Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The decade begins with this number one hit by a European band. 1970s "Venus" was recorded by whom?

Answer: Shocking Blue

Billboard number one, February 7, 1970. Formed in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1967, this was originally an all-male group, but never took off until a female lead singer named Mariska Veres joined the group. Hers is the voice you hear on this song. It was also widely alleged at the time, although never definitively stated, that the band spoke no English, and sang the song phonetically for American audiences.
2. This lady had a number one hit in 1971. Who sang "(I Never Promised You) A Rose Garden"?

Answer: Lynn Anderson

Billboard number one, February 13, 1971. Best known for this song which won her a Grammy in 1971, Anderson is one of the top country recording artists of all time. Still performing as of 2008, Anderson has had eight number one records, over 50 Top 40 hits on the country charts, as well as 17 Gold albums.

This was the only time, however, that she was able the crack the Billboard Pop Top 40.
3. In 1972 "Sunshine" was a Top 10 hit for this guy. Who recorded this folksy hit tune?

Answer: Jonathan Edwards

Billboard number four, January 15, 1972. Originally from Minneapolis, Edwards found success after his schooling in the Boston area, as a folk singer. This song was written in 1971, and earned Edwards a Gold record. Edwards continues to write and perform today, but "Sunshine" remains his only Top 40 success.
4. "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?" made the Top 10 in 1973. What guy penned and recorded it?

Answer: Hurricane Smith

Billboard number three, February 17, 1973. Born Norman Smith, this British musician and producer actually had gained fame (and fortune) a lot earlier, as the engineer for almost 180 Beatles songs produced by EMI music up until 1965. He later worked with Pink Floyd as well. He passed away in March 2008.
5. "Seasons In The Sun" topped the charts in 1974 for this north of the border act. Who was it?

Answer: Terry Jacks

Billboard number one, March 2, 1974. Jacks is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Although once a member of "The Poppy Family" (with fellow musician Susan Pesklevits whom he later married), Jacks recorded this hit under his own name after both the Poppy Family and the marriage dissolved. Terry had originally worked with The Beach Boys on this song, but recorded it on his own.

This song became the largest selling single in Canadian history at that time.
6. In 1975, "Lovin You" shot to the top of the charts for this sultry singer. Name her.

Answer: Minnie Riperton

Billboard number one, April 5, 1975. Riperton was born in 1947. She sang backup for such acts as Etta James, Muddy Waters, Fontella Bass and Ramsey Lewis among others. We'll never know if she could have gotten off the one hit wonders list. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 28, and passed away at age 31 in 1979. One interesting note.

She had two children, one son and one daughter. The daughter goes by the name of Maya Rudolph. Yes, from "Saturday Night Live".
7. 1976 saw "Love Hurts" become a Top 10 smash. Which of these groups was responsible?

Answer: Nazareth

8. 1977 began with this song by an oddly named band. Who went Top 40 with "Whispering/Cherchez La Femme/C'est Si Bon" that year?

Answer: Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band

Billboard number 27, January 29, 1977. Formed in the Bronx, New York in the mid 70s, this band was considered a combination of swing, big band, and disco. The song topped the Dance charts as well, and the act would perform at many famous dance clubs in the area including the legendary "Studio 54". Later after the group disbanded, some members formed a new band that you may have heard of, called Kid Creole and The Coconuts.
9. The novelty song "Short People" just missed getting the number one spot in 1978 for this singer/ songwriter. Who was he?

Answer: Randy Newman

He has written the music scores for such varied films as "Ragtime", "The Natural", "Toy Story", "Meet The Parents" and "Seabiscuit". This song was so controversial that someone in Maryland tried to get a law passed that year to make it illegal to play it on the air.
10. This cover version of "Knock On Wood", with a disco flair, went to the top of the charts in 1979. Who had this success?
