Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While waiting to change to a butterfly, caterpillars made this 1985 movie starring Don Ameche and Jessica Tandy.

Answer: Cocoon

"Cocoon" was based on the book of the same name by David Saperstein and directed by Ron Howard. As well as Ameche and Tandy, the movie also starred Hume Cronyn Jr. who was the husband of Tandy for 52 years until her death in 1994. The movie is about a group of retirement home residents who discover a swimming pool which rejuvenates them, thanks to the alien energy it contains.
2. Did a group of rhinos play a part in this 2004 Sandra Bullock and Don Cheadle movie? Sounds possible by the title.

Answer: Crash

In addition to Bullock and Cheadle, "Crash" also starred Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito and Ludacris. At the 78th Academy Awards, "Crash" won three Oscars, including the coveted "Best Picture", beating out "Munich", "Capote" and controversially, "Brokeback Mountain". "Crash features several stories which interweave and concerns racial and social tensions in Los Angeles.

A crash is also the term for a group of rhinos.
3. Do this to get air into a balloon and find a movie starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz.

Answer: Blow

"Blow" was a 2001 movie based on the life of cocaine smuggler "Boston" George Jung who was a high ranking member of Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel. In 1994, Jung was arrested in Kansas with almost 800kg of cocaine, and as a result was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He was released in 2014 after gaining a reduced sentence in exchange for testifying against a former accomplice.
4. What could be hiding under a large hill of sand? Maybe a movie starring Kyle MacLachlan and Sting.

Answer: Dune

1984 movie "Dune" is a sci-fi cult classic based on the book of the same name by Frank Herbert. The planet Dune, in the movie, is the only source of "the spice", a drug required for space travel making it a much desired planet to control. The music for the movie was the first foray into soundtracks for rock band Toto.
5. This sign is obviously pointing to a 2009 movie that featured the voices of Ed Asner and Jordan Nagai.

Answer: Up

2009s "Up" was a hit with both adults and children as well as the Academy Awards committee as it became only the second animated movie to be nominated for "Best Picture", the first being "Beauty And The Beast" in 1991. Although Asner and Nagai voice the two main characters, Carl and Russell, for me, Bob Peterson stole the show as Dug the retriever with his lines such as "I have just met you, and I love you" and his constantly being distracted while in the middle of something important, "SQUIRREL".
6. Which city could this be? Maybe Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are just out of shot.

Answer: Casablanca

Released in 1942, "Casablanca" is a classic love story in which a nightclub owner (Bogart) protects an old flame (Bergman) and her husband, played by Paul Henreid from the Nazis. The movie has given us some of the most memorable lines from the cinema including, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine", "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" and "Here's looking at you, kid".

The line "Play it again Sam" is one of the most misquoted lines ever as this is never actually said in the movie.

Incidentally Sam, the pianist in the movie, was played by Dooley Wilson, who was a drummer and couldn't play the piano so all of the piano parts were dubbed. "Casablanca" and Wilson also gave us one of my all time favourite songs, "As Time Goes By", written by Herman Hupfeld.
7. Would it be a surprise if John Travolta and Olivia Newton John came out of a gun like this?

Answer: Grease

This 1978 movie about the kids at Rydell High School was based on the 1971 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, in which Travolta had played the part of Doody in a touring production of the show. The part of Sandy in the movie had to be rewritten for Newton John as she is Australian and was unable to do a convincing American accent.

The movie soundtrack yielded five top ten hits in UK and four in Canada, USA and Australia including "You're The One That I Want" a huge worldwide hit that was written especially for the movie and replaced "All Choked Up" which was used in the original stage show.
8. Which 2006 movie featured the voices of Owen Wilson and Paul Newman?

Answer: Cars

"Cars" has quite the list of voices with Cheech Marin, Larry The Cable Guy, George Carlin, Michael Keaton and Bonnie Hunt all appearing as well as racing drivers Michael Schumacher, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Mario Andretti and Richard Petty. "Cars" was the last feature film made by Newman, as he retired in 2007 aged 82 and sadly died in 2008. Surprisingly, considering his long and illustrious career, it was also his highest grossing movie.
9. Sean Penn and Emile Hirsch used some of this liquid to make a movie in 2008.

Answer: Milk

"Milk" was based on the life of Harvey Milk, who in 1977 became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. Although Milk served for only 11 months, he is regarded as an icon by the gay community and in 2009 was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The movie also starred Josh Brolin and James Franco and was nominated for eight Academy Awards.
10. Back in 1980, Leslie Nielsen and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made a movie together. Do you remember the title?

Answer: Airplane!

"Airplane" is filled with so many gags, audible and visual and gets better with each viewing. Classic lines such as "Roger Roger", "Looks like I picked the wrong week to give up ..." and "Don't call me Shirley", don't even need the full quote to raise a smile, as does mention of Otto, the inflatable pilot.

In a 2006 poll by UK TV channel, Channel 4, "Airplane" was voted the second best comedy film of all time, losing out to "Monty Python's The Life of Brian".
