Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stevie Wonder leads all artists listed under 'W', topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart ten times. As of 2018, which group were second on that list, with six number ones?

Answer: Wings

Formed by Paul McCartney after The Beatles' breakup, and known originally as Paul McCartney and Wings, they topped the U.S. singles chart six times between 1973 and 1980. Next amongst artists listed under 'W' are Kayne West (with four) and the groups Wham! and Wilson Pickett (each with three).
2. Bananarama topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1986 with their cover version of "Venus". It had previously been a number one hit for rock band Shocking Blue in 1970. From which country did Shocking Blue come?

Answer: The Netherlands

Formed in The Hague in 1967, they were known particularly for their psychedelic rock and sold more than 13.5 million records before disbanding in 1974. Strangely, the Netherlands was one of the few countries in which "Venus" did not top the charts for them (it reached number three). They scored their only Dutch number one in 1970 with "Never Marry a Railroad Man".
3. The three members of which pop group starred alongside Frankie Howerd, Paul Nicholas and Donald Pleasence in the 1978 rock opera film "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"?

Answer: The Bee Gees

The Gibb brothers played Mark, David and Bob Henderson in the band fronted by Billy Shears' (played by singer/guitarist Peter Frampton) band. Members of Aerosmith, Earth Wind & Fire and Alice Cooper also appeared in the film based on the classic Beatles album.
4. Wotan, King of the Gods, his wife Fricka, her siblings Freia, Donner and Froh, the goddess Erda, along with mortals Siegmund, Sieglinde, King Gunther and his sister Gutrune, and the shieldmaiden Brynhildr, are characters in the major operatic work by which composer?

Answer: Richard Wagner

'Der Ring des Nibelungen' ("The Ring of the Nibelung") is a cycle of four operas designed to be seen in sequence. Written over 26 years between 1848 and 1874, they were first performed in their entirety at the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in Germany in 1876. The city continues to host the annual Wagner Festival today.
5. According to the song, how long is the Camptown Race Track?

Answer: Five Miles

The opening stanza of the 19th-century minstrel song is:
"Camptown ladies sing dis song,
Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Camptown race-track five miles long,
Oh, doo-dah day!"
The song was written in 1850 by American songwriter Stephen Foster, who is widely acknowledged as the "father of American music".
6. With which single did Michael Jackson first top a major chart as a solo artist?

Answer: Ben

His first two solo singles were Top five hits on both sides of the Atlantic (including "Rockin' Robin", which reached number two in the US and number three in the UK). "Ben" was his first number one, topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week in 1972 when he was 14.
It was another seven years before he again topped the U.S. chart, with "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" from the "Off the Wall" album. In 1981, he scored his first U.K. number one, with "One Day in Your Life". A year later, "Thriller" was released!
7. Elephant's Memory, a rock band formed in New York City in 1967, became the backing band for which singer though the early-mid 1970s.

Answer: John Lennon

The band earned a gold disc for their contribution to the soundtrack of the classic 1969 film "Midnight Cowboy". They were billed as the Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band on the 1972 Lennon/Ono album "Some Time in New York City" and on 1970s tours with John and Yoko.

Of the other three, Morrison died in 1971, Bolan in 1977, Moon in 1978.
9. Which 1971 single gave the Wolverhampton glam rock band Slade their first U.K. number ones?

Answer: Coz I Luv You

Written by vocalist Noddy Holder and bass player Jimmy Lea, it topped the U.K. singles chart for four weeks in November/December 1971. The last of their six number one singles was what is perennial favorite song, "Merry Xmas Everybody", in December 1973.
