Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1982 Dire Straits song, which alludes to the inhumanity of working nine-to-five, may hint at another malaise with this lyric "Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze"?

Answer: Industrial Disease

The song was released as a single in the USA, by the band as a promotion of its album "Love Over Gold". With its talk of strikes and dysfunctionality, it, initially, laments the decline of Great Britain's manufacturing industries before becoming a metaphor for the nine-to-five routine that was sucking out the human in humans. The writer, Mark Knopfler, includes a sly reference to one of the first bands that he and Pick Withers were involved in, Brewer's Droop.

This question was coughed into life by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
2. ELO breathed life into their first US Top Ten single in 1974 which featured the lyric "Now my whole world is gone for dead". Which single was it?

Answer: Can't Get It Out of my Head

Written by Jeff Lynne, "Can't Get It Out of My Head" is off their fourth album, "Eldorado" released in 1974. While it reached number nine on the Billboard charts in the US, it failed to chart well in the UK until 1978, when it was re-released as part of their four-track "ELO EP".

This question was resuscitated by Phoenix Rising's leith90.
3. "So let us not talk falsely now" are lyrics from "All Along the Watchtower" which was made famous by Jimi Hendrix. Who wrote the original song that Jimi covered?

Answer: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan originally released "All Along the Watchtower" as part of his 1968 album "John Wesley Harding". Six months after Dylan released his version, Hendrix released his version which would become a top twenty hit in the US and a top five hit in the UK. Dylan liked Hendrix's version so much he adopted it as his own. Over the years Hendrix's version has grown in popularity and critical praise.

This question was originally written by Phoenix Rising member pollucci19 but then covered by tazman6619. Tazman6619's take on the question subsequently gained great notoriety and surpassed pollucci19's version.
4. Which words (they're the song's title) complete this lyric from a Shirelles' 1961 hit? "There'll be days like this, my ___"

Answer: Mama said

Billboard, responsible for a range of music charts in the United States, once listed "Mama Said" at number forty four on their list of Greatest Songs by All Girl Groups. For the Shirelles the single would reach the Top Ten on a number of charts across the globe, peaking at number four on Billboard's Hot 100. The song was written by Luther Dixon and Willie Denson, both of whom worked closely with the Shirelles in their early days. The song also became the inspiration for Van Morrison's 1995 single "Days Like This", which, in turn, became the official anthem of the peace movement in Northern Ireland.

This question was written by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19, who doesn't talk much.
5. The lyrics "It's kinda funny how life can change, can flip 180 in a matter of days" are from the song "One Love" by which British boy band?

Answer: Blue

The song "One Love" was the lead single from Blue's second studio album, also called "One Love". The song was released on October 21, 2002 in the UK, reaching number three on the UK Singles chart. The album and the three singles released from it sold over five million copies.

This question came out of the blue, leaving Phoenix Rising member tazman6619 pondering the meaning of love-struck.
6. The following lyric, "You're over there when I need you here," is from the 2000 single "My Happiness", released by which band that took its name from a Neil Young song?

Answer: Powderfinger

"My Happiness" is rated as Powderfinger's most successful single, reaching the Top Ten on the Australian Aria charts, the New Zealand charts and making it to number twenty three on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. While promoting the single and the album that it was on, "Odyssey Number 5", in the United States, they were invited to perform the song on the David Letterman Show. At the time they were only the fourth Australian act to do so. The song is often mistaken for a love song, which bemused its lyricist, Bernard Fanning, who wrote it to reflect his loneliness when on the road promoting their work.

With the presentation of this question Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19 managed to become blissfully unaware.
7. The lyric, "We are but a moment's sunlight, fading in the grass" was part of a 1960s hit. Come on people now, smile - you should know this one - who was the band?

Answer: The Youngbloods

The song "Get Together" was a 1967, Top 40 hit for The Youngbloods and in 2001 was included in a list of "lyrically questionable" songs generated by US media conglomerate Clear Channel Communication (now iHeartMedia) after the September 11 attacks. Seems silly, especially in this case, since the chorus is all about coming together and loving one another.

Phoenix Rising team member mike32768 manages to smile once in a while, even to his brothers.
8. "Let's get together to fight this Holy Armageddon," urge Bob Marley & The Wailers. What brotherly concept were they trying to promote, which incidentally is the title of the song?

Answer: One Love

In the song "One Love", Bob Marley & The Wailers encouraged people to be united regardless of their differences for the sake of peace. "One Love" incorporated parts of another song, "People Get Ready" by The Impressions, and this was reflected in a later release of the song when it was titled "One Love/People Get Ready".

This question was lovingly created by Phoenix Rising member purelyqing.
9. "Do you think what I'm askin's too much?" is a lyric from a hit single and album of the same name by Bruce Springsteen in 1992. What is the name of the song the lyric is from?

Answer: Human Touch

"Human Touch" and "Lucky Town" were both released on March 31 1992 with "Human Touch" being the more successful of the two. It peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and sold over one million copies. The album was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards.

The album is one of Mr Springsteen's fans' least favourite as the songs are generally upbeat and positive in outlook, a stark contrast to his previous albums. During his acceptance speech, following his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, Mr Springsteen acknowledged his father's influence on the tone of these early works; "because what would I conceivably have written about without him? I mean, you can imagine that if everything had gone great between us, we would have had disaster. I would have written just happy songs - and I tried it in the early '90s and it didn't work..." The last sentence is a reference to the songs on "Human Touch".

The single from which the lyric above is taken, unlike the album, had more success, reaching number one in three European countries and number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100.

This question was assimilated from 1nn1 who was thankful for Fun Trivia for providing a meaningful endeavour whilst practising social distancing.
10. The lyrics "In the end it's the fight that's just begun" come from which 2015 Ella Eyre song?

Answer: Together

"Together" was the third single released from Ella Eyre's debut album "Feline". It peaked at number 12 on the UK charts. Ella is known more for her collaborations than as a solo artist. Her biggest hits include "Waiting All Night" with Rudimental, "Gravity" with DJ Fresh, and "Bridge over Troubled Water" as part of Artists for Grenfell the charity song.

And so it is time to build our song "A Song of Hope".

VERSE 1
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
Now my whole world has gone for dead
So let us not talk falsely now
There'll be days like this, mama said

CHORUS
It's kinda funny how life can change, can flip 180 in a matter of days
You're over there when I need you here

VERSE 2
We are but a moment's sunlight, fading in the grass
Let's get together to fight this Holy Armageddon
Do you think what I'm askin's too much
In the end it's the fight that's just begun
