Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What age did Aragorn live to?

Answer: 210

Aragorn, being of direct Númenorean descent, had a much greater lifespan than the average Man. He lived a full two-hundred and ten years. This was longer than any of his line since King Arvegil.
2. Which of these was a token of office of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor?

Answer: a white banner

Ruling Gondor in the stead of the Kings, the Ruling Stewards would not take up the crown, sceptre, nor sit upon the throne. Rather, they flew a white banner without charge and bore a white rod. The first Ruling Steward was Mardil Voronwë and there would be twenty-five more before the return of the King.
3. 'And long there he lay, an image of the splendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world'. Who is being described?

Answer: Aragorn

Aragorn entered the final rest in the House of the Kings. His crown and sceptre were passed on to his son, Eldarion. Arwen left Gondor and resided in Lórien; in the winter, she 'laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth'.
4. Which of these is *not* given as an attribute that gave the Dwarves victory in the War of the Dwarves and the Orcs?

Answer: their indomitable courage

With the knowledge that Orcs were holed up in Moria and responsible for the death of his father, Thrór, Thráin instigates the War of the Dwarves and the Orcs. The Dwarves set about sacking Orc strongholds; the war comes to a head before the Gates of Moria in the Battle of Azanulbizar.
5. In Middle-earth history, which of these occurred first?

Answer: shards of Narsil brought to Rivendell

The shards of Narsil were brought to Rivendell by Ohtar in the third year of the Third Age, Arwen was born in the two-hundred and forty-first year, and in the year 1050, the darkening of Greenwood earned it the name Mirkwood, and in that same year the Harfoots came to Eriador, the first mention of hobbits in the records.
6. What did Celeborn do a few years after Galadriel left for the Undying Lands?

Answer: moved to dwell with Elrond's sons in Rivendell

It is said that only a few years after Galadriel departed, Celeborn grew weary of his realm and left to dwell with Elladan and Elrohir in Imladris. In Lórien, 'there lingered sadly only a few of its former people, and there was no longer light or song in Caras Galadhon'.
7. Which of these is not a season in the Imladris Calendar?

Answer: waxing

The Calendar of Imladris recognised six seasons: spring, summer, autumn, fading, winter and stirring. Or in Quenya: tuilë, lairë, yávië, quellë, hrívë and coirë. The Shire Calendar had twelve months with peculiar names such as Winterfilth, Astron, Rethe, and Halimath.
8. Who created the Tengwar script from which much of Middle-earth drew their alphabets?

Answer: the Noldor

The scripts and letters of Third Age Middle-earth were all of Eldarin origin. The two dominant alphabets were the Tengwar, an alphabet of letters used for the written languages, and Certar, a runic alphabet used for incised inscriptions. The Tengwar was developed of old by the Noldor and the Certar later devised by the Sindar.
9. Which of these names is not of High-elven (Quenya) form?

Answer: Gilraen

The Men of Middle-earth mostly spoke in their native Westron tongue, but the kingly race of the Dúnedain spoke the Elvish Sindarin and the wisest amongst them were also learned in Quenya. The royal names of the Dúnedain were often of Quenya form (e.g. Elendil, Isildur and Elessar).
10. What was Meriadoc Brandybuck's un-anglicised surname (i.e. in the original Westron dialect)?

Answer: Brandagamba

The Hobbits spoke and wrote in a dialect of the Mannish Westron language; these words have been anglicised by the 'author' for the accommodation of English speakers. Brandybuck corresponded to Brandagamba, Zaragamba (Oldbuck) was the ancestral surname of the Brandybucks, and Braldagamba (presumably 'Headybuck') would have been something of an insult to Bucklanders. Baragamba is invented.
