Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of "The Fellowship of the Ring", Bilbo decides to leave the shire and go live with the elves. Before he goes, however, he leaves behind a few gifts for some of his friends and relatives. What does he leave behind for his aunt, Dora Baggins?

Answer: A waste paper basket

Bilbo leaves her a waste paper basket, with the attatched note "For Dora Baggins, in memory of a long correspondence, with love from Bilbo." The silver spoon he gave to his relative Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, the pen and ink to Milo Burrows (he never answered letters) and the mirror to his niece Angelica.
2. What, according to Strider, is the old name for Weathertop hill?

Answer: Amon Sul

On Amon Sul a tower was built for defense against the dark realm of Angmar. Minas Anor and Ithil (Tower of the Setting Sun and Tower of the Rising Moon) are the names of cities in Gondor which were eventually renamed Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul.
3. In Moria, the fellowship find a historical document nearby Balin's tomb in the Chamber of Mazarbul. According to the book of Mazarbul, on what day of what month was Balin, lord of Moria, slain?

Answer: November tenth

Balin was slain by an orc arrow when he had gone to look in the Mirrormere, a pool outside of Moria. He had not been lord of Moria for five years when it happened.
4. In which season do the fellowship enter the woods of Lothlorien?

Answer: Winter

Legolas laments that they arrive in Lothlorien in the winter rather than in the spring. The leaves of the mallorns of Lothlorien do not fall out in the fall as do those of other trees, but instead change to a golden color. In the springtime they fall out and carpet the forest floor with gold, and golden flowers bloom in place of the old leaves.
5. What name does Eomer of the Riddermark endow upon Aragorn when they meet in the beginning of "The Two Towers"?

Answer: Wingfoot

Eomer is in awe when he learns the speed at which Aragorn and company have been chasing the orcs. On foot they traveled forty-five leagues in four days.
6. Heh,heh. Time for a couple hard ones. What number of steps are there leading up to the door of Orthanc? (the tower in Isengard)

Answer: 27

There are exactly 27 broad, black steps leading up to Orthanc. This is revealed in chapter ten of "The Two Towers", "The Voice of Saruman". In this chapter Gandalf comes to Isengard to talk to Saruman, and the company get their first glance at the palantir when Grima Wormtongue throws it at them.
7. In Ithilien, Faramir is quite taken aback when he and his men encounter Frodo and Sam, back to back, clutching swords. They soon find that the hobbits are friends, but just to be sure Faramir leaves two men to guard them while he is away on other business. What are the names of these men?

Answer: Mablung and Damrod

Mablung and Damrod are, by Frodo's reckoning, two of the Dunedan of Westernesse. Haldir and Thranduil are elves (Thranduil is Legolas' father), Beregond is captain of the guard at Minas Tirith, and Hasufel is a horse.
8. Who is Ghan-Buri-Ghan, and what aid does he contribute to the battle of Pelennor Fields?

Answer: Leader of the Wild men who helps the Riddermark reach Pelennor Fields

Ghan-Buri-Ghan, leader of the wild men, leads Theoden and his army safely to Minas Tirith through long forgotten paths in the mountains.
9. What three tokens are presented to Gandalf at the Black Gate, making everyone believe that Frodo is dead?

Answer: A coat of mithril mail, and elven cloak, and a blade of Westernesse

Upon seeing Frodo's mithril shirt and his cloak from Lothlorien, and Sam's sword, Gandalf, Aragorn and Pippin believe the two hobbits to be dead. Thus they fight what they believe to be their final battle at Morannon, the black gate of Mordor.
10. When Merry, Frodo, Sam and Pippin arrive back at the shire they find that an individual named "Sharkey" has been fast at work ruining their beloved land. Sharkey is derived from the orcish "sharku"; what does it mean?

Answer: Old man

Saruman, after losing his powers, decided to turn his sights on the Shire, tearing out trees and overunning it with ruffians. The hobbits had to fight for it back, but eventually the ruffians were driven out and the land was restored. It's funny, though, out of all the hobbits Sam was the only one who was mostly unchanged by the whole journey. Merry and Pippin came back to the Shire as great leaders and warriors, Frodo came back a very wise and even more troubled hobbit, but Samwise Gamgee still wanted to be just a simple gardener.
