Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who became the King of Dale following the events in "The Hobbit"?

Answer: Bard

Bard's ancestor, Girion, had been Lord of Dale in the past. But with the destructive presence of Smaug the Dragon, Girion was killed and Dale was ruined. Upon Bard's heroic defeat of Smaug, the people of Lake-town clamoured for him to take up rule of Dale again.
He was able to finance the rebuilding of Dale with the fourteenth share of treasure he had received from the dwarves.
2. It was the year 2942 T.A. when Bilbo returned home to the Shire. What other significant event happened in this same year?

Answer: Sauron returned to Mordor

During the events described in "The Hobbit", the White Council had finally decided to attack Sauron's stronghold of Dol Guldur. But they had delayed too long, and Sauron escaped to Mordor. Once there, he quickly rebuilt the tower of Barad-dûr and began preparations for his great war.
3. In the year 2950 T.A., Finduilas, daughter of Adrahil of Dol Amroth was born. Who were her children?

Answer: Boromir and Faramir

Finduilas and Denethor II (later Steward of Gondor) were wed in 2976 T.A. She bore to him Boromir and Faramir, passing on her legacy of elven blood from her ancestor, Nimrodel of Lothlorien. Sadly, she died when Boromir and Faramir were only ten and five years old.
4. Ten years after Bilbo's adventure, Aragorn was twenty years old. Elrond then told him of his royal ancestry, and gave him the ring of Barahir. What else did Elrond give Aragorn at this time?

Answer: the shards of Narsil

Aragorn carried the broken sword Narsil with him for years. When he met the four hobbits in Bree, he showed them the broken blade; but it was soon remade in Rivendell, in the week before the Fellowship departed. It was renamed Andúril, Flame of the West.
5. In 2953 the White Council met for the last time. What lie did Saruman present at this meeting?

Answer: that the One Ring had left Middle Earth

Saruman told the Council that the One Ring had gone down the River Anduin into the sea. He then began spying on Gandalf, noting his interest in the Shire. This is how Saruman came to have agents in Bree, and how he came to have such good pipeweed.
6. Aragorn lived as a Ranger for many years, wandering and fighting against the strength of Sauron. He served valiantly in both Rohan and Gondor, but under a false name. What was the false name?

Answer: Thorongil

"Thorongil" (meaning "Eagle of the Star") did many great deeds during this time, especially in Gondor. He led a fleet to Umbar and destroyed many Corsair ships. He also foresaw the treachery of Saruman, recommending to the Steward, Ecthelion II, to place trust only in Gandalf.

He was disliked only by the Steward's son, Denethor II, who had (perhaps) discovered Thorongil's true identity.
7. After years of wandering and fighting evil, Aragorn returned to Lothlorien, where he met Arwen again. What about Aragorn immediately made a big impression on Arwen this time?

Answer: his clothing

After Aragorn's long journey, Galadriel had given him beautiful elven clothing, a cloak and a jewel to wear upon his brow. Even as he walked toward Arwen, she perceived him to be greater than all his forebears, and reminded her of an elven lord. She instantly fell in love.
8. For years, the dwarves had yearned to reclaim their lost domain of Moria, or Khazad-dûm. Finally in 2989 T.A. Balin led a party there, taking with him two other dwarves of great fame. Who were they?

Answer: Ori and Óin

These three famous dwarves, and many of their kindred, went to Moria about thirty years before the events in "LOTR". They seemed to be successful - at first. At the Council of Elrond, Glóin (Óin's brother) reported that he had, for a while, received encouraging messages from the Moria colony. But within five short years, Balin was killed and Khazad-dûm retaken by evil.
9. During the years between "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings", where was Bilbo's sword, Sting?

Answer: hanging over his fireplace

Tolkien mentioned this in his prologue to "Lord of the Rings". Bilbo wore it in his old scabbard when he left the Shire at age 111. He finally gave it to Frodo when they met again in Rivendell.
10. Saruman had been seeking the One Ring for himself for years, but in the year before Bilbo's famous birthday party, he did something that made him a real traitor. What did he do?

Answer: He used a Palantír

We were not told why Saruman had waited this long to try, but he finally decided to use the Palantír that had been placed in Orthanc long ago. Unfortunately for Saruman, Sauron was holding another Palantír - the one from Minas Ithil - and trapped Saruman with his might. At this point, Saruman truly became a servant of evil.
