Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, who wrote the short story that the movie was based upon?

Answer: Daphne Du Maurier

Du Maurier also wrote classic books such as "Rebecca" and "Jamaica In". She died in 1989, and apparently was a big fan of this film version of her work.
2. Which city was the film (mostly) shot in?

Answer: Venice

This remarkable movie manages to transform one of the most romantic cities in the world into a sinister one full of ominous signs and messages. I'm just glad I took my honeymoon before I watched it...
3. When "Don't Look Now" was aired at the cinema for the first time, it was the A-movie. What was the B-movie shown with it at that time, now equally regarded as a cult classic?

Answer: The Wicker Man

What a night at the cinema! Two of the greatest films of all time (in my humble opinion) one after the other. The fact thet they didn't follow the norm and both had extremely miserable, macabre endings made them all the more refreshing. It's just a pity that I was only three years old at the time so I never saw either of them until the eighties.
4. Which colour is a running theme throughout the film?

Answer: Red

Christine, the daughter of central characters John and Laura, wears a red raincoat as she dies at the beginning of the movie, and we see various glimpses of red continually throughout the film, making the viewer more and more uncomfortable each time.
5. How does the little girl, Christine, die at the beginning of the film?

Answer: She drowns

She dies after trying to retrieve her ball from the pond.
6. Towards the end of the film, John escorts one of the two elderly ladies from the police station back to her hotel room. From what affliction does she suffer?

Answer: Blindness

Her misfortune of her blindness only adds to the overall creepiness of the film. We are, at one stage, led to believe that the two old ladies are nothing but tricksters after we see a brief clip of them laughing together following a "seance" performed for the benefit of Laura. However, at the end of the film it becomes evident that she was telling the truth the whole time.
7. Here's an easy one for anyone who's seen the film. Who plays the main characters John and Laura?

Answer: Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie

Unlike so many films these days, these two actors really make you FEEL their sense of loss, their discomfort, even their love for each other, in what is just a wonderful, wonderful performance.
8. In one scene, Laura stops at a church to light a candle for the couple's deceased daughter. What does John say when they are inside the holy building?

Answer: "I don't like this church at all"

Originally there were three pages full of dialogue to go with this scene, but Sutherland turned to Christie prior to filming and uttered "I don't like this church at all". The film makers thought this worked so well that they kept it in and scrapped the vast majority of the remaining script for the scene.
9. It becomes clear on odd ocassions throughout the film that John himself has "the gift" of second sight too, as well as the old lady. Which of the following did he "see" shortly before it happened?

Answer: His own funeral

Shortly after Laura has caught the flight to London to oversee her son's recovery after a blow on the head, John sees her, still in Venice, on what appears to be a "funeral gondola". What he didn't know was that this was for him - it's just a pity he didn't see the events leading up to it...
10. John Baxter dies at the end of the film. How?

Answer: An elderly dwarf woman stabs him in the neck

Probably the most frightening looking character ever in a film, as Daphne Du Maurier put it in her short story, John's demise at the hands of the dwarf is "a bloody silly way to die". Nicolas Roeg created a cinematic masterpiece with this outstanding movie - if you've seen it you'll know what I mean. If you haven't, well, I've probably ruined it a little for you by now seeing as I've told you the bulk of the plot and taken away the surprise element. Sorry.
