Bilbo met Gandalf on a Tuesday in front of Bag End. Flustered with the Gandalf's offer of an adventure, Bilbo 'politely' asks the wizard to come to tea the next day.
2. What kind of jewelry did Gandalf give the Old Took?

Answer: Pair of magic diamond studs

Gandalf presented the Old Took with a pair of magic diamond studs that fastened themselves and never came undone until ordered.
3. What color is Bilbo's front door?

Bilbo's front door was green with a brass handle in the middle. It was newly-painted a week before the arrival of Gandalf to Bilbo's front door.
4. What was different about Thorin's hood from the other dwarves'?

Answer: It had a silver tassel

Thorin Oakenshield was an important dwarf, being the rightful King under the Mountain. The silver tassel on his hood showed this status.
5. What are shields used for in the Shire?

Answer: Cradles

Shields, according to Gandalf, were mostly used as cradles or dish-covers. The hobbits had no use for such things, being a peaceful race.
6. Who killed Thror, Thorin's Grandfather?

Answer: Azog the Goblin

Thror was killed in Moria by Azog the Goblin. Azog, in turn, was killed by Dain Ironfoot. Azog's son, Bolg, was killed in the Battle of Five Armies by Beorn.
7. What month was it when Bilbo first met the dwarves and consequently set off on the Quest for Erebor?

Answer: April

Bilbo met Thorin and co. and Gandalf on the month of April. Bilbo leaves Bag End without pocket-handkerchief, hat, money, or walking stick on the same month.
8. Bilbo, Thorin and co., and Gandalf set out from the Shire on horses. What is the color of Gandalf's horse?

Answer: White

Gandalf seemed to have a penchant for white horses, as you see later on in "LOTR". Another horse that Gandalf borrows later in the book from Elrond in Rivendell is also white.
9. What kind of wood were the trolls Bert, Bill (William), and Tom sitting on when Bilbo finds them feasting on roast mutton?

Answer: Beech

The trolls were eating roasted mutton, drinking, and (of course) arguing among themselves when Bilbo found them sitting on beech logs. This shows that the flora of the region included groves of beeches.
10. What is the surname (last name, family name, etc.) of William the troll, also known as Bill?

Answer: Huggins

Only one troll had a last name mentioned: 'And I won't take that from you, Bill Huggins,' said Bert, and put a fist in William's eye.

Answer: White

The stones were hard for the company to find because some of the stones were small and others were covered with vegetation.

13. What kind of feet is Gollum described as having?

Answer: Webbed

Gollum is said to have been a Stoor, the water hobbit. Gollum once lived beside the Great River, Anduin, and his webbed feet must have been useful for paddling around and swimming.
14. What is the color of Beorn's chair in his Hall?

Answer: Black

Beorn sat at the head of the table and his legs were stretched out far under the table.
15. What are the Mirkwood-Elves favorite trees?

Answer: Beech

I have no idea why the Mirkwood elves like beech trees. Anyone have any ideas why they like beeches? Email me, please.
16. What kind of wood was the Elvenking's staff made of?

Answer: Oak

Along with his carven staff of Oak, he wore a crown of berries and red leaves for it was autumn.
17. How much of the dragon's gold hoard was Bilbo promised in return for his services as a burglar?

Answer: One-fourteenth

Bilbo was too caught up in getting rid of the dragon that he gave no thought about how he was going to transport all that treasure back home without murder and robberies. One-fourteenth of Thror's treasure was greater than the treasure of many mortal kings.
18. Which of the following animals were NOT mentioned as Beorn's pets?

Answer: Goats

Beorn had the power to converse with the animals in his care. Some animals, such as the dogs, could also stand on their hind legs and carry things in their forepaws.
19. What month does Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and co. arrive in Rivendell?

Answer: June

The co. arrive in June. They stay in Rivendell for at least two weeks. The night before they leave, Midsummer night's eve, Elrond is shown Thorin's map. Elrond discovers that there are moon letters written on the map, which could only be read by the light of the midsummer night's moon.
20. Who previously owned Glamdring, Gandalf's sword?
