Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mr Bilbo Baggins meets this creature in the cave in one of the passes under the Misty Mountains. His original name is not Gollum but Sméagol. How did Sméagol acquire his new name?

Answer: Sméagol gulped often making a noise which sounded like 'Gollum' so he came to be known as Gollum

"He only wept and cried.... with many a Gollum in his throat"
2. Bilbo had adopted his favorite nephew, Frodo, one thing which was common between them was that they shared the same birthday date. Name this date. In 'The Hobbit' Bilbo had done something significant at his birthday, what is this date?

Answer: September 22nd

In 'The Hobbit', Bilbo had rescued the thirteen Dwarves from the jail in the Elven King Thranduil's palace. He had packed the thirteen Dwarves in barrels and let them flow to the river which brought them and Bilbo to Esgaroth. He turned 51 that day when he reached Esgaroth and this was the third time he was useful to the company of the dwarfs; the second time he was useful was when Bilbo rescued the Dwarves from spiders in Mirkwood; the first time was when he helped deal with the trolls.
3. Bilbo had given his sword and dwarf-mail to Frodo before Frodo left in the company of nine from Rivendell to fulfill his quest of destroying the ring of Sauron. What is the name of this sword?

Answer: Sting

Bilbo had used the light from this Elvish sword to find his way about in the dark cave under the Misty Mountains in 'The Hobbit'. He called it 'Sting' after he killed his first spider which tried to weave a web around his body.

Sting had proven useful to Frodo, he had stabbed the feet of an Orc which tried to come inside where he and his companions were in a corner in Moria. This was the same place where Balin and his people were killed before.

"One for the Shire!" cried Aragorn. "The Hobbit's bite is deep! You have a good Blade, Frodo son of Drogo!"
4. In 'The Hobbit', Bilbo had convinced this dwarf to sleep and rest as Bilbo was on this dwarf's behalf willing to watch over The Lonely Mountain dwelling of the Dwarves for that night. This gave Bilbo the opportunity to go over to the Elven camp and talk things over with Bard and Thranduil about a deal. What is the name of this Dwarf? He had a feature which inconvenienced his other Dwarf friends.

Answer: Bombur

Bombur became so fat in 'The Lord Of The Rings' at the time of Frodo's adventure that he could not move himself from his couch to his chair at the table, and it took six young Dwarves to lift him. In the time of 'The Hobbit' he was so fat that it made traveling with him an inconvenience.

In 'The Hobbit' the part where Bilbo talks and negotiates with Bard is very interesting where Bard and the elven king are surprised by Bilbo's good nature in wanting to prevent fight between the dwarfs and the elves.Bilbo was willing to bargain peace giving Arkenstone, a jewel so magnificent that Thorin coveted it.

Bilbo had told Bard that he can take the Arkenstone and demand Thorin to give Bard his share of treasure. This told so much about Bilbo, cute as he might have been, he delighted in peace, friendship and goodwill, so much that for peace he was willing not only to forgo the Arkenstone which was in his procession but also willing to risk consequences of his act of goodwill in surrendering to the Elven and Bard side the Arkenstone.

Thranduil, the wood elven king had said that Bilbo was more worthy to be a king then many elven kings, for his generosity and humble tact and offered Bilbo to stay with them where he would be treated with honour, however
Bilbo declined the offer for he wanted to be by the side of his dwarf friends with whom he stayed his adventure.

Thorin got very angry with this nice kind harmless hobbit when he found out the nextday about Bilbo's
role and declared that Bilbo was not going to get his promised share of treasure for his services with the company of the dwarfs. Thorin repented for this when he was on his deathbed and apologized to Bilbo telling that if more forks were like Bilbo who liked food, cheer and not war and jewels the world would be a better place. Bilbo had cried for the death of Thorin.

This tells a lot about the good nature of hobbits, who were like Bilbo and no wonder this hobbit was liked by everyone and had all kinds of friends wizards, men, elves , dwarfs and a fan following of hobbit nephews, who were so fond of Bilbo. It is very nice reading and living in the hobbits' world, their charm of
cheer never ceases.
5. Gimli, Elf-friend, the good friend of Legolas the Elf was one of the nine companions of Frodo in the 'Fellowship Of The Ring'. He is a descendant of one of the dwarfs who was one among the company of thirteen Dwarves who accompanied Bilbo in his adventures in 'The Hobbit'. What is the name of this Dwarf who is the father of Gimli?

Answer: Gloin

Bilbo was a very dear lovable hobbit both in 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord Of The Rings', everyone was fond of him(if we exclude Sackville-Bagginses).It was due to this friendship that Gloin came to Rivendell instead of revealing Bilbo's place and ring to the Black Rider who had come to the Lonely Mountain and blackmailed Dain "king under mountain" and king of Dale Brand to give information he sought about Bilbo.

Gloin came to warn Bilbo that Black Riders were after him and wanted advise of Elrond on what to do the next time the Black Rider comes seeking their information about Bilbo.
6. Bilbo had left his relatives some gifts before he left his Bag End home in 'The Lord Of The Rings'. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins was gifted a case of ___________. She was however not happy because she wanted Bag End which was left to Frodo by Bilbo when he made Frodo his heir. Fill in the blank.

Answer: Silver spoons

When Bilbo had returned to his home after his adventures in 'The Hobbit', he found that his house was put on sale by Sackville-Bagginses, who assumed very conveniently that Bilbo Baggins was dead for he was away and absent for a year from his Bag End home.

Bilbo had found that some of his silver spoons were missing and knew that Lobelia had stolen them, so when he left Bag End, he left her a gift of packed silver spoons.
7. Frodo and Pippin had the following argument about the route they must pursue to reach Bucklebury Ferry, as quickly as possible. '"Short cuts make long delays," argued Pippin. "Shortcuts make delays but inns make longer ones."' Which inn is alluded to here?

Answer: Golden Perch

Golden Perch seemed to have had the best beer in Eastfarthing. Pippin wanted to take the road to Stock for halting at Golden Perch but Frodo decided against it suggesting a route which would take them to woods and fields to the bridge from where they could reach the Bucklebury Ferry.
8. Pippin was the youngest of the hobbits, there have been certain silly things done by him which have caused tension to his friends. Which one of these did he not do in the story?

Answer: Singing in Bree about the inn and beer and the man in the moon.

This was Gandalf's response when he found that Pippin had been responsible for the noise which was of the stone that Pippin had dropped in the well hole,
"'Fool of a Took!' he growled. 'This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance.'"

Pippin had not yet reached the adult age of a hobbit which was 33 years, he was in his tweens, but was a very cheerful hobbit capable of doing many useful things as was done by him in many instances in 'The Lord Of The Rings'.

The singing in Bree about the inn and beer and the man in the moon was done by Frodo because he wanted to distract the audience from Pippin who was getting very excited and free in his narration that unintentionally he was in danger of mentioning about Frodo's ring. Frodo's song became a hit with the people when he sang it.
9. Sam was Frodo's companion who accompanied Frodo to the depths of Mount Doom where Frodo ventured to destroy the Ring of Power. Sam mentioned a lot of sayings of his father, the 'Old Gaffer', which provides for the light entertainment of the readers. What is the name of Sam's father?

Answer: Hamfast

"When ever you open your big mouth you put your foot in it" is one such saying Gaffer had told Sam.
Samwise Gamgee was a very wise, kind, funny hobbit with a pinch of sweet innocence and he gave Frodo happiness and care throughout the story.

When Frodo tried to go to his doom alone to Mordor in boat, Sam had risked his life trying to catch Frodo as invisible Frodo drew away his boat to go across the river. Sam tried to catch the boat and fell into the water. Frodo had to come back to pull out Sam and save him from drowning in the water.

This was what Frodo told Sam, "Of all the confounded nuisances you are the worst, Sam!". There followed an argument between both where Sam wanted to accompany Frodo on the journey to Mordor and Frodo did not, "It will be the death of you to come with me, Sam".

However finally, Sam won the argument saying that "I'm coming too, or neither of us isn't going. I'll knock holes in all the boats first."
This actually made Frodo laugh and he took Sam with him on his journey. Without Sam, Frodo could not have completed his journey and his quest in reaching Mount Doom to destroy the ring.
10. Poor Lobelia in the end of "Lord of the Rings" gives back Bag End to Frodo when she found that her son Lotho was killed there by Grima. She however earned honor and respect of the hobbits of Shire for the nerve she showed trying to hit a ruffian twice her size with her umbrella. What was her maiden name?

Answer: Bracegirdle

Lobelia was disliked by Bilbo and Frodo but in the end she changes to an old hobbit who was no longer jealous of Bilbo or Frodo. This is probably due to all the evil things she had gone through when Shire was taken over by Saruman and tormented by the ruffians. She was jailed having a miserable time this period.
