Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm in a noisy cantina in "Star Wars", having drinks at the bar with a wookie. Harrison Ford is talking to Alec Guinness and Mark Hamill in a booth. Which town am I in?

Answer: Mos Eisley

"A wretched hive of scum and villainy" is how Mos Eisley is referred to. The name of the bar is "Chamun's Cantina" and there exists a plastic figurine for every character in this memorable scene. Mos Eisley is on Luke's home planer of Tatooine, the name of which was taken from a nearby town in the country of Tunisia where the exteriors were shot.
2. I'm in a bar in Washington D.C. which shares its name with the title of the movie. Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson are fresh out of Georgetown University and discussing the difficulties of adulthood over drinks. Which bar and film am I in?

Answer: St. Elmo's Fire

Joel Schumacher co-wrote and directed this 1985 brat pack drama, none of which is actually shot on Georgetown's campus. Upon reading the script, administrators refused to allow shooting at GU, and the producers ended up using the University of Maryland for the on-campus shots.

The bar where much of the movie takes place is fictional, but based on The Tombs, which is a popular hangout for Georgetown students.
3. I'm sipping a Heineken and watching Isabella Rossellini sing "Blue Velvet" to Dennis Hopper. Where am I?

Answer: The Slow Club

"Blue Velvet" was directed by David Lynch in 1986, and immediately became a cult classic. The Slow Club is on route 7 outside of Lumberton and has neon antlers on it's facade. Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern go to see the Blue Lady perform, suspecting her involvement in a plot that begins to unravel when MacLachlan finds a severed ear in the opening scene.

The Blue Lady is the stage name for Isabella Rossellini's character, Dorothy Vallens.
4. I'm in a gay bar where everyone is wearing leather and dancing the tango. The guys back at the "Police Academy" aren't going to believe this. Where am I?

Answer: The Blue Oyster

"Police Academy" came out in 1984 and spawned seven sequels. Steve Guttenberg's character, Mahoney, was a practical joker. His rivals were duped into appearing at the gay biker bar several times in the series. The Blue Oyster is actually the Silver Dollar Lounge in Toronto.

Although it grossed over $80 million in the U.S., making more than one "Police Academy" movie was called the 8th "dumbest decision in movie history" by "Total Film".
5. I'm in perhaps the most famous bar ever on screen. Humphrey Bogart can't get Ingrid Bergman out of his head, and here she is in Casablanca asking Sam to play "As Time Goes By". Who's Cafe Americain am I in?

Answer: Rick's

Humphrey Bogart played Rick, who lands in Casablanca after Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa leaves him in Paris. Rick's Cafe Americain was inspired by Hotel El Minzah in Tangiers. Dooley Wilson, who played Sam, was actually a professional drummer who did not know how to play the piano.

He faked the movements as he watched the real pianist off screen during the famous scene where Ilsa begs him to play "As Time Goes By". "Casablanca" won the Oscar for best picture in 1942, and the play upon which it was based is entitled "Everybody Comes to Rick's".
6. I'm in a saloon out west watching Marlene Dietrich sing a risqué number, "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have". Jimmy Stewart is the small town sheriff whom she eventually falls in love with in this comedic western of 1939. I'm in which film?

Answer: Destry Rides Again

"Destry Rides Again" was directed by George Marshall and remade in 1954 by the same director to less success. The 1939 version was chosen as part of the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1996. Marlene Dietrich's character was spoofed famously by Madeline Kahn in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles".
7. I'm at a "Cabaret" table with Michael York in pre-war Berlin watching Liza Minnelli sing "Mein Herr" and admiring her green fingernails. I'm in which cabaret?

Answer: Kit Kat Klub

Bob Fosse directed this 1972 musical and won the Oscar, after Billy Wilder and Gene Kelly both passed on directing. The Kit Kat Klub serves as a symbol of the free-spirited Wiemar Republic of Germany, which lasted until Hitler came to power in 1933. Liza Minnelli's character, Sally Bowles, has green fingernails in several scenes, including the one described above.

This is taken from the introduction of "Perfectly Marvelous", a song in the original stage version. She remarks, "For example, if I should paint my fingernails green - oh and it just so happens that I do paint them green - well, if any one should ask why, I'd say I think it's pretty".
8. I'm in an empty hotel bar with Jack Nicholson, in the dead of winter. He's talking to the bartender, who may or may not be real, about "correcting" his family. I don't have to have "the shining" to assume he might go crazy and kill them with an axe! What hotel am I quickly leaving?

Answer: The Overlook Hotel

"The Shining", directed by Stanley Kubrick, was released in 1980. Stephen King wrote most of the novel in the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, and the exteriors were shot at the Timberline Hotel in Oregon. The Overlook is also the name used in the book, although the versions are far from similar.
9. I'm backpacking through England with two students, one of whom is about to become "An American Werewolf in London". We've briefly stopped in a pub to get warm when we notice a pentagram on the wall. Where are we?

Answer: The Slaughtered Lamb

John Landis directed "An American Werewolf in London", which was released in 1981, although he wrote it in 1970 when he was just 19. The Slaughtered Lamb's sign depicts a wolf killing a sheep, foreshadowing the next scene in which the two students are attacked by a werewolf after they leave the pub. All the songs used in the movie have "moon" in the title.
10. I'm in prohibition-era speakeasy where "Some Like it Hot". Tony Curtis is playing the saxophone and Jack Lemmon is slapping the bass. I'm getting pretty tipsy on the "coffee" they serve here. What city am I in?

Answer: Chicago

Billy Wilder's 1959 masterpiece "Some Like it Hot" was named the funniest comedy of all time by the American Film Institute, though it won no Oscars. The film, which shows Lemmon and Curtis in drag for much of the duration, was banned in Kansas upon it's release.

The three kinds of "coffee" served at the speakeasy are Canadian, Scotch, and sour mash. This scene comes early in the film, before Lemmon and Curtis have to flee Chicago in disguise as women musicians.
