Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What medieval play is this from? "O Good Deeds, I stand in fear! I must you pray of counsel, For help should come right well."

Answer: Everyman

Performances of 'Everyman' date from 1495, and it is still widely performed today.
2. Which Shakespeare? "Yet so far hath discretion fought with nature That we with wisest sorrow think on him, Together with remembrance of ourselves"

Answer: Hamlet

Spoken by the King in Act One, Scene Two shortly before Hamlet's return to Denmark.
3. Which character in Shakespeare's 'Othello' spoke these lines? "Yes, a dozen; and as many to th' vantage as Would store the world they played for. But I do think it is their husbands' fault If wives do fall."

Answer: Emilia

This is spoken to the innocent Desdemona by the scheming Emilia. The use of the word store actually means 'populate' in this particular line. The teen movie 'O' is an excellent adaptation of this classic, however, for the purist I recommend the Kenneth Branagh/ Lawrence Fishburne version
4. Which Comedy of Manners contains this line? "I choose, Sir, to be chosen; and in fine, The friend of mankind is no friend of mine."

Answer: The Misanthrope

Spoken by Alceste. This very French play is composed of rhymed couplets, making it fun to read and easy to memorize!
5. Which Henrik Ibsen play does this come from? "Oh, now she's fooling with those pistols again."

Answer: Hedda Gabler

Said by Tesman at the sound of a shot. In fact, Hedda has actually just shot herself. One of Henrik Ibsen's most popular realism plays. "A Doll's House" is the most popular, and "Ghosts" is an example of his turning more toward Symbolism later in his career. "Six Characters in Search of an Author" was written by Pirandello.
6. Name the play this quote appears in: "I want to live in a decent house. I don't want to be dirtied in my old age."

Answer: The House of Bernada Alba

9. Name the Greek comedy: "The Commission has arrived from Sparta. How oddly they're walking!"

Answer: Lysistrata

Written by Aristophanes, Lysistrata is the story of women who gather and withold sex from their soldier husbands until a peace treaty is signed. Wildly hilarious, this Greek comedy is still peformed quite frequently.
