Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happens when Fiddler reads the Deck of Dragons in Lether?

Answer: The cards attack the attendees.

Tavore insists that many people attend the reading, as if knowing this would happen. Each card flies into the person who is given that role and propels him or her backwards, injuring most of the attendees. Tavore is not designated a role. As a side effect of reading the Deck in a land that uses another magic system, Tiles, disturbances take place all over, including transforming Curdle and Telorast into full dragons. Oh, and Ublala punches the god Errant in the face to save Brys' life.
2. What does Bugg give Tavore before the Malazans march across the Wastelands?

Answer: A dagger

It is a water-etched dagger. Bugg (aka Mael) instructs her to use it only when blood is needed. We don't find out why she blanches when given the gift, and it isn't used in this book.
3. The K'Chain Che'Malle choose Kalyth to be their what?

Answer: Destriant

A Destriant brings justice in a god's name. Usually, the triumvirate of Destriant, Mortal Sword, and Shield Anvil serve a particular god or goddess; in this instance, a species wants the same group.
4. In "Dust of Dreams", what is the Snake?

Answer: A group of refugee children

Not to be confused with the Shake, another group on the move, the Snake consists of Letherii children escaping their homelands. In "Deadhouse Gates", someone summarizes the horror of the human condition with the words "children are dying". The Snake subplot directly shows us the point-of-view of suffering and dying children. Every day, some are left behind without much concern, as so many die from the elements, starvation, or being eaten alive by creatures.
5. In "Dust of Dreams", who wants to write the "Book of the Fallen"?

Answer: Badalle

In one instance of the book commenting on itself, Badalle laments the number of the dead and says she could write a book ten thousand pages long about them. Said length is not far from the number of paperback pages one needs to read in this ten-book series. She also thinks no one would read it.

Some of the Fallen include Coltaine, Whiskeyjack, Felisin Paran, Dujek Onearm, T'amber, Truth, Fear Sengar, Trull Sengar, Rhulad Sengar, Toc the Younger, Beak, Feather Witch, Hannan Mosag, Anomander Rake, and Empress Laseen. Some dead are brought back to life, such as Tattersail, Ganoes Paran, T'ool, Hedge, Shurq, Hood, and Brys Beddict. However, life after coming back is never the same.
6. What fate befalls Hetan in "Dust of Dreams"?

Answer: Hobbling

Hetan's hobbling might be the most grisly section in the series. It's too graphic to describe on this site, but it involves mutilation and assault. Perhaps worse is that she believes she deserves it because she thinks her lack of action (as she knew what the Barghast would do to her when her husband was killed) caused the deaths of her children (who are not actually dead).

Hetan does not survive long, freezing to death not many days after her ordeal begins. One of the children of the Snake sees her death by hypothermia in a vision.
7. Upon Anomander Rake's death, who is released from Dragnipur and begins traveling with Ublala?

Answer: Draconus

Draconus has been chained inside Dragnipur (which was previously his sword) for the entire series; Ganoes Paran meets him briefly in the first book, "Gardens of the Moon". Upon the sword's destruction in "Toll the Hounds", Draconus, along with other prisoners, is released. The Eleint Draconus is the father of Lady Envy and Sister Spite.
8. What does Hedge call his group of recruits within the Bonehunters?

Answer: Bridgeburners

The dead Bridgeburners ascended in "Memories of Ice" and eventually became guardians at Hood's Gate; most of the survivors retired. Hedge decides to revive the name. Bonehunter Fiddler was a Bridgeburner but is not under Hedge's command.
9. Which Malazan marines are designated Mortal Sword and Shield Anvil for the K'Chain Che'Malle?

Answer: Gesler and Stormy

As Gesler and Stormy simply vanish, Fiddler and others assume they were abducted, though some think they deserted. A Che'Malle plucks them out of their tent and brings them to its people. Stormy and Gesler began to become Ascendants all the way back in "Deadhouse Gates". And through everything, they never stop arguing.
10. How does Quick Ben take down a group of K'Chain Nah'ruk at the end of "Dust of Dreams?"

Answer: He sets the air on fire.

The Bonehunters appear to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and walk into a slaughter. Ben destroys some of the enemy and vanishes, his status unknown. The Nah'ruk are defeated when Stormy and Gesler take command of the Che'Malle and come to the army's aid; Sinn also helps by incinerating several skykeeps.
