Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One Ring. "...for he made [the One Ring] himself, it is his, and he let a great part of his own former power pass into it, so that he could rule all the others." In Sauron's former life in the Undying Lands, whom did he serve before he became Melkor's servant?

Answer: Aule

One! One Ring of Sauron. Ahh-ahh-ahh! As the Count from Sesame Street would say.

Unlike the Istari, who took on different names and identities after arriving in Middle Earth, Sauron retained his name from the Undying Lands, although he had many disguises.
2. Two Trees of Valinor. Besides being captured in the Silmarils, the light of the Trees were also preserved in the Moon and Sun. What are these lights called in Quenya, and who tended them?

Answer: Isil, Tilion; Anar, Arien

Their names in Sindarin are Ithil and Anor. Laurelin and Telperion are the Two Trees, Illuin and Ormal the Two Lamps. Namo and Irmo are the Featuri, the "spirit-masters" of the Undying Lands (Mandos) and Lorien, respectively. Galathilion and Nimloth are ancestors of the sapling found by Aragorn after he reunites the Northern and Southern Kingdoms.
3. Three Trolls. What type of trolls were Bert, William, and Tom, from Bilbo's adventures?

Answer: stone-trolls

The three types of Trolls are the stone, cave, and hill. Uruk-hai were a race of half-breeds bred by both Sauron and Saruman in the Third Age.
4. Four Hobbits. As in the case of the Three Musketeers being four, the Four Hobbits had a fifth companion, Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger (not Lumpkin!). During the tyranny of Sharkey, he unsuccessfully led a band of rebels and was imprisoned in the Lockholes of Michel Delving. Which of his fellow inmates was imprisoned the longest?

Answer: Will Whitfoot

Will Whitfoot was the Mayor of Michel Delving and the first to be put in prison by Sharkey's Men. Hugo Bracegirdle and Milo Burrows each received a gift from Bilbo after his 111st Birthday celebration and sudden disappearance.
5. Five Istari chiefs (that are mentioned by name). Which of the Istari was (were) sent by Yavanna?

Answer: Aiwendil

Aiwendil became known as Radagast the Brown in Middle Earth. Curumo (Saruman) was chosen by Aule, Alatar and Pallando (the two Blue Wizards) by Orome, and Olorin (Gandalf) by Manwe. "Wizard" in Sindarin is "ithron."
6. Six Days of the Elven Week. Which day starts the week?

Answer: Elenya

Elenya is the Quenya name, Orgilion the Sindarin, and Sterrendei the Hobbitish. Otherwise known as Saturday.
7. Seven Palantiri. Which one was taken into the Undying Lands?

Answer: Elostirion

There were four still in existence during the War of the Ring: those of Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul), Minas Anor (Minas Tirith), Orthanc, and Elostirion (although it was already in the Undying Lands).
8. Eighth of March, TA 3019. Paths of the Dead. What stone was in the gold belt of the Door-Keeper of the Paths, who told King Brego of Rohan and his son Baldor, "The way is shut."?

Answer: garnets

It was Elrohir who brought word from Elrond to Aragorn, "The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the Paths of the Dead." It was also Elrohir who gave Aragorn the silver horn to summon the dead to the Stone of Erech. Elladan is the one who replied to Legolas, "Yes, the Dead ride behind. They have been summoned."
9. Nine Nazgul. Approximately how old was the Lord of the Nazgul when Eowyn and Merry slew him?

Answer: 4860

Definitely older than the combined ages of the Four Hobbits. "675" is the approximate number of years he reigned as the Witch-king of Angmar. "2931" of the TA is the year of Aragorn's birth. "1000" of the TA is the approximate year that the Istari arrive in Middle Earth.
10. Ten o'clock in the morning, on October 24th, TA 3018, in Imladris. If you want to know. What year was Imladris founded by Elrond?

Answer: SA 1697

Elrond founded Imladris with the remnant of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain (the jewel-smiths) Gildor, Glorfindel, and others of the Eldar. Besides "Rivendell," Imladris was also known as Karningul in the Westron speech.
11. Elvensies. Hobbits love multiple meals during the course of the day and try to have up to six, when they can. During Frodo's meal with Faramir in Henneth Annun, which of the following edibles was not present?

Answer: berries

The meal consisted of yellow wine, bread, butter, salted meats, dried fruits, and red cheese. Ripe berries are specifically mentioned on the plentiful list of items at Tom Bombadil's table.
12. Twelve Dwarf Companions of Thorin Oakenshield. Which of the dwarves were not of the royal line of Durin's House?

Answer: Bifur, Bofur, Bombur

On the Twelfth Day in Gondor, my true-love gave to me...(oops).

Dori, Nori, and Ori are remote kinsmen; Oin and Gloin are 3rd cousins; Kili and Fili are Thorin's nephews, sister-sons.
13. Thirteen days between the breaking of the Fellowship and Denethor's meeting with Gandalf and Pippin. "Thirteen, thirteen days. Yes, I think that would be so. Yes, I stood beside him, as he blew the horn. But no help came. Only more orcs." How many Stewards of Gondor inherited the horn from their father?

Answer: 27

The horn was passed down from Vorondil the Hunter, father of Mardil, the first Ruling Steward of Gondor, through 27 generations to Denethor II, last Ruling Steward. Boromir, who inherited the horn from Denethor II, never became Steward.
14. Bonus 1. Back to the Twelve Dwarf Companions of Thorin Oakenshield. Who were the first to appear on Bilbo's doorstep, and, the last to be introduced?

Answer: Dwalin and Thorin

"'Dwalin at your service!' he cried to the astonished Bilbo." Incidentally, seven of the twelve were still alive during the War of the Ring.
15. Bonus 2. Which of the following suspected that Thorongil was Isildur's Heir?

Answer: Denethor

It is probably one of the reasons why Denethor held such a grudge against Aragorn when he heard from Pippin that there was a man of high honour among the Fellowship and that he had a famous sword.

Not a true Baker's Dozen due to the set-up of FunTrivia quizzes, but hope you enjoyed it! As always, mistakes are my own.
