Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With films like 'Angels with Dirty Faces' and 'Captain Blood' already under his belt, which classic Hollywood Oscar-winning director oversaw the creation of 1939's 'Dodge City'?

Answer: Michael Curtiz

Michael Curtiz had already worked with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland on several pictures, including 'Captain Blood' and 'The Adventures of Hollywood', so their recombination for this blockbuster western was a no-brainer. Curtiz would later win a Best Director Oscar for the 1942 film 'Casablanca'.
2. The hero of our film is Wade Hatton, a cattle man with a long history. Which star of many a Hollywood swashbuckling epic sunk his heels into this role?

Answer: Errol Flynn

Errol Leslie Flynn, swashbuckling star of such films as 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' and 'The Dawn Petrol', scored another hit with 'Dodge City'. He would appear in the follow-up film 'Virginia City' the next year.
3. Olivia de Havilland plays the lead female role in this film, a gentile prarie woman surnamed Irving. What is the given name of the lovely Ms de Havilland's character?

Answer: Abbie

As fans of Olivia de Havilland well know, she played the lead female role alongside Errol Flynn in about a dozen films, including the aforementioned 'The Adventures of Robin Hood', 'The Charege of the Light Brigade' and 'Captain Blood'. de Havilland turned 89 years old in July of 2005.
4. Wade Hatton and an entire cattle train rolls into Dodge City early in the film. Soon enough, they discover that the town is run with an iron fist by whom?

Answer: Jeff Surrett

Jeff Surrett is played by the inimitable Bruce Cabot in this film. Born Etienne Pelissier Jacques de Bujac, Cabot appeared in the 1933 film 'King Kong' as Jack Driscoll. In the 1960s and 1970s, he appeared in a dozen films alongside John Wayne, including 'McLintock!' (1963) and 'Chisum' (1970).

Early in the film, the rivalry between Hatton and Surrett is established, when Hatton arrests Surrett for killing too many buffalo on the free range.
5. Which actor plays the part of the comic relief in the film, encapsulated in the character Rusty Hart, the boisterous sidekick of Wade Hatton?

Answer: Alan Hale

Alan Hale was a character actor regularly appearing in films beginning in the 1910s. He made appearances in films such as 'Stella Dallas' and 'Gentleman Jim'. His son became famous, too. He was the Skipper on 'Gilligan's Island'!
6. After a series of bad deeds are committed in the town of Dodge City, Wade Hatton becomes sheriff of the town. In which U.S. state is Dodge City located?

Answer: Kansas

Dodge City is an historic terminal town of the great cattle drives. Remembered for its early lawlessness, it harbored such individuals as Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp.
7. In one rousing scene, former Union and Confederate soldiers are collected in one large saloon. The Union soldiers begin singing 'Marching Through Georgia', to which the Confederate soldiers respond with which southern anthem?

Answer: Dixie

Following the scene of the two groups singing comes one of the all-time greatest barfight scenes in Hollywood history. Dozens of chairs are smashed, and dozens of drunken sots are tossed through windows. Eventually, the southerners from Georgia claim victory in this blazing brouhaha.
8. In one silly scene, Rusty Hart attempts to join a seemingly all-female temperance group. What is the collective name for these abstemious teetotallers?

Answer: Pure Prarie League

The Pure Prarie League was a real organization that was formed in the late 19th century. A country rock band of the 1970s and 1980s took their name from this organization.

In the film, the Pure Prarie League meeting occurs simultaneously with the outrageous brawl in the saloon. Rusty Hart hilariously attempts to join the temperance league, but is eventually drawn into the fisticuffs.
9. Which lawless outlaw is implicated in the murder of local newsman Joe Clemens, just as Clemens is writing a story that will implicate the big boss of the town in many acts of wrong doing?

Answer: Yancey

The insidious Yancey is played by Victor Jory. He is Surrett's right hand man. Frank McHugh plays Joe Clemens, the local newspaperman who hires Abbie Irving to write articles aimed towards the local townswomen. Clemens is killed by Yancey as he places the evidence against Surrett into his safe.
10. What is the setting for the culminating action scene, where the bad guys finally get theirs?

Answer: A moving train

Hatton and Hart attempt to move Yancey by train to Wichita, away from the angry mob in Dodge City that means to lynch him. On their way to Wichita, the train is commandeered by Surrett and his men. They are able to take Yancey off the train, but then are shot down by Hatton and Hart, all while the train is in flames. Quite an exciting ending.
