Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This series is mainly about the lives of two Californian twins, Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield.

Answer: All of these

Elizabeth and Jessica are identical twins. They also have a brother Steven, two years older than them, and their parents are Ned and Alice (in the "Sweet Valley High" and "Sweet Valley University" books, Alice is sometimes mistaken for being their sister).

These series were created by Francine Pascal, and are set in Sweet Valley, California. She has also created the series "Sweet Valley Kids", "Sweet Valley Senior Year", "The Unicorn Club", and "Elizabeth". They follow the twins' lives throughout school and college.

In the TV series "Sweet Valley High", Brittany and Cynthia Daniel play the twins. Brittany was also in 2001's "Joe Dirt" with David Spade from the TV series "Just Shoot Me".
2. This series is about a group of baby-sitters from Connecticut. Throughout the series there's an average of seven baby-sitters involved.

Answer: The Baby-sitters Club

These are written by Ann M. Martin. From the beginning to the end of the series there are the following characters: Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, Stacey, Dawn, Mallory, Jessi, Shannon, Logan, and Abby. Martin has also written the series of "Baby-sitters Little Sister", "The Kids In Ms Colman's Class", and "Baby-sitters Friends Forever".

There was a movie made called "The Baby-sitters Club", it starred the young Rachael Leigh Cook, Larisa Oleynik, and Sissy Spacek's daughter. Claudia likes to read "Nancy Drew" books, and "The Secret Seven" is written by Enid Blyton, "Teen Power Inc." by Emily Rodda.
3. A series of books based on a TV series is "___ the Vampire Slayer".

Answer: Buffy

The TV show stars Sarah Michelle Gellar. Some of the books in the series have more outlandish storylines, ones that would have cost a lot of money to film, so they just wrote a book about it instead. Plus it gave the chance for Buffy fans to have a more suspenseful read because they did not know the ending.

There are also "Angel" books, based on the spin-off series starring David Boreanaz. In the early 1990s there was a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" full-length movie, starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry. Seth Green (Oz in the series) was the only cast member to act in both the movie and TV show (although Joss Whedon created both). Swanson was considered a 'one-movie wonder' until she resurfaced in 2000's "Dude Where's My Car?" with Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott. Alyson Hannigan (Willow from the TV series) also starred with Scott in the "American Pie" movies.
4. True or False : A book about an Italian-Australian teenager girl's search for her self-identity is called "Looking For Andretti".

Answer: False

The book is actually called "Looking For Alibrandi", a wonderful book, Melina Marchetta's first novel. The main character's name is Josephine (Josie) Alibrandi - 'I am Christina and Michael (Andretti)'s daughter... Katia's granddaughter... who never was an Alibrandi and should have been a Sandford'.

The book details her last year of high school (Year 12) at an inner Sydney school. It is actually 'the most stolen library book in Australia'. In 2000 it was made into a movie, starring Pia Miranda, Kick Gurry, Great Scacci, Anthony La Paglia and Matthew Newton (TV show host Bert Newton's son). Matthew was also in the 2002 end-of-high-school movie "Blurred".
5. This book is about a boy and his friend causing a lot of mischief. In one part they fake their own deaths.

Answer: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Tom Sawyer is friends with Huckleberry Finn, and those two books were written by Mark Twain (whose real name was Samuel Clemens). "In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", the two boys get into a lot of trouble, peaking at faking their deaths, and attending their own funerals. Huck helps Tom win the heart of Becky earlier on, by getting him tickets so he can win a bible at Sunday School and appear to know his bible verses really well. "In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", Huck travels with runaway slave Jim down the Mississippi River, in search of Jim's emancipation. "Boy, Tales of Childhood" and "Danny, the Champion of the World" are both creations of Welshman Roald Dahl.
6. In this book, a boy named Danny goes pheasant hunting with his father.

Answer: Danny, the Champion of the World

Written by Welshman Roald Dahl. Danny drops out of school to help his father make money and comes up with a brilliant scheme involving sleeping pills and raisins. Dahl also wrote "Boy, Tales of Childhood" and "Going Solo". Stephen King wrote "The Shining", about a boy named Danny who has psychic abilities.
7. This set of books is about a group of hobbits and their quest to destroy the One Ring.

Answer: The Lord of the Rings

"The Lord of the Rings" was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, and the three volumes of books are "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King", and "The Lord of the Rings" is considered to be the best book from the 20th century.

He also wrote "The Hobbit", in which Bilbo Baggins unknowingly steals the One Ring off the creature Gollum (I have made a quiz on this riddles section of "The Hobbit". "The Lord of the Rings" comes after "The Hobbit", and Bilbo's nephew Frodo (played by Elijah Wood in the movie) journeys to Mount Doom in Mordor to destroy the One Ring.

The poem says: 'Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne, In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.' The "Harry Potter" series is written by J.K. Rowling.
8. This series is about adolescent witches and wizards.

Answer: Harry Potter

Written by J.K. Rowling, the first book in a proposed 7-book series is called "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". In some countries it is called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". The main character is of course Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe in the movies), and he has his wizard and witch friends Ron and Hermione. Together they struggle through their years at 'Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry', fighting against evil forces such as their classmate Draco, and 'He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named' ('Tom Marvolo Riddle a.k.a. I Am Lord Voldemort' as we learn in the second book, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"). "The Famous Five" is written by Enid Blyton, and "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" books are based on the TV show starring Melissa Joan Hart, and is about witches and WARLOCKS, not WIZARDS, as are the "Charmed" books (as well as the fact that in "Charmed" they are not teenagers).
9. True or False : R.L. Stine wrote the series of "Goosebumps".

Answer: True

He also wrote the series of "Goosebumps 2000" and "Fear Street", as well as many other thriller novels for teenagers. The first book of the "Goosebumps" series is "Welcome to Dead House". It has also been made into a television show, by the Nickelodeon company (seen on Foxtel in Australia).

Some of the more popular books include "The Night of the Living Dummy" and its sequels, the "Monster Blood" trilogy, and also "The Haunted Mask" (parts I and II). Of his independent thrillers, "The Baby-sitter" has parts I through V and "Beach House" is his longest and most in depth.

The "Goosebumps 2000" books have 'bigger, better scares'.
10. Of the following, which series is written by Emily Rodda, and stars 6 young detectives and one of their dogs?

Answer: Teen Power Inc.

An Australian series, the stars of these books are Liz, Sunny, Richelle, Tom, Elmo, and Nick. Liz's dog sometimes follows the gang around. They run an odd-jobs service known as "Teen Power Inc.", and are forever getting involved in mysteries. The first book in the series is "The Ghost of Raven Hill", and I've also written a whole quiz on the tenth book, "Poison Pen". Emily Rodda has also written the series "Deltora Quest" and the best-sellers "The Time Keeper", "The Best-Kept Secret" and "Finders Keepers". "The Secret Seven" and "The Famous Five" are both series by Enid Blyton, and "Nancy Drew" obviously stars just plain old Nancy (not 6 people). "The Famous Five" is actually 4 people and a dog, though. According to my brother, "Teen Power Inc". is no good because it is the only thing in this quiz that has not been made into a movie or TV show. That's why he doesn't read books, he waits for the movie or TV show if it is any good.
