Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Carry On Sergeant' was the first of the films to be made. Who was the main star who later went on to make their name in a TV show about a doctor?

Answer: William Hartnell

Although classed as the first 'Carry On', it contained none of the slapstick and bawdy humour that was synonymous with the rest of the series. It was a gentle comedy about a bunch of inept army recruits and the efforts of their platoon sergeant, played by Hartnell, to turn them into first class soldiers before he finally retired from the army. William Hartnell went on to become the first television Doctor Who. Bob Monkhouse had a very successful career as a game show host and stand up comic, Hattie Jacques starred with Eric Sykes on TV as well as remaining a stalwart of the 'Carry Ons' for several years and Bernard Cribbens went on to voice The Wombles as well as appearing in other films and even making a record.
2. The second 'Carry On' film was 'Carry On Nurse'. It was the debut for the longest serving female member of the cast. Who was she?

Answer: Joan Sims

Released in 1959, it was filmed in around six weeks at Pinewood Studios. It was the first of the films to include the lavatorial humour that was to become a trademark of the series.
Joan Sims played a relatively minor role as the bumbling student nurse Stella Dawson. She went on to appear in a total of 24 'Carry On' films, her last being 'Carry On Emmanuelle' in 1978. Joan passed away in 2001.
It was in this film that Leslie Phillips uttered the phrase 'Ding ...Dong'.
3. Which 'Carry On' film was released in 1959 and was set in a Secondary Modern school?

Answer: Carry On Teacher

'Carry On Teacher' was set at Maudlin Street school and revolved around the efforts of the teachers to control their unruly pupils. Ted Ray made his only 'Carry On' appearance as the acting headmaster trying to give a good impression during a school inspection. The children did their best to disrupt the visit because it could lead to Ray's character leaving the school for pastures new.
4. 'Carry On Constable' was the first of the series to be released in the 1960s. It was memorable for being the first 'Carry On' to include any form of nudity and for the first appearance of which regular star?

Answer: Sid James

'Constable' followed the efforts of three bungling newly arrived policemen, Kenneth Connor, Kenneth Williams and Leslie Phillips, and their sergeant who tried to turn them into real officers. James' portrayal of Wilkins as the kind hearted sergeant trying to cover for his bungling Inspector, as well as getting exasperated by the efforts of the new recruits, was a stark contrast to the roles he was to play in later films of the series. Sid James was not first choice for the role of Sergeant Wilkins.

It was originally going to go to Ted Ray, but because of contractual differences he was dropped from the films.
5. The fifth 'Carry On' to be released, in 1961, differed slightly in format from all the others. It was more a series of sketches than a continuous story line. It centered around the Helping Hands agency and was called 'Carry On...?

Answer: Regardless

Sid James played Bert Handy, owner of the Helping Hands agency who recruited a set of disgruntled job seekers. Business was slow at first but soon picked up and the film followed the characters as they got into all sorts of trouble trying to do a days work.

This included taking a pet chimp for a walk and modelling a new wardrobe for a man to surprise his wife. This had the inevitable result that she walked in part way through and jumped to the wrong conclusion. This film marked the debut of Liz Fraser.
6. The first 'Carry On' to be made in colour was 'Carry On Cruising', released in 1962. In this film Lance Percival played a chef. What was his particular problem?

Answer: Seasickness

The plot of 'Carry On Cruising' followed the same format that was established in the first film, 'Carry On Sergeant'. In this one Sid James was the Captain of the S.S Happy Wanderer and had to put up with five new crew members at very short notice. Lance Percival's performance as the seasick chef was probably one of the best in the whole film. Various scenes centered around the ship's doctor trying to find a cure for him so he could work below decks.
7. This 'Carry On' was about a wife, Hattie Jacques, starting a rival company to her work obsessed husband, Sid James. Which 'Carry On' was it?

Answer: Cabby

'Cabby' was released in 1963 and saw a return to black and white. Charlie Hawkins (Sid James) put his company before his wife. When he forgot their wedding anniversary, she decided to set up a rival taxi company staffed only by beautiful young women. Her firm was a roaring success, but he didn't realise who was running it and tried all sorts of tactics to put her out of business. This film was Jim Dale's debut and also featured the first of two performances by Amanda Barrie.

It didn't start production as a 'Carry On' but as an adaptation of a stage play, 'Call Me A Cab'.

It changed its title part way through production.
8. 'Carry On Jack' was the first of the 'Carry On' films to feature a historical setting and period costumes.

Answer: True

'Carry on Jack' was set on board the frigate Venus and was the tale of a newly qualified (after 8 1/2 years) Midshipman Albert Poop-Decker. On his way to join his ship, his uniform was stolen and he ended up getting press ganged to the ship. He arrived on board to find a female wearing his uniform and passing herself off as Midshipman Poop-Decker. With the majority of the regular cast missing, it was not a very successful film. Only Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey appeared for any length of time.
9. Which 'Carry On' film, the ninth in the series, was the debut for Barbara Windsor playing Daphne Honeybutt and featured an organisation called STENCH?

Answer: Carry On Spying

'Carry On Spying' was the last one to be made in black and white. Released in 1964, it was seen as a spoof of 'James Bond' and several things had to be changed after complaints by Cubby Broccoli. References to 'The Third Man' and 'Casablanca' can also be seen. STENCH, the Society for the Total Extinction of Non Conforming Humans, had stolen a secret formula and it was up to agents Simpkins, Bind, Crump and Honeybutt to retrieve it.

The action took them all over the world before ending up back in the UK.
10. 'Carry On Cleo', the tenth film, was shot on the left over film lot used for 'Lawrence of Arabia'.

Answer: False

'Cleo' was filmed on the set of and used some of the costumes from 'Cleopatra', which had been filmed the year before with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
The Romans had invaded Britain and took some of the inhabitants back to Rome. Meanwhile Marc Antony had become besotted with Cleopatra, but the only way he could get her was to kill Caesar and his bodyguard.
It featured a scantily clad Amanda Barrie as Cleopatra and the now famous line of Kenneth Williams, "Infamy, infamy. They've all got it in for me". There were several historical inaccuracies in the film, but the 'Carry On' crew never let this get in the way of one of the better films of the series.
