Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lets start out with some general information; which of the three breeds of hobbit were orginally larger and heavier in build?

Answer: Stoors

The Stoors were orginally from the upper regions above the River Anduin and they were the last of the breeds to leave the highlands to eventually settle in the Dunland area during the 14th century.
2. To continue the with general descriptions, which of the breeds of hobbits were considered the most "normal"?

Answer: Harfoots

The Harfoots are by far the most numerous of the breeds and prefer mostly to stay in one place rather than to travel.
3. And again with general descriptions, which of the breeds were mostly fair haired and fair skinned?

Answer: Fallohides

Not only were the Fallohides fairer in appearance they also were the most friendly, for they often visited with the elves. This was considered highly unusual by the other hobbits.
4. Which of the breeds did not originally possess hairy feet?

Answer: None of these

I mean come on, they're Hobbits! Wee little fellows with hairy feet. Seriously that was a given right.
5. Now we all know that for "most" hobbits the ideal living quarters is in a burrow or a smial under a hill, but which of the breeds was credited with holding this tradition the longest?

Answer: Harfoots

Most of the Shire hobbits are Harfoots, which is why you see mostly hobbits holes in the Shire and houses in Bree.
6. Which of the breeds did the small branch of hobbits who lived near the Gladden Fields, and also was the family to which Smeagol belonged, come from?

Answer: Stoors

Most of this clan of hobbits, and Smeagol (or orginally Trahald), made their living by fishing in the nearby Anduin River.
7. Now let's move on from questions concerning the breeds of hobbits and onto just some ordinary hobbit facts. What do hobbits call any item that has little or no use but that they are reluctant to throw away?

Answer: mathom

In Michel Delving there is the Mathom-house where there is a huge collection of "mathoms". Actually, at one time Bilbo's coat of mithril rings resided there.
8. In what year of the Third Age did Marcho and Blanco cross the Baraduin River and found the Shire?

Answer: 1601

Marcho and Blanco were actually of the Fallohide strain, which is strange because most of the Shire hobbits are Harfoots as I already said.
9. Now lets talk about my favorite Hobbit, Sam. What was the name of Sam's younger sister who evetually wedded the brother of Rosie Cotton, Tom?

Answer: Marigold

Samwise was the youngest of three sons. But unlike his other two brothers Sam was the only one to follow in his father, Hamfast's, footsteps to become a gardener.
10. And lets finish off with another one about Samwise the Stouthearted. How many times was Sam elected mayor of the Shire?

Answer: 7

On September 22, when he was 102 years old, Sam rode to the Grey Havens to be the last of the ring-bearers to leave Middle-earth.
