Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alright, we'll start at the beginning: What movie did AFI say was the best movie of all time?

Answer: Citizen Kane

Directed, written and starring Orson Welles, this movie is a timeless masterpiece. Loosely based on the life of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, you can not say you are a movie buff if you have not seen this!
2. At #38, this movie features Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray in a sticky spot, thanks to a murder and an insurance policy.

Answer: Double Indemnity

Made in 1944 and directed by Billy Wilder, this movie definitely has its appeal. The twists keep coming and each scene is more shocking and gut-wrenching then the next.
3. The last movie on the list is "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and its star proved to be a surprising musical talent. Can you name the star?

Answer: James Cagney

Cagney, who had been made famous in gangster roles, surprised everyone when he proved he had musical abilities. In addition, Cagney's only Oscar came from this movie, which continues to shock many.
4. This movie is the only one to have its sequel make the list too.

Answer: The Godfather

If you are taking this quiz, it is very likely that you have seen both "The Godfather" and its extremely successful sequel. If not, you are missing out! Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro play Vito Corleone in the first and the sequel respectively, and Al Pacino plays Michael Corleone in both.

Much of the sequel is actually a prequel because it shows Vito as a younger man, while at the same time continuing with Michael's story.
5. "Gone With the Wind", listed at #4, featured this pair as Ashley and Melanie Wilkes.

Answer: Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland

Leslie Howard was in his forties when he was chosen to play Ashley Wilkes, and was forced to wear tons of makeup to make him look younger. In addition, both he and Vivien Leigh had to cover up British accents. In my opinion, "Gone With the Wind" is the greatest movie of all time!
6. "Schindler's List", the film listed at #9, was directed by this man.

Answer: Steven Spielberg

"Schindler's List" was done in all black & white, except for an extremely memorable little girl in a red dress. It starred Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ralph Fiennes as the Nazi Amon Goeth, and Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern. Spielberg took many years to make to film, making sure that he was as accurate as possible.
7. This film, at #52, earned Frank Sinatra a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and co-starred Montgomery Clift and Burt Lancaster, among others.

Answer: From Here to Eternity

And there's an interesting story behind Sinatra's success in this film. It is believed by some that the character of Johnny Fontaine in "The Godfather" was based on Frank Sinatra. In the movie, Fontaine goes to Corleone and asks him for help in getting the movie role of a lifetime, that the studio refuses to allow him to audition for.

There is a rumor that this did happen in real life, and "From Here to Eternity" was the movie that Sinatra needed to salvage his career. I don't think Sinatra went as far as putting a horse head in the guy's bed, but the stories are strikingly similar!
8. Name the musical that this song performed by Gene Kelly, Donald O'Conner and Debbie Reynolds is from: "Good morning, good morning. We talked the whole night through, good morning, good morning to you. Good morning, good morning. It's great to stay up late, good morning, good morning, to you."

Answer: Singin' in the Rain

"Singin' in the Rain" is listed at #10, making it the highest-ranked musical on AFI's list. It is definitely a classic! In my opinion, the highlight of the movie is the musical number "Make 'em Laugh", performed by Donald O'Conner. It will have anyone rolling in the aisles!
9. The star of this film had to gain a lot of weight to play boxer Jake LaMotta.

Answer: Raging Bull

Robert DeNiro had to put on pounds to portray LaMotta as an over-the-hill boxer, alcoholic and wife-beater during the second half of the movie.
10. Which film on the list features a man named Alvy who used to live under the Coney Island roller coaster, and enjoys the film "The Sorrow and the Pity", a four hour documentary about Nazis?

Answer: Annie Hall

Directed by and starring Woody Allen, "Annie Hall" examines the relationship between Allen and Diane Keaton and their many break-ups and make-ups. The movie was the first to use a montage to look back at a relationship and it also contained sequences where the actors would talk to the audience directly.
11. This song was made famous by a piano player named Sam, in AFI's second greatest movie, "Casablanca".

Answer: As Time Goes By

The song belonged to Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and was later sung by Frank Sinatra and other great jazz-type singers. The song epitomizes the mood of the film and the feelings of the characters toward each other.
12. #51 on the list, starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart tells the story of a socialite caught between men and marriages.

Answer: The Philadelphia Story

"The Philadelphia Story" is filled with humor and sharp wit, and could be considered ahead of its time because of its sexual innuendo and visible drunkenness. It was remade into a musical called "High Society" with Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra taking over the leads.
13. In which movie on our list would you find "The Walls of Jericho" and an infamous hitchhiking scene?

Answer: It Happened One Night

"It Happened One Night" set a precedent by winning Oscars in all 5 major categories, including Best Actor for Clark Gable and Best Actress for Claudette Colbert. The other three choices are all Hitchcock films that made the list.
14. In this film, Gary Cooper plays a retired sheriff trying to stop a rival gang from entering his town, without the help of the people or his Quaker wife, played by Grace Kelly.

Answer: High Noon

This was Kelly's first shot at acting and after watching her performance compared to Cooper's, she vowed that she would not accept another movie role until she took some acting lessons. It must have paid off because her later film roles proved that she had talent.
15. James Dean has two films on AFI's list. They are:

Answer: Giant and Rebel Without A Cause

Dean's first major movie, "East of Eden", did not make the list, but these two did. He had refused to attend the premiere of "Rebel Without a Cause", and died before "Giant" was released. His death was tragic and extremely untimely, as he was only 24 and had great talent. "A Streetcar Named Desire" starred Marlon Brando, but becuase Dean only made three movies, I had to add it to the choices.
