Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were the Three, Seven, and Nine Rings forged?

Answer: Eregion

Eregion, also known as Hollin, was inhabited by the Elves in the Second Age. Celebrimbor of the Elves forged the rings, and they were ancestors of Fëanor, who forged the Silmarils. Valinor was the home of the Valar, Orodruin is Mount Doom in Mordor, and Minas Tirith is the capital of Gondor.
2. Who built the tower Orthanc (Saruman's fortress) in Isengard?

Answer: Númenorean men

It was built to house one of the palantíri, which it did. Sauron and the Ring didn't build Orthanc; they built Barad-dûr in Mordor. Elrond has never had a tower, and Saruman occupies Orthanc.
3. Where was the Tower of Amon Sûl?

Answer: Weathertop

It was destroyed in 1409 (Third Age) by the Witch-King of Angmar, in an invasion of the Numénorean realm-in-exile of Arnor. The Witch-king is also the chief Nazgûl, who is killed by Eowyn while defending Minas Tirith at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Amon Sûl also was home to a palantír.
4. Which of the following has never been a ring-bearer of one of the Three Rings for the Elves?

Answer: Celeborn

The three original ring-bearers were Gil-galad, Galadriel, and Círdan. Gil-galad gave his ring to Elrond, Galadriel kept hers, and Círdan gave his to Gandalf, despite the fact that he was not an elf.
5. What was the name of the location of Morgoth's second stronghold?

Answer: Thangorodrim

Thangorodrim was the site of the Great Battle that resulted in the overthrow of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, by the Host of Valinor. The Silmarils were hidden in the fortress of Angband by Morgoth after their theft from Aman. Dol Guldur was Sauron's stronghold; Eressëa was where the Noldor dwelt after the Great Battle; and Isengard was Saruman's citadel.
6. The Shire hobbits' ancestors and the ancestors of the Rohirrim once lived near each other.

Answer: True

It's true, because their names and place names are very similar to words in Rohan, and the Rohirrim word 'holbytla' means 'hole-builder', so the association is obvious. We know that the Rohirrim came to Rohan in relatively recent times.
7. By the time of the War of the Ring, for roughly how many years had Osgiliath in Gondor been abandoned?

Answer: 500

We see Osgiliath in the film adaptation of The Two Towers, and it certainly looks like it had abandoned for 500 years! Osgiliath was the chief city of Gondor before its ruin by Sauron.
8. What was the name of Morgoth's associate in the destruction of the Two Trees of Valinor?

Answer: Ungoliant

Ungoliant wanted the Silmarils that Morgoth stole from Tirion and Fëanor, and she sucked the light out of the Trees before Morgoth burned them. Elenwë was one of the Valar, Melkor was Morgoth's Vala name before being cursed by Fëanor, and Eru (or Ilúvatar) was the Creator. Shelob is of Ungoliant's kind.
9. True or False: Aragorn has a blood tie to Gil-galad.

Answer: True

It's a very long and distant link, but it's true! If you go through all 39 of Aragorn's direct predecessors, through Isildur, Elendil, and all the Kings of Númenor, you eventually reach Elros, mortal brother of Elrond. Follow Elrond through Eärendil, then his mother Idril Celebrindal, then his father Turgon of Gondolin. Turgon's brother was High King Fingon son of Fingolfin, whose son was Gil-galad.

This means that Aragorn has blood from both leaders of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
10. After the departure of Galadriel to the Undying Lands, how many Elves remained in Lothlórien after Celeborn left for Rivendell?

Answer: None

All the Elves had left Lórien after a few years of the Fourth Age, when Celeborn went to Rivendell. Arwen died there in SR 1541, not long after Aragorn's death.
