Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what Age of Middle-Earth was the One Ring forged?

Answer: Second

It was forged around 1600 Second Age and was considered the second greatest artifact ever created, behind only the Silmarils of Feanor.
2. Sauron forged the One Ring in Mount Doom, in the Sammath Naur. What does Sammath Naur mean?

Answer: Chambers of Fire

This was where the forges of Sauron were located and afforded him access to the volcanic fires. The Cracks of Doom, where Frodo, Sam, and Gollum ended up on Mount Doom, were large fissures in the floor of the Sammath Naur and was where the Ring could be, and was, destroyed.
3. The Ring inscription could only be seen when the Ring was what?

Answer: Hot

The heat of Sauron's hand was enough to bring out the writing on the Ring. After Isildur cut the Ring off Sauron's hand, he was burned by its heat and could see the fine letters inscribed on it.
4. The Ring inscription ran on both the outside and the inside of the One Ring.

Answer: True

""Hold it up!" said Gandalf...As Frodo did so, he now saw fine lines, finer than the finest penstrokes, running along the ring, outside and inside: lines of fire that seemed to form letters of a flowing script." (quote taken from "The Fellowship of the Ring")
5. Which two Elves counselled Isildur to destroy the Ring after he cut it from Sauron's hand on the slopes of Mount Doom?

Answer: Elrond and Cirdan

Elrond was the herald of Gil-Galad, last High King of the Elves. Their advice was ignored by Isildur, who was determined to keep the Ring as an heirloom of his house. This act diminished the victory of the Last Alliance and caused much grief for another full Age of Middle-Earth.
6. Where did Isildur lose the One Ring (and his life) when his party was ambushed by Orcs?

Answer: The Gladden Fields

Isildur was on his way to begin his rule in Arnor when he and his party were ambushed by a massive host of Orcs. Isildur tried to escape by putting the Ring on and swimming across the river. The Ring betrayed him, however, when it slipped off his finger exposing him to the Orcs, who shot him full of arrows.

The Ring sank to the riverbed and remained there for over 2,000 years. Thus the Ring also became known as Isildur's Bane.
7. How did Smeagol (Gollum) say he came into possession of the One Ring?

Answer: It was a gift from his grandmother

Smeagol actually killed his friend Deagol after he found the Ring while they were fishing. Smeagol used the Ring to play cruel jokes on the other hobbits and he was soon kicked out of the community. He always claimed that his grandmother had given the Ring to him as a birthday present.
8. For approximately how long did Gollum possess the Ring?

Answer: 500 years

The Ring was found in approximately 2463 Third Age by Deagol who was immediately relieved of it by Gollum. Bilbo found it in 2941 Third Age during his expedition to the Lonely Mountain with Thorin and Company.
9. True or False: When Gandalf is relaying the history of the One Ring to Frodo, he says that Dragon fire could also be used to destroy the Ring, but that there are no Dragons left in Middle-Earth to do so.

Answer: False

"It has been said that dragon-fire could melt and consume the Rings of Power, but there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough; nor was there ever any dragon, not even Ancalagon the Black, who could have harmed the One Ring..." (quote taken from "The Fellowship of the Ring")
10. Finish this quote: ""Bring out the Ring, Frodo", said Gandalf solemnly. "The time has come"...The Ring gleamed and flickered as he held it up before them in his trembling hand. "Behold _______ ______!" said Elrond." (quote taken from "The Fellowship of the Ring", page 260)

Answer: Isildur's Bane

The Dunedain of Arnor referred to the Ring as Isildur's Bane as it brought about the death of Isildur in the early years of the Third Age. See Question 6 for more information.
11. From the time Frodo leaves the Shire on his quest to destroy the Ring, until the quest is achieved, how many times does he use the Ring?

Answer: 6

1) In the house of Tom Bombadil; 2) At the Prancing Pony (accidentally, after falling off a table); 3) On Weathertop, during the attack of the Ringwraiths; 4) and 5) During his confrontation with Boromir at Parth Galen. He puts it on to elude Boromir, runs to the top of the hill and sits in the Seat of Seeing.

He sees the Eye of Sauron looking for him and he takes it off. He then puts it back on to go back to the boats so he can secretly leave but is caught by Sam; 6) On Mount Doom, when he claims the Ring for his own.
12. What tower did Sauron build with aid from the power of the One Ring?

Answer: Barad-dur

More commonly known as the Dark Tower, it was built during the Second Age and was completed using the power of the One Ring. Thus, the foundations could not be unmade while the Ring survived. After the Ring was destroyed, Barad-dur fell and never rose again.
13. How does Faramir learn that Frodo bears the One Ring?

Answer: Sam accidentally blurts it out

Sam accidentally mentions the Ring while speaking of Boromir's lust for it. While the hobbits become frightened, Faramir assures them he is not like his brother and does not desire the Ring. He proves true to his word and provides valuable aid to the hobbits.
14. As Sam tries to figure out a way to rescue Frodo from the tower of Cirith Ungol, his thoughts turn to the Ring. He sees himself with a flaming sword marching across Mordor with armies that flock to his call, while flowers and trees spring up everywhere and the sun shines brightly down as he overthrows Sauron. What does he call himself during this vision?

Answer: Samwise the Strong

Fortunately, Sam passes this test of the Ring and realizes that the vision is nothing more than a trick. This act of rejection, more than anything else, gave him the blessing of the Valar to travel to Valinor later in his life.
15. From the moment of its creation, to the time of its destruction, how many people touch the One Ring?

Answer: 9

1) Sauron; 2) Isildur; 3) Deagol; 4) Smeagol (Gollum); 5) Bilbo; 6) Frodo; 7) Gandalf; 8) Tom Bombadil; 9) Sam. Of these, only Deagol and Gandalf never actually wear the Ring. Gandlaf holds it for a minute in the chapter "Shadow of the Past" in "The Fellowship of the Ring".

There is speculation that there could perhaps be one more, but this is never made clear. This is when Frodo first reaches Rivendell and he wakes to find the Ring on a new chain around his neck. Tolkien never gives an indication as to who handles the Ring at this time but my educated guess would say that it would have been Gandalf, mainly because I cannot imagine him allowing (or trusting) anyone else to do it. One can argue that it may have been Elrond as it does state that it was he who healed and tended to Frodo, but without any solid indication from Tolkien, I cannot include him in the answer.
