Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the #10 hit for the year 1970? "Now that you're gone, All that's left is a band of gold. All that's left of the dream I hold, Is a band of gold, And the memories of what love could be, If you are still here with me."

Answer: Band of Gold

Freda Payne started her singing career doing jingles for radio commercials. From there she moved into singing back up for many incredible performers, including Pearl Bailey, Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. "Band of Gold", written by Dunbar and Wayne, was her biggest hit, recorded for Holland/Dozier/Holland (Motown's dynamite writing team) when they were starting their own record label.
2. What was the #9 song for the year 1970? "You and I must make a pact, we must bring salvation back. Where there is love, I'll be there. I'll reach out my hand to you, I'll have faith in all you do. Just call my name and I'll be there. I'll be there to comfort you, Build my world of dreams around you, I'm so glad that I found you. I'll be there with a love that's strong, I'll be your strength, I'll keep holding on."

Answer: I'll Be There

Discovered and signed by Motown in 1968, The Jackson Five didn't really take off until 1970, but when they took off, they were huge.
In 1970, when Michael was just 11 years old, they had 4 top ten hits. "I'll Be There" was the fourth one of these hits.
Do I get any bonus points for refraining from making any bad jokes about Michael?
3. What was the #8 hit of the year 1970? "Never met a girl could make me feel the way that you do. (You're alright.) Whenever I'm asked what makes a my dreams real, I tell 'em you do. (You're outta' sight.) Well twiddley dee, twiddley dum, Look out baby 'cause here I come. I'm bringing you a love that's true, Get ready, get ready. Start makin' love to you, Get ready, get ready."

Answer: Get Ready

Although written by Smokey Robinson and originally recorded by The Temptations, "Get Ready" (with slightly different lyrics) was a much bigger hit for Rare Earth. Rare Earth had the distinction of being one of the very few "blue-eyed" bands signed by Motown.
4. What was the #7 hit for the year 1970? "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness, She is standing right in front of me, Speaking words of wisdom, let it be."

Answer: Let It Be

Written by McCartney, "Let It Be" was recorded during the filming of the documentary movie of the same name. Although "Abbey Road" was the last album that the Beatles recorded, "Let It Be" was the last album, and single, that was released at the time of the split. Years later the three remaining Beatles would do some polishing of some of Lennon's recordings, and release "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love".
5. What was the #6 hit for the year 1970? "Just remember what I told you, The day I set you free. Ain't no mountain high enough, Ain't no valley low enough, Ain't no river wide enough, To keep me from you."

Answer: Ain't No Mountain High Enough

Diana Ross and the Supremes made their last appearance together on Jan. 14, 1970. Shortly after that, Diana Ross embarked on her solo singing career. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was her first single to climb to number one (and the second single that she released).
6. What was the #5 hit of the year 1970? "So I just did me some talkin' to the sun, And I said I didn't like the way he got things done, Sleepin' on the job. Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'. But there's one thing I know, The blues they send to meet me won't defeat me. It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me."

Answer: Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

B.J Thomas sang "Raindrops", which was written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach for the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". It won the Oscar that year for Best Original Song.
7. What was the #4 hit for the year 1970? "Peace, love and understanding, tell me, Is there no place for them today? They say we must fight, to keep our freedom, But Lord knows there's got to be a better way. Ahhh war... (huh!) Good God y'all. What is it good for? You tell 'em. (Nothin'!) Say it, say it, say it, say it."

Answer: War

Edwin Star, sometimes referred to as 'Agent Double - O Soul', had a huge hit with this song that was written by Barret Strong, Norman Whitfield and Edwin Star. It became almost an anthem for young people in America, who were sick of dying in the war in Viet Nam.
8. What was the #3 hit for the year 1970? "American woman, stay away from me. American woman, mama let me be. Don't come hangin' around my door, I don't wanna see your face no more. I got more important things to do, Than spend my time growin' old with you."

Answer: American Woman

"American Woman" started life in a jam session, so writing credit is given to all the band members of Canadian (yeah!) group, The Guess Who. The song expressed the bands feelings about returning home after being on tour in the States, where they encountered all the problems being experienced in the big American cities, and all the unrest created by the draft and the war in Viet Nam.

It was a number one hit in America for three weeks, and was even performed, by The Guess Who, at the White House.
9. What was the #2 hit for the year 1970? "Why do birds suddenly appear, Every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be, Close to you. Why do stars fall down from the sky, Every time you walk by? Just like me, they long to be, Close to you."

Answer: Close to You

The Carpenters were a duo that consisted of brother and sister, Karen and Richard Carpenter. They were 'discovered' by Herb Alpert, and pumped out 12 hits that made it into the top ten before Karen's untimely death, due to complications arising from Anorexia Nervosa, in 1983. "Close To You" was their first number one hit, and was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
10. What was the #1 hit for the year 1970? "When you're weary, feeling small, When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all. I'm on your side, when times get rough, And friends just can't be found, Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down."

Answer: Bridge Over Troubled Water

Written by Paul Simon, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" spent a deserved 10 weeks at the coveted number one spot. Unfortunately there were so many differences between Simon and Garfunkel at the time, that they split up shortly afterwards.
