Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Dead Men Tell No Tales' opened with a child climbing on board Will Turner's ship, the Flying Dutchman. Who were they?

Answer: Henry, Will Turner's son

Henry Turner was twelve when he visited his father, Will Turner. Will had been cursed since he became captain of the Flying Dutchman in 'At World's End'. His son had heard of a way to break the curse and rowed out to sea to tell Will the news. He tied rocks to his ankle so that he would sink and land on the deck of the sunken Dutchman.
2. Which object did the child believe could free Will Turner from the curse he and his crew were under?

Answer: Trident of Poseidon

Henry Turner boarded the Flying Dutchman to tell Will that the Trident of Poseidon could free him from the curse. Henry went on to join the British Royal Navy, but was imprisoned for treason when he tried to warn the captain that they were entering the Devil's Triangle.
3. True or false: Captain Salazar was a pirate.

Answer: False

Armando Salazar was an officer in the Spanish Navy who gained a reputation as a pirate hunter. He was nicknamed 'el Matador del Mar', which means 'the Matador of the Sea'. As a younger man, Jack Sparrow lured Captain Salazar into the Devil's Triangle (also known as the Bermuda Triangle). Salazar's ship sunk and the crew drowned, but were resurrected as undead sailors.
4. Why was Carina Smyth in a prison at the beginning of the film?

Answer: She had been imprisoned for witchcraft.

Carina was accused of witchcraft because she showed an interest in science, particularly in astronomy. She grew up in an orphanage, treasuring a diary that her father left to her. With the help of a blood moon, the diary led Carina and Henry to the Trident of Poseidon.
5. What was Jack Sparrow doing at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Robbing a bank

Sparrow, Gibbs, and a small band of pirates attempted to rob a bank on the island of Saint Martin. They tied ropes around a safe and tried to pull it through the wall using horses. It didn't quite go to plan, however. The safe didn't break through the wall, but instead dislodged the whole bank from the row of buildings it was a part of.

The horses dragged the bank though the streets and through - literally right through - the town gates.
6. Jack Sparrow was sentenced to be executed. Which 'new invention' was his method of choice?

Answer: Guillotine

Jack had never heard of the guillotine before, so when his head was placed on the block he said, 'I'm not one to complain normally, but this basket's full of heads'. The origins of the guillotine date back to the thirteenth century, with a number of contraptions utilizing a moving blade as a method of execution.

The first guillotine execution occurred in France in 1792. Although the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films are far from historically accurate, 'On Stranger Tides' was set in 1750, which presumably places 'Salazar's Revenge' at least 40 years later. Barbossa, however, states that Blackbeard shrunk the Black Pearl 'five winters ago'.
7. Jack, Henry, and Carina washed up on a beach after abandoning their rowing boat. Why couldn't Salazar follow them?

Answer: He couldn't step on to land.

The three ended up on a rowing boat after Jack's crew mutinied. With the help of Barbossa, Salazar went after Jack, so Carina dived out of the boat and swam to a nearby island. An undead shark attacked Jack and Henry, so all three ended washed up on the beach. Salazar and his crew couldn't step out of the water onto dry land. One sailor who did vanished into thin air.
8. Who was revealed to be Carina Smyth's father?

Answer: Captain Barbossa

Barbossa recognised the diary that Carina used to find the Trident. He initially accused her of stealing, until he found out her name. Jack Sparrow recognised her name, too, and blackmailed Barbossa. In the end, Barbossa's tattoo of the stars revealed that he was Carina's father. He sacrificed himself to save her from Salazar.
9. Who was Will Turner reunited with at the end of the film?

Answer: Elizabeth

As captain of the Flying Dutchman, Will had to ferry the souls of people who had died at sea into the afterlife. He was an immortal who could only step on land once every ten years. By breaking the Trident of Poseidon, Henry removed all curses inflicted on people at sea. Will Turner was once again able to live on land.

Salazar's curse was also broken and he and his crew became mortal again. The problem was, they were trapped at the bottom of the ocean when it happened.
10. After the credits, there was one final scene. Who appeared to have returned in Will and Elizabeth's bedroom?

Answer: Davy Jones

Davy Jones was the cursed captain of the Flying Dutchman in 'Dead Man's Chest' and 'At World's End'. During 'At World's End', his heart was stabbed and replaced with Will Turner's. His shadow and his crab claw appeared in the bedroom as Will and Elizabeth slept. Will thought it was a dream, but when he awoke, there was a small puddle and some barnacles on the floor.
