Help! It's A Hard Days' Night! Quiz

The Beatles are not my favourite music group (that would probably be André Rieu's orchestra), but I chose to write a quiz on their songs nevertheless. All these songs reach number one in the UK charts.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to one of the Beatles' song titles, what is all you need?

Answer: Love

"All You Need is Love" was recorded in 1967 and first performed on an international broadcast in which the producers visited several studios in various countries. The refrain is quite clear: "All you need is love - Love is all you need".
The lyrics were written by John Lennon with the collaboration of Paul McCartney. The music starts with the first notes of the French national hymn ("La Marseillaise"), and in the ending fade-out one can recognise (among others) "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller, the English traditional "Greensleeves" and a composition by JS Bach.
The Beatles had "A Little Help from Their Friends" for the broadcast: several famous musicians filled in the backing vocals. Guest artists included Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from the Rollin' Stones, Eric Clapton, Keith Moon (The Who), Marianne Faithful...
While the red herrings are all important, the Beatles never recorded a song titled "All You Need Is" Luck, Family or Health.
2. The discography of the Beatles has many song titles containing the word "Love". Which of these is a correct Beatles' title?

Answer: Can't Buy Me Love

Paul McCartney wrote the lyrics to "Can't Buy Me Love". In this song from 1964 the Beatles state they'll be satisfied if you "say you don't need no diamond ring".
Once again, the lyrics are spot on. Sometimes people think money is the answer to everything, but "money can't buy me love".
The red herrings were other number one hits in the UK. Soft Cell sang "Tainted Love" in 1981, Frankie Goes To Hollywood had a hit in 1984 with "The Power of Love" and Take That scored with the Bee Gees' cover "How Deep Is Your Love" in 1996.
3. Many songs by the Beatles carry girl's names. Which of these songs had none of the Beatles playing any instrument, as the music is played by two classical string quartets?

Answer: Eleanor Rigby

"Eleanor Rigby" is, as the lyrics point out, a tribute to "All the Lonely People". In the first strophe, we hear that Eleanor is indeed a lonely woman, as she "picks up the rice // In the church where a wedding has been". In the last strophe, Eleanor dies and "Nobody came" to her funeral. Only "Father MacKenzie" is "wiping the dirt // from his hands as he walks from the grave". Could anyone be more lonely?
Paul McCartney, who wrote the lyrics, stated he just invented the name. But on a cemetery in Liverpool a grave was discovered with the name of Eleanor Rigby, and a bit further there is a grave with the name of McKenzie. Maybe Paul once read these tombstones and came years later to use the names.
"Amazing Grace" is a traditional, performed (among others) by Elvis Presley and by Joan Baez. The Rollin' Stones recorded "Ruby Tuesday". One of the early songs by Pink Floyd is "Julia Dream".
4. Which of the following song titles was inspired by Ringo Starr?

Answer: A Hard Days' Night

The Beatles worked together on five movies. The first of these movies "A Hard Day's Night" was meant as a description of a typical day in the life of the band on tour. After many shots were taken, Ringo Starr sighed "It's been a hard day" and then, as he realised it was already after sunset, "...night." The movie director Dick Lester found this so funny he used it to rename the movie.
The songs used in the movie were also recorded on an album with the same title, and the first song on this album has the same title too. The text is quite simple: "It's been a hard days' night // and I been working like a dog" ... but as the singer comes home to his beloved, she "will make me feel alright."
"I Am the Walrus" was inspired by one of Lewis Carroll's poems. "Johnny B. Goode" is a Beatles' cover of a song originally recorded by Chuck Berry. The song title "Helter Skelter" may be inspired by a type of amusement park ride, or by a 1949 romantic comedy movie in which a radio star falls in love with a rich heiress.
5. Which Beatles' song starts with the lines "When I was younger, so much younger than today"?

Answer: Help

"When I was younger, so much younger than today // I never needed anybody's help in any way". But now the singer makes indeed an appeal: "Help me, if you can, I'm feeling down // and I do appreciate you being 'round // help me get my feet back on the ground // won't you please, please help me?"
John Lennon wrote the lyrics to this song. The title was also used for an album and a movie from 1965 - the second Beatles' movie, after "A Hard Days' Night".
"Hey Bulldog" starts with "Sheepdog, standing in the rain". "Lucy" starts with "Picture yourself in a boat on a river". "Michelle, ma belle // These are words that go together well" is the start of the song "Michelle", in which part of the lyrics are in French.
6. Which of these songs was the first Beatles' release for Apple Records?

Answer: Hey Jude

Of these songs, only "Hey Jude" is a Beatles' title. Paul McCartney wrote the music and the lyrics at the time when John Lennon was divorcing his first wife Cynthia for Yoko Ono. Unconfirmed sources point to the hypothesis Paul wrote the song for John's son Julian.
The lyrics are well known: "Hey Jude, don't make it bad // Take a sad song and make it better".
"Those Were the Days" was one of the songs recorded by Mary Hopkin. Ronnie Spector (wife of Phil Spector) sang "Try Some, Buy Some". "That's the Way God Planned It" was sung by Billy Preston. All these artists worked with one or more of the Beatles. For instance, George Harrison was the producer for Ronnie Spector and for Billy Preston.
7. Which of these songs describes the troubles of a mother during six out of the seven days of the week?

Answer: Lady Madonna

"Lady Madonna" is apparently not in the position to save money for her retirement. "Wonder how you manage to make ends meet // Who finds the money when you pay the rent?"
The song sketches everyday events on each day of the week, except Saturday. Most events are troublesome, for instance "Thursday night your stocking needed mending".
Paul McCartney wrote the music and most of the lyrics, with John Lennon helping him out in some places.
Neither of the red herrings mention a specific weekday.
8. On April 4, 1964 something happened for the first time: one single musical act occupied the top 5 positions on the American Billboard Hot 100. Fifty years later no one has equalled this feat. Which of their songs was number three?

Answer: She Loves You

"Can't Buy Me Love" was number one on April 4, 1964. Coming up in second place was "Twist and Shout", the only Beatles cover that ever made it to number one on the UK charts. The third place was "She Loves You", followed immediately by "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Please, Please Me".
The refrain of the correct answer is pretty straightforward: "She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah". Reading through the lyrics, I find that the Beatles give advice to a certain man who quarrelled with his wife, and now needs some instigation to make up again.
"Glass Onion", "Sun King" and "Rocky Raccoon" are some 1968 Beatles' songs that didn't reach the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 nor the top of the UK charts.
9. Which song starts with "I think I'm gonna be sad // I think it's today, yeah // The girl that's driving me mad // Is going away"?

Answer: Ticket to Ride

"Ticket to Ride" (1965) was once again a great success for the Beatles. The first strophe (quoted in the question) is followed by the refrain "She's got a ticket to ride // She's got a ticket to ride // She's got a ticket to ride // But she don't care."
All the red herrings start with the title words.
10. If your name is Salvador Dali, you could try to paint what the lyrics describe. If not, such a painting would probably not make any sense. Which song describes "a sea of green"?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

The lyrics start out quite realistically, but then follow the lines "So we sailed up to the sun // Till we found a sea of green // And we lived beneath the waves // In a yellow submarine". Paul McCartney wrote the lyrics, intended for a children's audience. And Ringo Starr was the lead singer, which didn't happen quite often: John Lennon and Paul McCartney did the lead vocals on most of the Beatles' songs.
The red herrings were a few of the other songs where Ringo Starr took the lead vocals. None of these has such bizarre lines as "a sea of green".
