Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What common room in a house completes this song title from the album Abbey Road: "She Came in Through the ____________ Window"?

Answer: Bathroom

The tune is reputedly based on a real incident (or series of incidents) of fans who broke into McCartney's home on Cavendish Avenue in London.

Joe Cocker did an amazing cover version of the tune on his self-titled second album.
2. What ditty from the "Sgt. Pepper" album features McCartney "filling the cracks that ran though the door" and "painting my room in a colorful way"?

Answer: Fixing A Hole

It was pretty much a solo McCartney effort; he wrote the song, sang lead and played the harpsichord. Harrison played the guitar solo. Rumors that the song is actually about drug use, heroin specifically, are wildly unfounded.
3. What fairy-tale inspired song from "The Beatles" makes mention of a playroom, parlour and a kitchen?

Answer: Cry Baby Cry

The tune was written by Lennon who sings all the verses with Paul and George joining him for the chorus. The tune features Beatles' producer George Martin on harmonium.

The theming and verse structure are reminiscent of the nursery rhyme "Sing A Song Of Sixpence". In Lennon's last interview with "Playboy" magazine he referred to the track as a "piece of rubbish".
4. The storied Rocky Raccoon had "booked himself a room at the local saloon". What did he discover when he checked in?

Answer: Gideon's bible

The tune was written in India with the assistance of John Lennon and musician Donovan.

Paul sings solo and swaps with George Harrison on lead guitar. Interestingly, Harrison also plays bass guitar on this track. Lennon contributed the harmonium with producer George Martin on honky tonk piano.

"Beatle-philes" know that the original title was "Rocky Sassoon".
5. What sad, poetic number from "Sgt. Pepper" includes the lyrics, "Silently closing her bedroom door, leaving the note that she hoped would say more"?

Answer: She's Leaving Home

Paul composed most of the music and lyrics. The song was inspired by a true story McCartney had read in "The Daily Mail". The lead vocal is shared by Paul and John, who sing as a quartet. Their two voices were recorded twice to make four.

One very interesting note about this song is that The Beatles are not heard instrumentally at all. The harp and strings were scored by Mike Leander to form the musical accompaniment.

Also, neither "Polythene Pam", "For No One" nor "Eleanor Rigby" are from the "Sgt. Pepper" album.
6. What song recorded by The Beatles, but written by musical icon Carl Perkins, includes the lyric "fifteen women knocking on my door"?

Answer: Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby

George Harrison took lead vox on this tune where he sings solo and is double-tracked in places. "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" was the third Perkins tune recorded by The Fab Four after "Matchbox" and "Honey Don't".
7. Early in their carer The Fab Four recorded the blues chestnut "Shake, Rattle and Roll". The lyrics instruct that you should "get out in the _________ and shake those pots and pans". To which room in a house does the song refer?

Answer: Kitchen

This rollicking blues staple was written in 1954 by Jesse Stone and was recorded by many artists including Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley.
8. What cryptic song from "Rubber Soul" by John Lennon has the main character "crawl(ing) off to sleep in the bath"?

Answer: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

John had many times admitted that this song was the tale of an affair he'd had with a woman whilst married to Cynthia. It was written at Lennon's Kenwood home. It is widely known that this was the first "pop" song to feature the Indian sitar.
9. What UK album included the song "When I Get Home"?

Answer: A Hard Day's Night

The song appears on the UK release of "A Hard Day's Night" but also appears on the conveniently re-packaged (Capitol) album "Something New". It was written by Lennon who takes lead vocal with McCartney and Harrison providing harmonies.
10. What is the only song in The Beatles' catalogue of music to reference "downstairs", "upstairs" and a "hall"?

Answer: A Day in the Life

This song is the result of Lennon and McCartney's compositional prowess at its best. The tune is actually two songs put together, one by each half of the songwriting duo.

John sang/wrote the first and last parts with McCartney's contributions in the middle.

Lennon's references include the lyrical notation, "Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall". Paul's contribution to this quiz includes the lines, "Found my way downstairs and drank a cup" and "Found my way upstairs and had a smoke".
