Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band achieved UK top 20 hits in the 60s, 70s and 80s and were led by brothers Ray and Dave Davies?

Answer: The Kinks

The Kinks never received the plaudits of bands such as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones yet their contribution to music and the influence they had was probably just as important.
Artists as diverse as The Ramones, Van Halen and Oasis have all mentioned the influence the Davies brothers had on them while Pete Townshend of The Who and Brain May from Queen have also paid tribute to the brother's talents.
The Kinks first achieved UK chart success in 1964 with "You Really Got Me", the first of 19 top 20 hits, culminating with "Come Dancing" in 1982 before splitting up in 1996 due to rising creative tensions between the brothers.
Vocalist and main songwriter Ray along with guitarist Dave announced that they had reformed the band in 2018, but sibling rivalry seems to rear its head whenever they are together meaning that new material from the band continues to take a back seat.
2. Not two but three brothers in this band, along with a cousin. Which band, formed in 1999 consists entirely of Followills?

Answer: Kings of Leon

Brothers, Caleb (vocals), Jared (bass) and Nathan (drums) Followill are joined by cousin and guitarist Matthew to make up this talented family band.
Although they are American, it was UK audiences that first recognised the talent possessed by the boys, with their debut album, "Youth & Young Manhood" in 2003, hitting number three on UK album charts as well as giving them a top 30 hit on UK singles charts with Molly's Chambers" (2003), which was their debut single.
Since then, Kings Of Leon have had six consecutive number ones on UK album chart between 2007 and 2021 and their most successful singles, "Sex On Fire" (2008), "Use Somebody" (2008) and "Radioactive" (2010) were all bigger hits in UK than in their native USA.
3. Angus and Malcolm Young are well known as the driving force of AC/DC, but who was their older brother who achieved chart success as a musician and as producer of eight of AC/DC's studio albums?

Answer: George Young

The Young brothers were born in Scotland but definitely made in Australia where the determination and drive coupled with some of the best no nonsense rock n roll ever made AC/DC global superstars. Malcolm retired in 2014 due to dementia and passed away in 2017, but the Young pairing lives on as he was replaced by nephew Stevie.
Elder brother to Malcolm and Angus was George who was a founding member of The Easybeats and had nine Australian top 20 hits with the band, including the global hit "Friday On My Mind" (1966). He also formed new wave band, Flash and the Pan in 1976 who had top five hits in Australia with "Hey, St. Peter" (1976) and "Down Among The Dead Men" (1978) as well as a UK top ten hit with "Waiting For A Train" (1982).
A talented songwriter, George co-wrote most of the material for both bands with his longtime band mate Harry Vanda, as well as writing hits for Stevie Wright and John Paul Young (no relation).
It was with Vanda that George also co-produced artists The Angels, Rose Tattoo and AC/DC, for whom they worked on their first six studio albums between 1975 and 1978, before returning to production duties on "Blow Up Your Video" (1988) and "Stiff Upper Lip" (2000).
George died in 2017, just three weeks before his brother Malcolm.
4. Formed in 1998, the year after the lead vocalist had starred as long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine in a movie, which band features the talents of the Leto brothers?

Answer: Thirty Seconds To Mars

The Leto brothers in question are drummer, Shannon and vocalist/guitarist as well as acclaimed actor, Jared.
The band released their debut self titled album in 2002 and each album since up to "America" (2018) has done better than its predecessor in both the UK album charts and the Billboard 200 in USA.
In the singles charts, success hasn't been as forthcoming, although both "The Kill" (2006) and "Kings And Queens" (2008) were top 30 hits in UK.
Jared has starred in many films since his breakthrough role in "Prefontaine" (1997) and has won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013) as well as a SAG Award for his portrayal of possible serial killer, Albert Sparma in "The Little Things" (2021).
5. Five UK top 20 albums and two UK top ten singles were had by this Scottish band featuring the talents of the Reid brothers, Jim and William. What was the religious sounding name of their band?

Answer: The Jesus And Mary Chain

The Jesus And Mary Chain were formed by the Reid brothers in 1983 with Jim on vocals and William on guitar. They were joined by Douglas Hart on bass and briefly, Murray Dalglish on drums before he was replaced by Bobby Gillespie who would later go o to form Primal Scream.
The band's first album, "Psychocandy" (1985) sold well but was dwarfed by the success of its follow up, "Darklands" (1987) which reached number five in UK.
Sessions on the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1 and an appearance on TV show, "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1985 attracted more fans and by 1986, the band found themselves at number 13 in UK singles charts with "Some Candy Talking". This was bettered the following year when "April Skies" (1987) became their first top ten hit, peaking at number eight and following a string of top 40 hits, they achieved their second UK top ten hit in 1992 with "Reverence".
6. Although Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington are often mentioned as vocalists for Stone Temple Pilots, the engine room of the band is which pair of guitar playing brothers?

Answer: DeLeo Brothers

Dean DeLeo on guitar and brother Robert on bass write the majority of the music for Stone Temple Pilots and have worked well with both Weiland and Bennington acting as lyricists.
Of the six albums STP released with either Weiland or Bennington on vocals, all of them were top ten hits on the Billboard 200 in USA.
Dean DeLeo attracts much praise from his peers for his harmonically interesting and challenging fretwork while Robert has also served as bass player for the supergroup, Hollywood Vampires, formed by Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Johnny Depp.
7. Which Canadian band featuring brothers Win and William Butler won the Polaris Music Prize in 2011 as well as a Juno, a Grammy and a BRIT award?

Answer: Arcade Fire

2011 was certainly the year for Arcade Fire as their album "The Suburbs" (2010) won the Polaris Prize, as well as album of the year at the Juno's and the Grammy's and international album of the year at the BRIT's.
The band's first two albums, "Funeral" (2004) and "Neon Bible" (2007) were exceptional albums, which certainly had me hooked, but "The Suburbs" took their sound to a whole new level and was a top ten hit in album charts around the world, including being a number one in Norway, Portugal, UK and their native Canada as well as in USA on the Billboard 200.
Win Butler formed the band in 2001 with Régine Chassagne, who would become his wife in 2003, the same year that younger brother William joined the band.
8. The Stooges may have been viewed as a backing band for Iggy Pop, but they were talented musicians in their own right. Which pair of brothers were the band's guitarist and drummer?

Answer: Ron and Scott Asheton

All choices are actually brothers in bands with the Hanson brothers being part of Hanson, the Kirkwoods from Meat Puppets and the Longmuir brothers being two-fifths of the Bay City Rollers.
That leaves the Asheton boys, the wildly talented Ron on guitar and Scott on drums, who between them set the bar for punk musicians who would "burst" onto the scene a decade after The Stooges self titled debut album in 1969.
Ron passed away in 2009 and Scott in 2014, which meant that as original bass player, Dave Alexander died in 1975, Iggy Pop became the only surviving member of the original Stooges line-up. Who would have predicted that given Pop's wild past?
9. The world would be a much poorer place without the music of New Zealand's Finn brothers. Which band were Tim and Neil members of between 1977 and 1984?

Answer: Split Enz

Split Enz were formed in 1972 by Tim Finn and although their first two albums charted in New Zealand, it wasn't until the addition of Neil for the "Dizrythmia" album in 1977 that they saw major success.
The brothers would go on to have three albums that reached number one in the New Zealand and Australian album charts, as well as chart in Canada, UK and on the Billboard 200 in USA between 1980 and 1982.
These albums would also yield success in singles charts with tracks such as "I Got You" (1980), "One Step Ahead" (1981) and "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" (1982).
In 1984, Split Enz disbanded, with Neil forming the very successful Crowded House, as well as becoming a member of Fleetwood Mac. Tim made his mark as a solo artist as well as making music for movies such as "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (2005) and composing for theatre productions
10. Mark Knopfler is well known as the guitarist and frontman for Dire Straits, but who was his brother who was a part of the band for their first two albums, "Dire Straits" (1978) and "Communiqué" (1979)?

Answer: David

In 1977, bothers David and Mark formed Dire Straits along with their friend John Illsley. "Dire Straits" (1978) was an instant hit and spawned a successful single in "Sultans Of Swing" (1978). Their second album, "Communiqué" (1979) was an even bigger hit but sibling tensions came to head during the recording of their third album and David left the band in 1980.
That third album was "Making Movies" (1980) which gave us the classic "Romeo And Juliet" (1981) but David wasn't around for this or the success that followed including the huge "Brothers In Arms" (1985) and "Alchemy" (1984) albums.
Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, with Mark going on to have a solo career as well as producing albums for a diverse range of artists.
David, on leaving the band also began a solo career and although perhaps not as successful as Mark, he is well respected within the industry and has worked with a variety of musicians including Eddi Reader, Pino Palladino and Chris Rea.
