking captives arose early, but who were first imagined to be captured?

Answer: Legolas and Gimli

Before the idea of Merry and Pippin being captured by Saruman, it is Legolas and Gimli who are the captives. Merry and Pippin are at this stage in Fangorn together with Treebeard.

Answer: Sam is to die

In early outlines, it is Sam who takes the ring into Orodruin, and wrestles with Gollum This eventually leads to both of them falling into the volcano, and both die.

Answer: Radagast

Answer: Pippin
