Aspiring actress Sarah is trying to make it in Hollywood, and between auditioning for roles and screwing up with each casting call and working a job at a lousy fast food restaurant, it's difficult. She struggles to keep herself going, especially since she's immensely hard on herself; in moments of frustration she pulls out her own hair.

Despite the difficulty behind nabbing a good audition, she continues to spend time with her more successful friends, some of whom are really horrible, and look optimistically at a dream that could really take a toll.

Answer: The Silver Scream

Sarah gets accepted for her 'Silver Scream' audition while she's at a party and while some of her friends balk at the title, she still prepares herself. One night, she has a horrible nightmare about how poorly the audition could go; she even starts bleeding from her scalp partway through it.

The audition comes along soon enough and she reads for the role of Celeste in front of a casting director who seems a bit strict and on-the-nose about her prospects. Sarah tries to make her case and hits her lines, but she gets the cold 'we'll be in touch' that so many get.

Answer: Rip her hair out

On the way out from her audition, Sarah lets her head get to her in the restroom. After tearing up her headshot and screaming in a bathroom stall, she begins to tear at her hair agin...only this time she realizes that she was doing so in front of her casting director.

The woman says that perhaps they didn't see everything they wanted to from her after all and they bring her back in for a follow-up. Sarah somewhat admits that she punished herself for her audition and the casting directors want to see another fit...so she does it, much to the delight of the casting agent.

She gets the 'we'll be in touch' again, but there's something different this time.

Answer: Disrobing

Sarah gets a callback at work for her second audition and she's immediately reamed out by her boss for answering her cell phone at work. Instead of continuing to work at the restaurant, she decides to quit to pursue her dream. Sarah ends up heading out to her second audition which, to be fair, is a lot more unconventional.

This time, the casting directors ask her to disrobe. They've already seen Sarah memorize lines and they know she can, they explain, so they need to see her bare. Knowing the films that have been made by the company she's auditioning for, she hesitates, but acquiesces. That's when things get really weird.

The lights begin to flash in the room and, while in the dark, she sees odd figures in the shadows. They ask her to let herself go so that she can transform and when she does, she finds herself giving in.

After this audition, she realizes that the casting director is wearing a pentacle.

Returning from her second audition, Sarah feels great about her prospects. She ends up coming into a party with all of her friends over the moon with how it went, but things take a turn for the weird when one of her friends accidentally slips next to the pool and breaks her nose. For some reason, Sarah can't help but laugh. That night, she has horrifying dreams. Soon, she's called to a third audition (in the middle of the night) with the film's producer at Astraeus.

When she arrives she's led up to the producer's office and told that there are high hopes for her and the film. If she has ambition, it's an amazing opportunity. Sarah is told that they want to offer her the role. That said, for this audition, she will be required to do what she wants to get what she wants. That's when they proposition her for sex.

She draws the line and leaves, forgetting about the role, at least for a little while.

Answer: The producer

Sarah resumes her old life, retaking her old job and joining her friend's movie crew when her roommate checks in on her and tells the others about what happened. During a pool party, Sarah takes some drugs and spots her friends hooking up in the water and, seeing this, she decides to return to Astraeus and dive headlong into what's expected of her to get the role, compromising her beliefs to achieve the stardom she really wants.

She realizes that she can't just keep dreaming; she needs to do what she needs to do to reach the top. And she doesn't notice the cultists that emerge when she meets with the producer either. Things take a sharp turn soon after, and there's no turning back. So begins her new life.

Sarah loses her job at the restaurant again, and much like after her second audition, she begins to change her demeanour. As she becomes racked with pain and repeatedly falls in and out of dazes, Sarah starts to become detached and despondent, even around her friends. During one night out, Sarah lashes out at her best friend, Tracy, and tries to perform a striptease for the camera.

She ends up outside Astraeus Pictures, screaming into the doors that she did what they asked. After attacking a homeless man, she heads home, realizing how ill she really is.

Answer: Embrace who she must become

Sarah's physical and mental state continues to deteriorate in the coming days. Before long she and Tracy have a major argument, but by then she's already losing her hair in big clumps. She also starts vomiting and having trouble eating any food. Not long after that, Sarah has a dream in which she, now donning a pentacle herself, appears to be a glamorous movie star like she always wanted. Soon after she's shown a vision of herself in which she, needing to crawl to the bathroom to throw up again, ends up withering away in the bathroom, shedding her hair and nails and bleeding from every orifice. Crawling into the bathtub, she begins to vomit live maggots. Sarah, seeking help, crawls to the phone next and the producer from Astraeus is already on the line.

He tells her that there are two choices for her: she can die as she already seems to be or she can be reborn. Dreams require sacrifice, and she needs to embrace who she must become if she wants to get the role she seeks.

Answer: Steals her life force

Sarah realizes what she must do and she starts by going to her friend Erin's house. There, she finds Erin back in Danny's van and waits for her to come inside the house. The two of them argue in the kitchen before Sarah attacks Erin's face with a knife, cutting her deep. Sarah realizes what she's done, but a voice encourages her to continue slicing.

She later has to finish her off, suffocating her with a plastic grocery bag. She proceeds to the bedroom to kill her other friends, stabbing one in the back and beating the other one with a dumbbell.

She goes out to Danny's van and turns the knife on him as well. Returning home after all is said and done, after she's embraced her transformation, she also kills her roommate, Tracy, kissing her and taking her life force from her.

After her murder spree, Sarah is collected by the Astraeus cultists who, dressed in their finery, perform a cult ritual around an illuminated pentagram. Sarah emerges from a thin cocoon the next morning, somewhere overlooking Hollywood, and pulls herself from the ground having been reborn. Next to her is a box labeled 'Happy Birthday'.
She returns home, now hairless, but with sharp and healthy nails, and when she opens the gift she finds a glamorous dress and wig. Looking in the mirror and donning a pentacle necklace, she realizes she's achieved her dreams.
