Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the giant spider that appeared in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'?

Answer: Aragog

Aragog was originally Hagrid's pet spider but was framed by Tom Riddle for the murder of Moaning Myrtle at Hoqwarts. Hagrid helped Aragog escape to the Forbidden Forest. In 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', Harry and Ron followed Aragog's children into the Forbidden Forest and encountered Aragog who told them that he was not the monster who killed Myrtle and that Hagrid was innocent. Aragog's hungry spiderlings surrounded Harry and Ron intending to eat them but the boys were saved by the flying car.
2. The year after 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' was released another giant spider graced the silver screen in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'. What was Tolkien's spider called?

Answer: Shelob

'Shelob' is a combination of the word 'she' and the old English word 'loppe' which means spider. Shelob appeared at the end of the book 'The Two Towers' but didn't appear until the third part of the film trilogy. In 'The Return of the King', Gollum lured Frodo into Shelob's lair but Frodo managed to keep her at bay with the vial of Elendil given to him by Galadriel.

However Shelob attacked Frodo a second time and wrapped him in cobwebs. Sam arrived and fought Shelob with Frodo's sword, 'Sting' and managed to wound the spider and save Frodo.
3. In 1955 a science fiction film called 'Tarantula' told the story of a giant mutant tarantula terrorising the countryside. The tarantula is eventually killed by a fighter squadron dropping napalm on it. What actor played an uncredited role as a jet pilot in the movie?

Answer: Clint Eastwood

This is one of many spider films where a tarantula is cast as the villain, a Mexican red-rumped tarantula in this case. A movie poster of this film appeared in the movie 'Back to the Future III' where Marty adopts the name 'Clint Eastwood'. Clint Eastwood's acting career began in 1955 and 'Tarantula' was the fourth film he acted in.

This was the beginning of a commercially and critically acclaimed career as both an actor, producer and director. Some of his most memorable movies include 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', Dirty Harry', 'Letters from Iwo Jima', 'Million Dollar Baby', 'Mystic River' and 'Unforgiven'.
4. 1958 brought us yet another science fiction horror film with a giant tarantula terrorising a town. What was the title of this B grade movie?

Answer: Earth vs. the Spider

The film was released as 'Earth vs the Spider' but after the success of the movie 'The Fly' which was released in the same year, the name of the movie was changed on promotional material to 'The Spider'.
This spider was a Mexican redleg tarantula and it was killed by electrocution and a fall. A television film of the same name was made in 2001.
5. 1975 gave us the low budget film 'The Giant Spider Invasion' where the spiders terrorised the town of Merrill in a US state better known for its milk, butter and cheese production. What state was it?

Answer: Wisconsin

The biggest spider in the movie was made by covering a VW car in black fun fur. The red tail lights were used as the spider's glowing eyes and it needed six children inside to make the legs move as well as a driver. Some of the other spiders in the movie were puppets.
The spider invasion in the movie was caused by a meteorite crash and the spiders appeared to come through some kind of space portal. They were defeated when the portal was destroyed.
6. One of my favourite schlock spider movies has to be 'Kingdom of the Spiders', released in 1977. What enterprising actor played the lead role in this environmental horror story?

Answer: William Shatner

William Shatner starred in this movie along with more than 5000 tarantulas. These tarantulas were not oversized but were rapaciously hungry because their normal food sources had been destroyed by pesticides. The spiders started attacking animals and people to eat. The best part about this movie is the spiders win!
Willian Shatner is best known for his television roles as Captain James T. Kirk in 'Star Trek', and Denny Crane in 'Boston Legal'.
7. 1990 brought us the movie 'Arachnophobia' where an army of spiders terrorise yet another small town. What multi award winning film director was one of the executive producers of this comedy horror?

Answer: Steven Spielberg

374 brown huntsman spiders, also known as Avondale spiders, were used in the movie. This spider is native to Australia but was accidentally introduced to New Zealand where it was originally found in the suburb of Avondale in Auckland. The spiders in the movie were from New Zealand and were chosen because they are relatively large and look scary.
In the film, a deadly spider was accidentally brought back to California from the Amazon. It mated with another spider creating soldier spiders which attacked the townsfolk.
Steven Spielberg has directed, written and produced some of the most iconic American films since the 1970s, including 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', 'ET', the 'Indiana Jones' series and the 'Jurassic Park' trilogy.
8. It seems Hollywood just can't stay away from giant spiders and 2002 brought us the comedy horror 'Eight Legged Freaks'. The lead actor has a strong horror film pedigree having starred in the 'Scream' film series. Who is he?

Answer: David Arquette

"Eight Legged Freaks' had a working title of 'Arac Attack' but after the September 11 terrorist attacks on US soil the producers decided it sounded too much like 'Iraq Attack' and changed it to 'Eight Legged Freaks'.
David Arquette is an actor, director, producer, screen writer, fashion designer and professional wrestler. He has appeared in a number of movies and t.v. shows and is married to Courteney Cox.
9. We can't have a quiz about spiders in movies without mentioning 'Spider-Man'. What type of spider was Peter Parker bitten by in the 2002 movie?

Answer: A genetically altered spider

Peter is a high school student who was bitten by a genetically altered spider on a field trip to a genetics lab. When he woke up the next day he discovered that he had developed some spider traits. He had brand new muscles, perfect vision, great relexes and the ability to produce cobwebs from his wrists.

He was able to develop more spider abilities such as being able to scuttle up the side of buildings and travel by web but he didn't attempt to eat flies. In the comic book Peter was bitten by an irradiated spider.
10. Just to prove that not all spiders are nasty, let's have a question about a selfless spider. What was the name of the spider who saved the life of Wilbur the pig by writing words such as 'Terrific' and 'Radiant' in her web above his sty?

Answer: Charlotte

'Charlotte A. Cavatica' is the spider who starred in the movie 'Charlotte's Web' based on the book of the same name by E.B. White. There have been two films made - an animated version in 1973 and a live action film in 2006.
