Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shirley's days as a housewife had become so monotonous that she was thrilled when her friend invited her along on a trip. When her family objected to Shirley taking the trip, she realized how much they took her for granted and determined that no matter what, she was going. Where did Shirley go on her trip, in "Shirley Valentine"?

Answer: Greece

After a chance encounter with a school friend reminded Shirley how adventurous she had been in her youth, she realized how differently her life was from what she had imagined it would be. This realization helped Shirley decide to take the trip whether her family liked it or not.

Not only did Shirley enjoy a fling with a charming Greek, her husband developed a new appreciation for her in her absence. Pauline Collins earned an Oscar nomination for her charming portrayal of a woman trying to find herself again. "Shirley Valentine" (1989) also starred Bernard Hill and Tom Conti. Collins also portrayed Shirley Valentine on the stage, for which she won a Tony award.
2. Shirley Jones, who appeared in several musicals in the 50s and 60s, played the beautiful young heroine in "Oklahoma!". What was the name of her character?

Answer: Laurey Williams

The story took place in the Oklahoma territory around the beginning of the 20th century. Our two leads, Laurey and Curly McLain (Gordon McRae), were dealing with outside interference to their budding romance, while singing about waving wheat and surreys with fringes. "Oklahoma!" (1955) starred Gloria Grahame, Rod Steiger and Charlotte Greenwood, and was Shirley Jones' movie debut.

She also starred in the musicals "Carousel" (1956) and "The Music Man" (1962), but it was her performance as prostitute Lulu Bains in "Elmer Gantry" (1960) which won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Her movie career aside, Shirley's probably best known for playing Shirley Partridge in the 1970s TV show "The Partridge Family".
3. Barbara and her soldier boyfriend, Phil, had planned to meet and be married in Mexico City during his brief leave from the Army. Unfortunately, Phil was delayed and Barbara left the train station before he arrived. Alone in a strange country, Barbara sought the assistance of the American consul, David Flanner, but ended up developing a crush on him, in "Honeymoon" (1947). Which Shirley played the part of Barbara in this cute romantic comedy?

Answer: Shirley Temple

Due to one funny situation after another, Barbara and Phil didn't actually marry until the end of the movie. Guy Madison played Barbara's intended, Phil, and Franchot Tone played the consul, David. Shirley Temple made other films as a young adult, including "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" (1947) and "That Hagen Girl" (1947), but is most remembered for the movies she made as a child in the 1930s. Shirley was so popular that many little girls born during the mid-1930s, including actresses Shirley Jones and Shirley MacLaine, were named after her.
4. Shirley Henderson played Bridget's friend, Jude, in "Bridget Jones's Diary", but what role did she play in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"?

Answer: Moaning Myrtle

Moaning Myrtle had been a student at Hogwarts when she was killed in the girls' lavatory by the Basilisk. As a ghost, the lavatory was where she spent her time, mostly crying. When their search for the entrance to the chamber of secrets led Harry and his friends to the lavatory, they met Myrtle, who eventually helped them in their quest.

Henderson also appeared as Myrtle in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005). Shirley played Jude (another character who cried in the bathroom) in both "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001) and "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" (2004), and has also appeared in "Trainspotting" (1996) and "Rob Roy" (1995).
5. Shirley Eckert (Candice Bergen) was an idealistic young teacher who went to China to work as a missionary in the late 1920s. She met and fell in love with a sailor who was stationed on the USS San Pablo, a gunboat which patrolled the Yangtze River. Which movie was this?

Answer: The Sand Pebbles

The sailor, Jake Holman (Steve McQueen in an Oscar-nominated performance), was the new engineer on the boat, whose work ethics didn't sit well with the rest of the crew. He wasn't looking for any ties, but found himself falling for the earnest young Shirley.

The eight Oscar nominations for "The Sand Pebbles" (1966) also included Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Mako. Candice Bergen played another Shirley, Shirley Schmidt, on the TV series "Boston Legal".
6. This Oscar-winning actress, who starred in "Executive Suite" and "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell", was born Shirley Schrift. By what name was she known?

Answer: Shelley Winters

Shirley Schrift, born in Missouri and raised in New York, was only a teenager when she first auditioned to be an understudy in a play. The secretary asked her to register with Equity, but didn't think her name was suitable for an actress. Together, Shirley and the secretary came up with Shelley Winter. Winter was her mother's maiden name, and Shelley was from her favorite poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Universal Studios later added the 's' to Winter.

Shelley was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for "A Place in the Sun" (1951), as well as for Best Supporting Actress for "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959), "A Patch of Blue" (1965) and "The Poseidon Adventure" (1975).

She won for both "A Patch of Blue" and "The Diary of Anne Frank". Shelley guested on an episode of "Chico and the Man" in 1975, playing a character named Shirley Schrift alongside her "Poseidon" husband Jack Albertson.
7. For which of these movies did Shirley MacLaine win a Best Actress Oscar?

Answer: Terms of Endearment

Shirley received Best Actress Oscar nominations for "Some Came Running" (1958), "The Apartment" (1960), "Irma la Douce" (1963), and "The Turning Point" (1977). She finally won the statuette as Best Actress for her witty portrayal of the no-nonsense Aurora Greenway in "Terms of Endearment" (1983).

While Aurora was uptight, her daughter Emma (Debra Winger) was a free spirit who eventually convinced her mother to loosen up and go out with the man next door, a former astronaut (Jack Nicholson). Both humorous and sad, "Terms of Endearment" earned eleven Oscar nominations, winning five of them including Best Picture.
8. Drag racer Shirley Muldowney overcame many obstacles on her way to winning a Top Fuel championship. Which actress played Shirley in the movie about her life, "Heart Like a Wheel" (1983)?

Answer: Bonnie Bedelia

Shirley displayed great determination, not only in entering a male-dominated sport, but in winning against the men. Leo Rossi played Shirley's husband, Jack; Beau Bridges played her mentor/boyfriend Connie Kalitta; and Anthony Edwards played Shirley's son, John. For her performance, Bonnie Bedelia earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
9. Which one of these Shirleys won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in "Come Back, Little Sheba"?

Answer: Shirley Booth

Better known for her Emmy award-winning role as Hazel in the 1960s TV series by the same name, Shirley Booth made her movie debut in "Come Back, Little Sheba", having previously played the role on the stage. With her Oscar win, she became the first actress to win both an Oscar and a Tony award for the same role.

In "Come Back, Little Sheba" (1952), Booth played Lola Delaney, a former beauty in an unhappy marriage who spent a lot of time dwelling on the past. The other Shirleys were all Oscar nominated: Shirley Knight was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1962) and "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" (1960); Anne Shirley earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for "Stella Dallas" (1937); and Shirley MacLaine was nominated for Best Actress for, among others, "Some Came Running" (1958).
10. Clark's boss, Frank Shirley, tried to save money by doing away with Christmas bonuses for his employees, in "Christmas Vacation" (1989). This didn't sit well with Clark, who already had plans for the bonus money. Who played Frank Shirley?

Answer: Brian Doyle-Murray

Having already put a down payment on the pool he was planning on putting in with his Christmas bonus, Clark finally flipped when he found out he was only getting a membership to the Jelly of the Month club. He mentioned that if anyone was looking for a last-minute gift idea for him, they could bring him his boss, with a big bow.

As it happened, Eddie was looking for something to give Clark, and before too long, Clark was presented with a kidnapped Frank Shirley (with a bow) by Eddie. Brian Doyle-Murray also appeared in "Vacation" (1983), playing the clerk at Kamp Komfort.
