Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the 1985 movie about the tribes of the Amazon jungle starring Powers Boothe and Meg Foster and directed by John Boorman?

Answer: The Emerald Forest

An American engineer loses his son Tommy to the so-called Invisible People. After many years the father again finds the son who prefers to stay and live the lifestyle of the innocent tribesmen. However, the intervention of the Fierce People tribe creates a situation in which Tommy must seek his real father's help.
2. Who was the female star of the movie "Ruby Gentry" which was the tale of a girl brought up as a boy in the Carolina swamps and who lusts after one of the local aristocrats?

Answer: Jennifer Jones

The movie was directed by King Vidor and also starred Charlton Heston and Karl Malden. The character portrayed by Charlton Heston is the one that Ruby wanted. The character played by Karl Malden is the one that she married. Some people saw this film as a cynical remake of "Duel in the Sun".
3. What was the title of the British movie in which the detectives of Scotland Yard solve the murder of a coloured music student?

Answer: Sapphire

This movie was directed by Basil Dearden and starred popular 1950s British actors Nigel Patrick and Michael Craig. This is a police thriller which tackled racial issues in a very direct manner unusual for its release date of 1959.
4. There are several movies with diamonds in the title but which of the following stars Betty Grable and is about a nightclub singer who gives up her career for a medical student?

Answer: Diamond Horseshoe

This movie is also known as "Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe" and was adapted from a play by Kenyon Nicholson. Dick Haymes and Phil Silvers also play major roles and the songs are by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren.
5. Which of these is the correct description of the movie "Topaz" directed by Alfred Hitchcock?

Answer: The CIA enlist the aid of a French agent to break up a Russian spy ring.

The screenplay was taken from a novel by Leon Uris, but this is rarely regarded as one of Hitchcock's better films. Even the cast is relatively low-key and includes Frederick Stafford, John Forsythe and John Vernon.
6. Which famous female star of the 1930s was said to have been firmly established by her appearance in Frank Capra's "Platinum Blonde"?

Answer: Jean Harlow

The movie starred Robert Williams and Loretta Young and its plot was about a newpaper reporter who falls in love with and marries an heiress. Strangely enough Harlow plays the against type role of an upper class girl whilst Loretta Young is the hero's hard-working and down to earth buddy. Sadly, Williams died four days after the movie's release.
7. Lots of movies have "silver" in the title but which one is a western starring John Payne and Dan Duryea in which the entire town turns against a respected citizen upon his wedding day?

Answer: Silver Lode

"Silver Lode" is the name of the town and for the character portrayed by John Payne anything that can go wrong does go wrong. Dan Duryea plays the part of the man bent on revenge. Lizabeth Scott plays the part of the girl who has to choose whether to stand by her man.
8. There are at least 30 movies with the words "gold" or "golden" in the title. Which James Bond actor stars in the British movie which is simply called "Gold" and which is set in South Africa?

Answer: Roger Moore

The original book was written by Wilbur Smith and the movie was directed by Peter Hunt. Susannah York, Ray Milland, Bradford Dillman and John Gielgud are Roger Moore's co-stars. A lot of the action is set underground as you might expect when the hero is a mining engineer.
9. Who plays Sherlock Holmes in the movie entitled "The Pearl of Death" which is loosely based on Conan Doyle's story of "The Six Napoleons"?

Answer: Basil Rathbone

This is a story about the theft of a valuable pearl, but the introduction of a sinister character called "The Creeper" gives the movie an unexpected horror element. Nigel Bruce is once again the faithful Dr. Watson and Dennis Hoey plays his usual part of the bumbling Inspector Lestrade.
10. A British movie was made about a frigate that was trapped and shelled by the Communist Chinese. In the U.S.A. it was called "Escape of the Amethyst" or "Battle Hell" but what was the original title?

Answer: Yangtse Incident

The Amethyst is the last of our precious materials. The movie was based on a true incident in 1949 when H.M.S. Amethyst had to run the gauntlet to escape from the hostile troops on either side of the Yangtse river. It starred Richard Todd, William Hartnell and other stalwarts of the British acting profession.
