Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was planning on visiting Yorkshire?

Answer: King George V and Queen Mary

A letter was sent from a very important-looking place which is later revealed to be Buckingham Palace. The letter was then delivered via car, train and motorcycle (not necessarily in that order) to Robert at Downton Abbey.

Robert: "The King and Queen are coming to stay."
Mary: "What? During their Yorkshire tour?"
Robert: "That's it. Just for one night. They'll spend one night at Downton and go onto Harewood for a ball."
2. Which Crawley relation was amongst the royal visitors?

Answer: Lady Maud Bagshaw

Queen Mary and Lady Maud were going over the proposed visit to York. The visit included an overnight visit to Downton Abbey then onto Harewood where Princess Mary resided with her husband. Lady Maud explained to the Queen that Lord Grantham (Robert) was the nearest relation to her who was her heir. Then she went onto explain that her family and the Granthams had a falling out years ago. Violet "The Dowager" was of the mind that Robert should be her heir.

Lady Maud Bagshaw is played by Imelda Staunton who has been picked to play Queen Elizabeth II in "The Crown" and was Dolores Umbridge in "Harry Potter". Also, she is the real-life wife of Jim Carter (Mr. Carson).
3. Who phoned Lady Edith about the pending visit?

Answer: Cora

The family and staff were informed slowly in separate segments. Edith Marchioness of Hexham was at Brancaster Castle, her and Bertie Pelham's home, when Cora called to tell her of the visit.
4. Who said: "I never argue, I explain."

Answer: Violet Crawley

Violet Crawley (aka The Dowager) always thought she was right about everything and everyone was against her and or the family.

Lady Maud Bagshaw had just announced after the dinner with King George and Queen Mary that Robert wasn't her heir. They all questioned as to who it was so Maud announced it was her maid Lucy Smith.

Robert Crawley: "Please there's no need to argue."
The Dowager: "I never argue, I explain."
5. Who ordered Downton's staff around prior, during and after the visit?

Answer: Mr. Wilson

Prior to the royal visit Mr. Wilson, the Royal Page of the Backstairs, began giving orders to the Downton staff with news that others would be serving the King and Queen. Amongst the Royal Page was also a royal housekeeper, royal chef, royal dresser, leaving the Downton Abbey staff angry, stunned and saddened that they weren't going to serve the Granthams, the King and the Queen.
6. Who came back to work at Downton Abbey for the royal visit?

Answer: Carson

Before going to bed for the night, Mary went to the silver closet where utensils, candelabras, plates, etcetera were being stored. Thomas Barrow was going by a list to make sure they had enough. Mary asked why they can't decide what goes on their own table. Thomas told her that the King's page of the backstairs would tell him what to do upon his arrival.

Mary, believing Thomas was unable to manage the royal visit, went to Mr. Carson who was Downton's retired butler. Mary then went to Robert to tell him Carson was coming back causing Robert to wonder about Barrow. Then Carson appeared in the room with Mary and Robert and informed them that he sent for Barrow all without consulting Robert beforehand.
7. What items arrived in the pouring rain much to everyone's surprise?

Answer: Chairs

As the Crawleys, Isobel, Violet and Dickie were having dinner the chairs for the planned royal parade arrived in the pouring rain. With little to no staff to help Mary insisted on setting the chairs up with Anna Bates' help. Robert, Dickie, and Mosely joined the ladies in setting up the chairs.
8. Fill In the Blank: Robert Crawley: "Good night, ______. Remember to pray for us. Mainly, for better weather."

9. Who helped Tom Branson in a brief fight against Major Chetwode?

Answer: Lady Mary Talbot

Believing Major Chetwode was an honorable man Tom Branson made friends with him quickly even going to the village pub for drinks. Tom also thought Major Chetwode was on security detail for the pending royal visit. Moments before the parade was to start, Chetwode began to run to get himself into position on the King's left-hand side. Just as he took aim at the King, Tom knocked him down with Lady Mary standing there.

She stepped on Chetwode's hand and kicked the handgun away and Chetwode was arrested.
10. Who did Tom Branson console outside Downton Abbey?

Answer: Princess Mary

Earlier Cora, Lady Mary and Lady Edith went on a planned visit to Harewood House for lunch with Princess Mary. During the lunch a nanny brought Mary and the Viscount's children into the dining area, much to the ladies' delight. Princess Mary's husband, Henry Viscount Lascelles, entered the room and immediately ordered the children to be removed as they weren't allowed in the dining area.

At Downton Abbey however Princess Mary was in tears and comforted by Tom who had no clue as to her identity.
