Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Foul dwimmerlaik". This was said by an unhorsed soldier during a battle. Who was the soldier speaking to?

Answer: Witch King of Angmar

(ROTK, "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields")

Dernhelm (Eowyn) said this to the Witch King (the chief Ring-wraith) after he and his steed swooped down upon Snowmane and Theoden, who had fallen on the Pelennor Fields. His steed had just dug its claws into Snowmane and Dernhelm stood alone to defend the fallen. As Dernhelm spoke and fought the beast, Merry realized who she was.
2. Someone was called a "dunghill rat" and ordered to be quiet. Who was in trouble for making noise?

Answer: Frodo

(ROTK, "The Tower of Cirith Ungol")

In the tower of Cirith Ungol, Sam was looking for Frodo and began to sing. Frodo faintly sang back but attracted the attention of Snaga the orc. "Ho la! You up there, you dunghill rat! Stop your squeaking, or I'll come and deal with you."
3. Here's one of my favorites, although it's probably more a term of endearment: who was called a "wooly-footed slowcoach"?

Answer: Nob

(FOTR, "At the Sign of the Prancing Pony")

Nob is a servant at the Prancing Pony. Barliman Butterbur calls to him to help the travellers at the beginning of their quest. And when the hobbits and Gandalf pass through Bree after the quest is ended, Butterbur is still calling Nob a slowcoach, as well as a "wooly-pated ninny" for not recognizing the important travellers.
4. Who was angrily referred to as "the murderous rogue!" after something was thrown from a tower?

Answer: Saruman

(TTT, "The Voice of Saruman")

This happened at the foot of Orthanc, at Gandalf's "farewell visit" to Saruman, who was now trapped inside under the Ents' watchful guard. Right after Gandalf broke Saruman's staff, Saruman crawled inside and the Palantķr was thrown from above almost hitting Gandalf in the head. Eomer assumed Saruman had thrown it, and cried "the murderous rogue!" but Gandalf believed Wormtongue had thrown it.
5. Who did Gandalf call "a witless worm"?

Answer: Grķma Wormtongue

(TTT, "The King of the Golden Hall")

This should be an easy one, since it was also used in the movie. In the Golden Hall, Gandalf and the Three hunters come before Theoden but Grķma only whines about how little help Gandalf has brought: "three ragged wanderers, and you yourself the most beggar-like of the four!" Then he insults Galadriel and her power. Gandalf reveals his white raiment (after a little song) and chides Grķma.
6. Who called himself a "miserable sluggard" in order to overcome his fear and move ahead?

Answer: Sam

(ROTK, "The Tower of Cirith Ungol")

Sam called himself this, to up his courage in the Tower of Cirith Ungol. He finally moved forward to enter the gate, but was stopped by the power of the Watchers. He was only able to enter by holding up the phial of Galadriel, though his presence was still detected.
7. "He looks more than half like a goblin." Who is this said of? (Hint: Though referenced more than once, this person never has dialogue in the book.)

Answer: the squint-eyed southerner

(FOTR, "A Knife in the Dark")

As Strider and the hobbits were leaving Bree, many curious onlookers lined their path out of town. Frodo saw the squint-eyed southerner peeping out of a window in the last house, and noticed his orc-like appearance. Bill Ferny was standing behind the hedge jeering the travellers, and got an apple in the face from Sam.
8. After being called an "old hagling", this character impresses everyone with her courage. Who is she?

Answer: Lobelia Sackville-Baggins

(ROTK, "The Scouring of the Shire")

Sharkey's ruffians had an easy time intimidating the hobbits, except for Lobelia, who "showed more spirit than most". Upon being bullied by some ruffians, who gave her the said insult, she went after them with her trusty umbrella! I thought it would be fun to put Galadriel as one of the choices since she is possibly the oldest female in Middle Earth. :)
9. "Curse you, you filthy little vermin!" To what/whom was this spoken, by the eaves of Fangorn Forest?

Answer: Merry and Pippin

(TTT, "The Uruk-Hai")

This is what Grishnįkh calls Merry and Pippin in his frustration. Merry and Pippin were prisoners of the Uruk-hai, en route to Isengard. They had stopped for a rest and while the Isengard orcs were away for a moment, Grishnįkh was tormenting them, led by Pippin to believe they might have the Ring. He ended up saving them from the battle with the Rohirrim, carrying them far enough away to avoid accidentally being killed in the battle.
10. The last one is a bit tough, and from the appendices. "You have grown big since you were last here; but it is mostly fat, I guess." This insult was given in response to a proposal of marriage! To whom was this said?

Answer: Freca

(Appendix A) This was said to Freca, by Helm. Freca was a powerful landowner, claiming royal blood, who proposed to Helm that his son, Wulf, might marry Helm's daughter. Helm was insulted by Freca's presumption and, after a brief argument, punched Freca so hard that he died. Thus he acquired the name Helm Hammerhand.
