Maximus Decimus Meridias, a general of the Roman Empire, is a true friend to the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Commodus, Aurelius' son, kills his father so that he can become the new Emperor. Commodus orders Maximus to be killed, but Maximus escapes, only to make his way home to find his wife and child are dead.

He ends up becoming a slave and is forced to fight battles in the Colisseum. He meets up with Commodus to attempt his revenge.

During the first meeting on the airplane between Edward Norton and Brad Pitt, Pitt's character opens his briefcase to reveal that he makes and sells soap. After returning to his home to see that it has been destroyed by a fire, Norton's character calls Pitt's and they get a drink. That drink leads to a fight, which leads to a fight club, and ends up in an attempt to destroy the nation's economy.
